The Author is "Patrick O'Brian" and it is a great series. Make sure you read it from the beginning starting with the book "Master and Commander"

Oldmanklc is right. Read all the books as they are some of the greatest historical novels ever written. I think O'Brian would have been happy with Peter Weir's movie, particularly Crowe's version of Lucky Jack which seems to be very close to the Aubrey of the novels.
