When I plug in the usb, do I need a sound card to plug it into as well?
Or is this straight USB with no stereo headphone jack needed to produce the sound?
Will I see it in my Intel Mac in the system preferences sound options labeled as LaCie?

No sound card is required. You just plug it in via USB and away you go. It works on Mac and Windows. It will appear in your audio preferences labelled.
