  • IT IS FUNNY THAT 10 YEARS LATER SCORSESE GOT ROBED AGAING AND "LOSE" AGAINST ANOTHER ACTOR WHO DIRECT ALSO LIKE REDFORT HIS FIRST FILM : KEVIN KOSTNER FOR "DANCES WITH WOLVES"..THE SAME THING...IF THE ACADEMY DIDNT LIKE THAT A GANGSTER PICTURE TO WIN THE "BEST FILM" CATEGORY THEY SHOULD GIVE IT AT LEAST THE DIRECTION TO SCORSESE MUCH BETTER THAN KOSTNER!!!!...THE ACADEMY SEEMS TO CONFUSE BOTH CATEGORIES!....SO SCORSESE SHOULD HAVE 3 OSCARS BY NOW! ( AT LEAST).

  • RAGING BULL IS ALSO A GREAT DRAMATIC PIECE LiKE RDINARY PEOPLE...ITS EVEN BETTER IN THE WAY THAT SCORSESE SHOWS THAT LEVEL OF REALISTIC DRAMA AND IINER CONLIFCTS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER(LAMOTTA), BUT WHAT IS EVEN WORSE IS THAT THE ACADEMY DIDNT CARE THE LEVEL OF TECHNIQUES THAT SCORSESE USE IN RAGING BULL....SOMETHHING THAT ROBERT REDFORD ISENT ABLE TO DO!...THAT IS THE AWARD OF DIRECTING AND WHY THE ADEMY F....SCORSESE!

  • redford doesn t deserve an oscar for directing this movie. directing raging bull was much harder ,scorsese really got fucked for this oscar

  • David Lynch @ 0:01 FTW

  • Watch this movie and it this award will speak for itself.

  • @NicaZan this film is now forgotten and raging bull is a classic for the ages, once the academy sucks!

  • what a buch of crap, that oscar had scorseses name on it and still does!!!!!

  • "Ordinary People" is a masterpiece. Its quietly powerful scenes, beautiful music score, great performances, depth of characters...... one of the greatest movies of all time.

  • @lineba20 yes nobody is saying orinary people is bad...but the award of directing is wrong!!!!!....RAGING BULL IS ONE OF THE BEST DIRECTED FILM EVER. AND ALSO HAVE GREAT POWERFULL PERFOMRNACES, DRAMA, SCORE...IN ALL ASPECTS IT IS BETTER...BUT THE OSCARS ARE POLITIC CORRECT AND DIDNT HAVE THE BALLS TO AWARD A VIOLENT, HARD FILM LIKE RAGING BULL! THAT IS WHY REDFORT WON!

  • @ceratoidegus We all know the Oscars are rigged. Yes, Scorcese may have deserved best director. They get it wrong often and pick their favorites.

So it's a good thing that at least neither "Raging Bull" or "Ordinary People" got left out.

I just wish every year had at least two films of that caliber.

  • It's not only a personal oppinion. This is for sure one of the most stupid best director awards of all times.

  • If you haven't yet seen Ordinary People you probably shouldn't criticize.

  • For many years, before I ever saw Ordinary People, I blindly thought Scorsese should've won. But after seeing both films, they both deserved it. I love both films. Like jimidee33 commented, Redford let the performances speak for themselves. But this was Scorsese's and De Niro's best career work as well, IMO. So it's really a toss up, and it sucks they were both at the same time.

Also, Donald Sutherland got screwed out of a nomination. He's essential to Ordinary People. My fave role of his.

  • Redford deserved the Oscar. He let the performances of the actors speak for themselves in this very moving film. A home run! I love the expresion on wife Lola's face, when his win is announced.

  • scorsese, lynch, and polanski all nominated in one year...and ROBERT REDFORD wins? wtf

  • As much as I love Ordinary People, Scorsese got fucked in the ass here. At least he finally got one though.

  • I said the same thing for years but I recently watched Bull and People and not only is Ordinary People the superior piece of art, it's better directed. Scorcese tries too hard to bring out emotion. Redford let the story tell itself and let the people be people. It was so beautiful, and really spoke to the soul. Bull speaks to the mind and makes you think your soul should be affected. Not the same thing. The Academy has gotten it wrong many times, but not in 1980.

  • @ShallowPete what do you think is more difficult? bringing out the emotion out of the film or letting the story tell itself. Robert Redford only brought out the great performances from Tyler Moore, Judd Hirch, and Timothy Hutton. However, Martin Scorsese was able to pull out tiny little details and emotions with artistic shots and great performances from Robert Deniro and Joe Peci. The Ordinary People only deserved an oscar in acting category not in this one.

  • @HovaNirvana i'm one of the few people who thought ordinary people deserved it. it was filled with so many little humanistic nuances rarely captured on film.

  • @hithr3000 LOOK EVERYTIME I REMAIND FOR SOME REASON THE INJUSTICE THAT THE ACADEMY MADE AGAINT SCORSESE IN THIS.....IM NOT SAYING ORDINARY PEOPLE IS BAD, IF IT WON THE OSCAR IS BECAUSE IS REALLY GOOD, BUT THE MOST CORRECT THING IN SOME CASE IS GIVE BEST DIRECTOR TO SCORSESE AND BES PICTURE TO ORDINARY PEOPLE IF THE ACADEMY LACK OF THE BALLS TO AWARD A HONEST POWERFULL FILM LIKE RAGING BULL....IS FUNNY THAT RIGHT NOW RAGING BULL IS NUMBER 4!!! AT AFI IN THE "100 BEST AMERICAN MOVIES".

  • martin scorsese is so disappontent at 0:02. for reason!

  • pachelbel!
