  • Damn i dont want this guy to be my next ex's father

  • would these work on someones rib cage

  • Well, depends on who you going to hit with~! ;P

If you hit Hulk Hogan~ he will laugh at you. but if you hit normal guy... Yeah, you might have to take them to the hospital. and I hope you don't...!!!

  • ok, thanks my grandmaster told me to get a box full of white round beans and strike into the box 100 times a day increasing +10 per week till 500 times a day each hand. any other ideas?

  • @tallica8888 Of course, you could use those beans or sands or saw dust too. but one thing to remember, Do not over do to damage your hand. You only have one body. So, follow your grand master's advice and instruction. He will not make you to do those breaking techniques unless you are ready. I wouldn't make my small students to break the bricks yet....... ;P

Most of all, concentration... when you are breaking the board.

    Good luck.

  • so i just found out i have to do a spear hand/finger tip break for my hapkido bodan test. any advice for training/preparing my hand/fingers for this break?

  • @tallica8888 That spear hand strike, you have to be careful too. If your Master or Instructor teach you before you try, it will be the best. but if they don't teach you and telling you " JUDT DO IT"... then, Oh Well~ Good luck. It is very hard for me to tell you how to do it here. I could teach any of these techniques here what you see, if you are in my class. Most of my students could do those breaking techniques now... ! Good luck on your Dan test.

  • im sure if that "master" was in a front stance he wouldnt have fallen down.

  • @Raitsogen Yes, of course, he wouldn't fall but he will have to take all the shock that I give... it means more shock penetration. You are not only learning how to penetrating the shock to break the boards but you have to learn how to observe the shock too... Thank you.

  • @joekimtkd considering the proper technique for a knife hand guarding block you strike yourself in the solar plexus, and to be really good you gotta train every day. after continuous striking to yourself like that you can take quite a hit. I know I can.

im not really bashing you, just the guy taking the hit.

i think it would cause more internal damage if it wasn't a push. to me it looked like more of a push.

from my experience, you can judge a good martial artist by their side kick, and -

  • @joekimtkd and resilience to pain. oh, and by the way i like your techniques with the eggs. thats pretty cool. I don't think i would be able to break anything with my spearhand just yet. maybe not thumb either. and kudos for putting the bloopers at the end. shows your ego isnt the size of texas :)

  • i was able to see a similar technique to the stick break. kwanjangnim kwon from virginia had 2 sets of 5 sheets of toilet paper, suspended by razorblades, holding a pencil at the bottom. he was able to use a simple business card to break the pencil without ripping the paper.

  • anyunghashimneeka. i wanted to say great job. the "bloopers" at the end are great to demonstrate how even the masters make human errors. these techniques are awesome!

im not sure how these kind of things are even possible but i hope in time with extensive training i may be able to have technique like the great masters before me!

    E Dan- Daniel McNeill Virginia

    take care, taekwon!

  • @tallica8888 You know anyhing is possible. I hope you become the master soon. Don't give up...! Keep on kicking..!

  • Hey Master Kim, video looks awesome!

  • i like how they show the failed attempts at the end so all of you that dont believe that people can do that will shut up with the comment saying there a fake

  • Kwongjangnim!!!

Hi sir, it's James Lim. How are you? AMAZING video, by the way! Really nice techniques! =)

  • Hi James. I was on the way for the class yesterday from Mount Forest and I saw you walking~ ;) I will teach you all those techniques... Keep up the good work.

  • Yes sir! Thank you =)

  • I'm awefully sorry to hear that but those bullies are not easy to get rid of them. and can't attend any martial arts school then, my advice is talk to teacher first and if it doesn't work, talk to principle direct. Principle has to solve your problem or else he looses his job. and talk to your parents too. Good luck. I hope you don't get those trouble no more...!

  • My son (24 years old) told me wait till he finishes his narrate, then strike... And this is only demonstration of breaking techniques. So if I move quick, no one is able to see what I'm doing... lol.

  • amazzzzzing

!!! master joe as ive said u looks like jakie chan as i meet him in h.k. but i know its you master joe, nice to meet you, and thanks for the ticket...keep going...

  • No~ Jackie Chan is look alike me~~~ ;)

Have a good time in Durham. Thank you.

  • impressive!!!! u look like jakie chan as i say thanks for the ticket anyway hehehe keep going!!amazing!

  • Master Kim

I myself have been trying to do some breaks while holding an egg. However so far I have had no luck..I either break the board and the egg..or neither..can you tell me your process for this technique?

  • You are too strong~ That is why... or You didn't want to save the Egg~ ;)

The point to breaking the board with an egg is... try to save the egg while you are striking the board. So... you have to tighten your fist and fingers... and try to break the board. and reduce the punching power as well. and use the "Chi", if you know it...! Good luck.

  • haha thank you master kim. I will try harder to save the egg next time I practice.

  • master kim, great sir.being a breaker myself,i know what it takes to accomplish clean breaks.i really liked the break when your student held the board to his chest.what depth are you focusing on?

  • Deepest possible~ but in order to break those board against human body... you have to use snap punch to break that board and also have to use power punch to penetrate the shock into deep inside.

To do so, you could use shouder to increase power. Thank you for your kind word. Keep on kicking~~!

  • The breaking with the eggs was awesome!

  • Thank you. Well~ it wasn't easy techniques but now my students could do that too~~~ ;)

and they are so happy to do so~~

  • Yes, go to Mount Forest branch shcool. You know Dave is great instructor... He is becoming Master shortly... I hope you guys are going to Michigan tournament and bring the big trophy home.......!!!

  • we wish we could but we have no trainer here but we might come to mount forest

  • How are you guys? Are you guys are going to International tournament in Michigan on May 16? I hope you guys do... ;) We might rent a bus to go all together... Keep on kicking...!

  • hey master joe kim, nice video. Hey it is brock and frankie from Dundalk.

  • can someone tell me if palm strike can damage wrist?

  • Yes and No~! it is matter of how you strike and how hard you strike. That is why you supposed to take training from the Masters... I could training anyone in site but over the on line... it is extremely hard to explain and I can't see what you are doing. So... Can't help you on that. Good luck.

  • very, very nice. I wasn't impressed, until I saw the "holding an egg" brake

  • Hey, cool.

I'll check it out, thanks. Maybe I should take his Ken Do class too. =D

  • I think he moved, the number you gave me was wrong so I googled the World TKD Academy, Nanaimo BC and I came up with this on a website

    (250) 760-0119

    #307-4300 Wellington Road Nanaimo, BC

  • Oh, he also trains Kum Do too. Which is even cooler because I wanted to mast the sword

  • Yea, will do.

Could you tell me his name? And if you know the name of the school he teaches at?

  • Grand Master Young-Min Kim

    World TKD Academy.

    2702 105th St.

    Nanaimo B.C.

    250-754-0119 (B)

He just started to teaching Korean Ken Do too. You should see his Ken Do skills...!!! I took Ken Do training too but I am no body to compare to him...!

    Good luck...!!!

  • I live in BC, currently resideing in Nanaimo. In 1 month I will be going to Port Alberni.

I currently do not have a master. I had to stop at yellow/green strip due to entering university and needing to take up a job for money. I've been self training through YouTube videos like yours and ChosonNinja (I really like his methods), also by looking up defense and attack patterns on google for lots of arts.

  • If I were to enter a school they would probably upgrade my belt pretty fast. Alas since I have only trained in a school to the green strip I can't call my skills any higher since I don't know what a master thinks about me.

  • As soon as I get back to Port Alberni I will be taking up martial arts again. Probably get to black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do then start Karate, and move on to Jujitsu. I plan on learning all the martial arts I can in my lifetime whilst working my dream profession and supporting my family.

  • Wow~ you must have a lot of dream. That is good for your life. Any how, in Nanaimo, I have my best friend teaching Tae Kwon Do right now. He is best Korean Ken Do Master ever I've seen. and also he is good in TKD Master as well. If you see him, you'll love in in a second. and also tell him about me, who knows he will give you a good discount. ; ) I really do miss him. I've promised him many times to visit him but~One of these days, I'll be there for sure. Good luck for your journey.

  • Man, I'm still developing my Chi, so I don't think any of the single figure breaks are possible for me yet. Though you make them look so cool, I almost want to go grab a good board and try to do a speed break.

So far I've only managed to do full punch and kick breaks.

I'm also only a yellow belt green stripe belt in tae-kwan-do.

If you could please msg me on some tips for Chi building and control?

  • Where are you in Canada? I'm in Durham Ontrario. Who is your Master? All those power and skills doesn't come in one day~ ;( As you practice more... you become more stronger and wiser...! I wish I could teach you all in one word but... One of my student who became the Master Instructor in May 2008, had a little hard time to conqure these techniques...

You will be more stronger than me in future. so don't quit...!!!

  • Hello Master Kim, I was at your store today and you were explaining about your style of hard "chi" that you use while breaking boards and bricks. I looked at your two video posts and i can truly say you are a true Master. Allan

  • Oh, boy~ Now you are making me shy~~~! ; )

    Thank you for nice words...

  • The ending was surprising. But it at least make master Joe Kim seem human ^_^

Did all the eggs used in the clips survived the board breaking attempts, or were there some "egg-cidents"? (bad joke I know)

  • ha ha ha~~~ "egg-cidents"~~~! That is good one. ;) Luckly, I never broke the eggs yet.

Any how, as you saw yourself, my last video for index finger strike and board didn't broke... ;( It's been hurting a really, really, really BAD~~~! I wouldn't suggest you to do it either. One thing to remember for all the martial artist... When you breaking the boards or bricks... you have to break them hard. then it doesn't hurt. but if it didn't break... it will hurt you real GOOD~~~!!!

  • impressive. Im from canada. and i train under Hap Ki Do and am a year and half from my black. i am training my fingers currently to break bords.any tips?

  • You are in Hap Ki Do training. That is good. In Peterborough Ontario, Grand Master Choi who has 8th degree black belt...is in great shape and great ability. for finger break?! Well~~~ it should be accompanied with "Chi". and got to have a bit of meat at the end of your finger too... ; ) I've taught one of my student for Thumb break. and he succeded. but Index finger break didn't succeed YET...!

Good luck and Happy New Year.

  • Thank you for all those nice words... now you made me so HIGH~~~~~ ;) Well~~~ Adam deserves better. He is so dedicated. I can't wait till he gets the Black belt on him. although he gets them on coming May, 2009.

    Happy New Year~!

  • not only is Master Kim amazing at these demonstrations he is also an amazing instructor my son has been taking his classes for 4 years and has learned unmeasurable things from him not only technigue but so much more.i feel very lucky to have him and his family teaching in our town and as my son grows he sees how lucky he is also. Thank-you to him and his family who show patients and kindness to so many of our children.

  • i would like to see this on time warp and get a closer look at how you do this. i study traditional karate and we dont break boards but i think it might be beneficial to condition myself to do so.

  • Of course it will help you a lot. A few peoples were asking why do you wasting time on breaking... ;) They will find out in time. Even if you know how to punch beautifully and fast... if your knuckle can't handle the pressure... you will have broken knuckle. I actually seen one of the Master who was so proud in his arts... had broken knuckle while he was fighting drunken bum. Now, How proud is he...??? Maybe that is our human nature...?! After lost cow then fixing the fense... ;(

  • im thinking not too proud. the bigger you are the harder you fall right. although we dont break boards we do have a punching board for conditioning and judging our distance and timing for out punches

  • its awesome. i learned Mantis kungfu for 7 years, and i could do most of the break Master Joe Kim does in this video too. only except the power punch that breaks two boards actually i never tried that. I will.

very nice videos. Check out my videos to see i break board with one finger too. its absolutely not a good idea to try at home ^^

  • Once you know how to break, it is easy as what you can do. Only thing in your video, after strike, your whole body and arm made a big arc which supposed to be strike completely straight. which means you are penetrating all your force straight into the board. Another word, much more power.

and use momentum (=Jerk)from your wrist and elbow and shoulder and waist and your weight. then your breaking power doubles or triples up. I wish I could teach you in person more but you are living far away. ;(

  • This is a great vid. Awesome skills, and a great ending lol.

  • Haha 4:30-4:35 Master Keith Heaton can't even speak because the PowerPunch went through anyway.

  • With your learning speed, attitude, spirit..., You will be better than Master Keith... ;) Keep up the good work. I'm counting on you, Cody.

  • Thank you Sir, that means a lot.

  • Do you use soley xternal force or do you add your internal energy???

  • I guess you are talking about the "Chi". I have developed "Hard Chi". Most of Masters using "Chi" that I call "Soft Chi". but with this "Hard Chi", I could concentrate all my power into certain part of my body and increasing more power. If you look at my other video that breaking bricks with back of my hand, you will understand better. Thank you.

  • sori if i put that message becuz my cousin type i dint even know so sori

  • That is quiet alright...!!! Nomally lack of knowledged peoples BARKS a lot... ; )

As thumb of rules, 1st Dan black belt looking for more trouble than 2nd Dan black belts...!

I've been in martial arts training all my life (50 years old) and went through a lot of different kind of peoples too. Any way, thank you for your honesty. Last Saturday, we just had Black belt test and one of my student became MASTER and he performed most of breaking tech you saw here too. Thank you again.

  • Master Kim, I really like your response above. I am amazed at how many people have so many negative things to say on the internet, but in person they would be much more polite. This was an excellent deonstration video. You show the unsuccessful breaks at the end, I respect that very much also. It shows the real way of things, we dont always succeed the first time but persist and we can overcome, true way of the warrior. Its shows true confidence, mastery, and humility. Thank You

  • As you could guessed, all these breaking techniques were developed by me. In all my life, learning all kinds of martial arts and mixed them to creat new techniques and so on. I have a whole bunch more of techniques too but I'm afraid of "monkey see monkey do" stuff. My very own students know what I'm talking about... ;) Try to keep those scary techniques to my students only to learn... Thank you for your very kind reply too. You are truely gentleman... Thank you!

  • that is sooooo fake y when he chop does wood into pieces its still straight it must be like thisVVVVVVVVVV not like this if u get it dont taik to me if not well dont taik to me --------

  • So easy for people to say it's fake...maybe you ought to break a few boards before you try talking down on someone far better then yourself. Would your face break in a VVVVVV if he did the same?

  • ouch very very impressive

  • hey i was in you class for awhile. by the way it's randy timbers. the one with index finger look like it hurt when it didn't brake. good job sir

  • How are you? Long time no see... Yes it hurts very bad, when it doesn't break. as you could see how hard I've been strike, and second try... Yes... it broke... ; )

  • Great job sir! That looked like you really needed a lot of consentration.

  • Woops guess the first one did post haha. Anyway, great job guys!

  • I saw into the first minute of the clip and you can't help be be amazed by the technique Master Kim presents. I studied under Rensei John Bak in Hanover and for my first class I can honestly say I'm very fortunate to have Master Kim as my teacher.

  • I've only seen one minute into the video so far, and I'm already amazed. I'm very fortunate to have Master Joe Kim as my teacher! Good job on the commentating Jason :D I think that's who it was...haha

  • Thank you all...!!! It gives me more comfort... ha ha ha...! I might put another video some time near. Maybe self-defense tech, or Cane techniques, or Throwing techniques perhaps..... May 31st is our Black belt test in Mount Forest. after that I might take more video and put them up. I promise... again, Thank you all.

  • Master Kim, My regards on your demonstrations, very impressive. From one Durhamite to another, well done. T.Stoddart

  • Hi Master Kim! Very impressive demo!

  • Wow these are amazing!

  • Thank you...! We have one more breaking technique video is on the way. It is Three 2 inch thick concrete slab breaking by open back hand.

  • Wow those are some really good striking techniques. I hope you do more videos. Great job Sir.
