Half tank. I don't let it go under 1/2, or try not to. It's good for the system (any impurities are far less concentrated, and prevents freeze-up on colder days).
I dont see where or how you proved anything. You pumped less than 6 gallons but you never showed how much gas you had to start with so how are we supposed to know that your tank was more empty than that?
Just because you may have fooled "your car" into thinking the tank is full you still only got the 5point whatever it was gallons of gas out of the pump. DUh?
I'm trying to understand and hoping I can use it with my older Chevy S-10, 1989 Blazer. Does anyone know if the 'venting' would work on a larger tank like mine which is about 20 gallons in size. Thanks to any responses. And, thank you georgef551 for posting the video.
@georgef551: I'm not saying you can't i'm just saying there is no perfect system to prevent theft. It's unfortunate. By the way thanks for posting this video, i did not know about one stop systems before i'll definitely have to look in to my owner's manual to see what I have.
Never heard of 1 stop, 3 stop, or anything stop for that matter. Brand new Honda Pilot, jam the nozzle in and let it pump. Full tank every time. Same with the 2010 Benz
This video shows that you have no idea how evaporative emissions controls work on either your car or the gas pump. Your car pulls fuel vapors from the tank through the carbon canister, the PCV valve, and then burns them along with the intake charge. You can't rupture the tank by over filling. The fuel pump pulls vapors displaced by the gas you pump into the tank and pumps them underground into the gas station's fuel tank. Thats why the rubber boot seals it off.
Apperenlty, the pulling of the vapors isn't good enough, because on my last car (Dodge Neon, which was a 3-stop system, per owner's manual), the agitated vapors escaped, and got more gas into the tank, versus letting it settle, and the pump recovering. Enough so, I get an extra 20 miles, which in my case, is a 1-way trip to work.
Thanks for pointing out the rupture thing, as I was on the fence there.
In some owner's manuals, some instructions tell you that when the pump stops 3 times, it's a full tank, versus 1, with this car.
Topping off can be a bit dangerous, as you'll likely fill the charcoal cannister, and not leave enough empty expansion space for the gas to expand. That can cause the tank to rupture.
He put fuel all over his paint job AND has some bullshit theory on 'letting the vapours escape' you leave that open and all the fuel will evaporate eventually!
Unfortunately, those that get over 100MPG are typically hybrids, with are super expensive to replace it's batteries, and are death traps if you ever get into a serious accident with one.
(EMT workers fear of a short, causing electrocution.)
@georgef551 im talking about the water, engines, propane, natural gas, the electric hybrids dont usually get over 100 mpg? the new fusion hybrid is supposed to tho
Oh, yeah, those. Those are very pricey. Only well-to-do's can afford them, or drug dealers. :)
The Propane and Natural Gas ones get a bad rep. They don't "Hindenburg" if something catasthrophic happens. Designers have designed things to allow safe escape of burning/exploding fuel.
It's like pouring a glass of Diet Coke (famous for being overly carbonated). When you pour a glass, you obviously stop when it's full. However, you'll notice there's a head of foam on top, similar to vapors in the tank (not the natural ocurrence, heat/motion generated). With the Coke, you let it sit, so the foam dissipates, then pour again, until you have a true full glass to enjoy. Same principle here.
I always use my debit card at gas stations so I don't have to go back inside for change..and I don't have to guess how much to put in, I just let it run until it stops.
Though I learned something new with venting it and stopping at around $15 or so before continuing to fill up, I always just went ahead and filled it up right away until it stops.
That would be great if you paid a set fee per tank of gas, but since you're buying it by the gallon what exactly are you proving?

To get that extra distance, you you may be able to put off a pit stop, or maybe go extra distance between stops on longer trips.

Then again, South America pays about $.50/gal, or $.17 liter.

It never hurts, but as always be sure to read the manual on filling up. The venting will help extend time between fillup points.

Chrystlers seem to have a 3-stop system (Neon's manual did state that).
When it stops, and you vent, or let it settle, if it takes about $.50, that's it, full.
A buck or two, likely a 3-stopper.

Definitely true, no perfect anti-theft system. Anything to annoy the thief, can help.
If you see nothing about number of pump stops in your manual, it's a single-stop, likely.

The Dodge Neon, and the older Ford Focus, had instructions that 3 stops on the gas pump was a full tank.
My 1st car actually was 3/4 on the 1st stop, completely full on the 3rd.
I think the newer cars have a better system where 1 stop is a full tank.

Maybe it's people that put Acetone in their tank, to "increase milage".
(I'm no car expert, but I had my doubts on the tank exploding. Have topped off in 100+ degree days, nothing happened.)

So you clear the air out for more space, so you won't have to buy more gas for an extra few hours, good technique but frustrating.

theRDRman 2 weeks ago
@theRDRman
No, no, not quite:
On a 1-stop system, when it stops, that's it. (Maybe a tad more, just to make even change.)
On a systems where 3 stops is a full tank, you go until it stops 3 times, but let the agitated vapors go each time.
