  • theres a ska version of this. anyone know?

  • @gretschcatalinamaple yes and im trying to find it!

  • @TheOhioFishing Found it! Big D and the kids table. cant believe that slipped my mind.

  • Jonathan Richman loves New England and I love Jonathan Richman! :D

  • What happens when white people get down?

  • This song was also heard in the NESN 2005 movie documenatry- "Wait till this year" It was a documentary about a young married couple who are lawyers and Red Sox fans who get season tickets and film the events of the 2004 season through teir eyes. Not a bad movie not a good one either. This song can also be heard a Boston sports bar in New York called Professor Thoms. The owner Chris Wertz plays this in between innings during Red Sox games.

  • Jonathan Richman never got called an a--hole!

What a GENIUS! I want to take him home and wind him up!

He can go all night- he's got his little red light-

    He's a little airplane!

  • He can't sing but I like him and I like this song

  • Live Jonathan from '78....this is one of my favorite modern lovers setups....thanks thanks thanks!

  • funny. perfect

  • God, he looks so young here. He's only gotten better over the years

  • Is Christopher Walken playing the drums?

  • Jonathan made it to Top of the Pops? Awesome! Jonathan is so awesome.

  • He must have looked like a Martian to the jaded UK punk crowd back in '78. He's still one of my favs.

  • @motownmaniax Well Sir Mr.Richman did warn you that "here come the Martian Martians" as well as "The Abominable Snowman in the Supermarket" -Daniel: By the way i was one of those jaded UK Punks!!!

  • @johnnylongback Glad you got his humor...lol. Hope the rest did.

  • where can you find this on a studio album did they ever record this in studio?

  • @tragicallyhiprule

The album is called "Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers". you can still find it in stores, amazon, etc...

  • They used to say there's nothing like a Dead show... Well, there is nothing like seeing Jonathan Richman - it'll change your whole idea of performing,,,

  • he's so cute!

  • peter brady-esque

  • 5 star song, & a great dance! Love 'em!

  • "I love New Egnland" that's why I live in San Francisco...

  • Yeah, I've never seen them play it live when they HAVEN'T said something about this guy, and how he hasn't sued them for covering it yet. They never make it seem like THEY wrote it.

  • big d and the kids table cover is great check it out!

  • i second that :)

  • I love this band! I'm listening to newer stuff though. And it's funny, I never knew they wrote this New England song originally. Big D And The Kids Table make it seem like THEY wrote it. They perform it at every show and it's a favorite.

But it's a GREAT song. :) (I'm from New England)

  • if you actually had the Big D Cd that the song is on (Gypsy Hill EP) It starts off with them saying "This is a song by Jonathan Richman" They don't make it seem like it's their song, most bands don't mention who they are covering when they sing it live..

  • yh, but they always say, i ho[pe they play it when i see em soon :)

  • gotta love it!

  • The purest ethos of punk: performing this in 1978! Jonathan Richman is the definition of fearless.

  • totally agree. when my dad described punk to me for the first time he was like, these guys. haha.

  • They're very soft and goofy, though. I mean, you can't blame them too much, after all, all the "hahhhdcoah" bands of today start here, but Roadrunner is basically a VU song with an uneventful trip around Metrowest replacing a murder at a drug orgy.

  • pure rebels

  • wonderful!!

  • he looks pretty nervous at the start. oh, jonathan! i wonder what the audience in old england thought of him.

  • I don't think i have ever seen him without a guitar...

  • I remember hearing this for the first time way back when the earth was still green and it's still just as priceless. Man the Modern Lovers were a great band.

  • soulful performance here by Janathan ... priceless footage.

  • he's just the best

  • Crazylikeafool, if you don't like this guy, just go back to playing your crappy arrowsmith albums

  • haha I love that you spelled aerosmith wrong.

Jonathan is an hero of men.

  • Jonathan rules, every decade gets better

  • I love that he still dances like this at his concerts

  • i hart this. but wats up with the high voice?

  • i live in New England XD

  • I think the Big D version sounds a lot fuller, and happier.

Although I feel a certain amount of love for this version, because they are Jonathan Richman's words and music.

    I think they're both good.

  • Good call hollyhock100 ! They should play this instead of fucking neil diamond!

  • THIS is what should be playing at Fenway every game- not "Sweet Caroline". Ugh.

  • I second that! Really!

  • @hollyhock100 They often play 'Roadrunner' at Fenway Park!

  • POSTED A VIDEO OF MINE FOR A SONG CALLED "JONATHAN RICHMAN" as a response. Hope you all enjoy it. He's been a huge influence in so many ways.

  • one of my favourite jonathan songs..............

  • best song ever

  • Go listen to that shite then, idiot. They wouldn't have the material without Mr. Richman, as I doubt that they could ever write a song as good as this in a million years. So, I think you should be praising the man instead of slagging him off.

  • His statement was obviously uncalled for but Big D and The Kids Table can write songs so dont assume they cant if youve never listened to them.

  • We're talking about Jonathan Richman here.

Who's big d? Never heard of.

  • ska?

    you reek of horseshit

  • I wasn't talking about Jonathan Richman being ska. A ska band covered his song. They were called Big D. They asked who Big D was and I said they were a ska band. Jesus.

  • oops, sorry homes

  • Big D and The Kids Table is a ska-punk band. Look it up.

  • The big d version has 'more feeling'? Are you winding me up. Look at JR's dancing, he looks like a five year old opening his Christmas presents! Sorry, but the other version is gash if you ask me.

  • thats the video

    i'm talking about the music.

  • Sure I've heard It, It's not bad. Whatever

  • ok.

i can live with that. im personally not a great fan of jonathan richman.

but i respect the shit outta him.

and your not a fan of big d & the kids table. but as long as you say that its not horrible, im ok.

  • Incorrect, No sloppy thrash cover will ever be better than this.

  • What a funny hair-do! Love this song.
