There was a time in Alfred Deller's day, when there was "only" one countertenor. Thankfully, today we have the priviledge of choosing a "favorite" from many wonderful countertenors worldwide based on our own particular ear for vocal style and performance. There's room and a growing repetoire for all - supported by their faithful fans. By being gracious, we can support "The Countertenor Voice" so it does not fade away as it did in the 1900s.
you must think we value you opinion? I myself am a countertenor and It is the most beautiful vocal range ever. Only true lovers of music can understand it and it is obvious that you yourself have a lot of growing up to do.
I have a question about the text, if any one can help me. Why does it say "amato" and not "amata"? This is meant to be sung by a man about a woman, right? What am I missing?
Thanks for the reply. However, I'm still not clear about something. So 'bene' in the second line is a noun modified by the adjective 'amato'? I thought it is the adverb and modifies the adjective "amato," thus meaning "oh well loved one." How would you translate it differently? If "bene" is the noun, then it would have to mean "where are you/the good that is loved/come, to my soul give comfort." Is that it? Somehow it doesn't sound right...
In the translation Civileso has kindly provided, Keneth Chalmers also translates it as "my beloved." So "amato" is qualifing a person. But why is the adjective masculine?
I can't help thinking that "amato bene" means "well loved." After all Italian has the expression "volere bene," quindi si puo anche dire "amare bene" ed "amato bene."
zeroOtwo I dont think you should be watching this if you do not know anything about the male range. He is a Countertenor. He is supposed to sing high like that
Then it would be transposed. Do you have any idea about what transposing down an aria really implies in matter of orchestration, to respect the harmony? I much prefer keeping things exactly like they are written and asking a countertenor or a mezzo to sing the part, although they're not castrati. If it's written for a high male voice, it must be sung by a man or by a woman who sounds like a man. Otherwise, the intentions of the composer are not respected.
Lovely!! I had the privilege to see him perform twice, in Arnhem and in Amsterdam. All through the concert I sobbed, it was so impressive. And, besides, he is so good-looking!!
Thanks for putting these together! I love being able to follow the score. And to whomever suggested transposing opera, WTF?

Yuck. Frantic interpretation and a mediocre countertenor sound.

Sorry, but I find his voice is often quite painful to listen to, hooty and shrill on the top notes. Jeroussky is the *only* counter tenor.

Because in Italian it refers to "bene" and "Il bene" is male gender...In English you haven't such problems...hihihhii!!

I can't figure it out.

I think I figured it out. "Mio bene" must be a term of endearment addressed at one's beloved, male or female.
It occurred to me because in Orfeo ed Euridice, Orfeo sings, "che faro senza il mio bene," referring to Euridice.
I don't think this is a common usage in modern Italian. At least I've never heard it.
endrrahene 2 years ago
The equivalent of "bene" in English is the noun "good", meaning "possession" (and also merchandise)
Arriyad1 2 years ago
Yes, but "bene" is a masculine noun. You cannot say "amata bene", even if you are referring to a woman
lorchis1 2 years ago
But I'm thinking you can probably call her il mio bene. I think it's used as a noun here, not as an adjective that modifies the person... .

furthermore given that the role was written for Senesino a castrato not a falsettista i rest my case Men should sing like Men!
zeroOtwo 3 years ago
So who's going to sing these arias? Only castrati? This is ridiculous.
