I remeber listening to this music a lot when I was in my early 20-ies. While it feels a bit dated to me now I always thought it was an interesting ans mesmerising piece. It sort plays upon the repetitiveness of all the parts. A typical average length concert of the whole piece takes two hours. It takes ages before this part with the main theme kicks in and when it does, the contrast and shock to the hypnotizing mononous earlier parts can't be bigger. It's a relief to reach that point.
My opinion, perhaps it's an idea to have canto ostinato on the background while busy with something like driving to work or smoking an cuban cigar, it works very relaxing! i've noticed myself!
@mrmolinodelahoz wrong, wrong, wrong. Your state of mind influences changes the way you experience the music, thus changing your opinion on it. Everyone notices this, when you are in mellow mood you like mellow music, while when youre in an energetic state you generally (not allways ofc) hate it.
It is as if an invitation to the unique cosmic experience and is full of pain, full of pleasure, that is to say is so dangareous for a mind illuminated by intoxication... As Walter Benjamin noted that: Allegorical dismemberment. The music to which one listens under the influence of hashish appears, in Baudelaire, as the entire poem entering your brain , like a dictionary that has come alive.
This performance was at the former Iron Factory "DRU" at Ulft (Gelderland, East part of Netherlands) in 2003. They performed at the empty hall on a day the old factory was open for visitors. I was there and it was absolutely amazing. You cannot imagine a better - slightly estranging - location for a piece like Canto Ostinato. Besides, I discovered myself and family walking by somewhere in the background!
I really enjoy this piano piece. I heard Sandra and Jeroen playing this piece the first time at the Concertgebou in Amsterdam and I was immediately struck by the beauty and mistique of this composition.
Thanks!

This is like chewing gum but for the ears.
Little changes from beginning to end, and keeps losing it´s flavor, till you get rid of it.

What does driving to work or smoking a cuban cigar have to do with art or music?
Noise is still noise even when it sounds like driving through traffic.
No music is better than bad music.
Speak only when you can improve upon the silence.
