You know they touched so many lives doing this. They don't make quality like this anymore. These guys were comedic geniuses! And there actually was a clip where Harpo beats a piano to death, literally! He then proceeds to pull the guts out of the piano and play them like a harp! Totally look it up, funniest stunt ever,
Whether Chico plays for older gals, eyeing them (the womanizing scamp), or for kids, it's all good. And even if it's a bit scripted for the kids to laugh, you know they are enthralled. Then it goes over the top w/ Harpo- who shifts gears entirely on his real passion. I've always loved every bit of their films but the harp moments were the best. Old school practice, practice,...
They have clever and subtle humor, self-deprecating humor, impeccable timing, astonishing wit, extraordinary musical talent, and brilliant comedic writing. Watching their movies and these short clips on Youtube is always enjoyable and brings back great memories.
"If you've ever seen a Marx brothers picture, you know the difference between him and me. When he's chasing a girl across the screen it's Him. When he sits down to play the harp, it's Me. Whenever I touched the strings of a harp, I stopped being an actor." --Harpo Speaks
Chico learned piano with his uncle and had no formal (school) training. Just amazing talent. Harpo also had no formal training in the Harp. Which is amazing since just to learn the basics takes you 7 years. I know people that can't believe he developed his technique by himself. True masters from a time when movie artists were amazing musicians. Today even music performers (let's call them that), can't play anything.
The taller girl standing directly behind Chico looks a lot like a young Annette Ruderman (I don't remember her maiden name). Ruderman studied violin with Peter Meremblum but gave up her career when she married flutist Marty Ruderman and raised a family. She would have been about 13 at the time.
It was typical for many of the kids in the Meremblum and other orchestras to appear as extras in movies, as many were used to performing in front of audiences.
When I first saw a Marx brothers movie (I can't quite remember which one) I truly could not believe they actually played- they were too great! But now, I can't be mistaken- the Marx Brothers were extrememly talented!!
Imagine if they had the recording equipment we have now to record this. I would love to hear the harp more clearly. The sound was overwhelming the mic...
I remember the Marx Brothers Movie on the Saturday afternoon tv. My grandmother would always cry after Harpo's solo on his harp.......Its so nice to see and hear it again........
In this scene, Chico on the piano makes me feel happy, makes me want to smile. And as for Harpo on his harp. . .so beautiful and angelic, kinda makes your heart melt a bit. . .(I know its kinda cheesy to say, but its true) I wouldnt be suprised if we were in the afterlife, still playing with tha boyish grin on his face X-P
My favorite parts of the Marx Brothers films are probably the music scenes, just because of how outstanding they were. You don't see many actors this talented at so many things anymore and that's a shame.
Ott: Croucho wrote in his book that one of a very few comedians that made him laugh was Charlie Chaplin that he first saw doing his act on the stage and in a front of a live audience. Later, they become friends.
Just having the opportunity to comment on a piece that's made me laugh and be in awe for over 40 years, is a great honour. Genius just isn't enough to describe these guys! Angels with angels!
One of the most beautiful scenes in cinematic history. I went from laughing to crying in about 30 seconds. God, these guys were amazing. They don't make 'em like they used to. Rest in peace, boys...
Years after Harpo's death, harps continue to cry in sadness because there will never be an equal to him.

I wish all movies were still like this, with the exception of a few, I wonder what these guys would have done with some electric guitars \m/

Also, watch that woman at 3:10 go from happy face to lip bite... It makes me lol every time. XD

With all those kids and their happy faces, I bet those two never had a better time onstage. <3
And Harpo must be a piano's worst nightmare... I'm surprised this one didn't begin to dissolve under his hands. XD
Easily one of my favorite clips of them. :3
