Just saw the movie and i'm not sure what to make of it. Didn't hate it, but i haven't read the novel so I don't know any of the character's or their backstory etc.
And there wasn't that much sex in it. There was only like two sex scenes i can remember, unless the version i watched was edited for tv or something.
I never read the book but I watched the movie. It was a little hard to follow at times, but not too difficult. I loved this film and thought the action sequences were astonishing. I like when you said that you wish you hadn't read the book going into the movie: I guess I was lucky that I didn't. On a different note, I just saw the trailer for Viva Riva. i hated the movie; many of the adaptations don't seem to fit.
i hated the way john talked softly which, aside from being annoying, clashes with the strong body he gave himself.
hated the affected speaking manner of rorschach; sounds like he's trying too hard to be intimidating (which comes off as comical), and i never got the sense he acted with a care to others in the book.
i hated the general nihilist tone of the film; the uncelebrated beating of the old nite owl was just disgusting.
imho the original ending would have been more fitting, as it ties together some other contemporary scientific advances, which makes ozymandias seem more like a real genius.
his affiliation with moloch could have been expanded as personal research into psychics, mirroring military research of the day. his tame, sabertooth lynx clearly demonstrates a mastery of genetics. the psychic squid, ironically, creates a place for both of these and explains why john's vision into the future was blocked.
I loved the comic and the movie. I think the problem is people were expecting a huge action film in which the marketing campaign can certainly be blamed for. It's not. It's an drama with superheroes in it.
I saw Watchmen yesterday and was expecting something like Iron Man. I loved it second time viewing cuz I knew what to expect. I'm going to read the novel.
the book was elegant and about as flawless in terms of composition and storytelling as it gets. the movie was clumsy and not very cohesive. But my biggest problem was how TESTOSTERONE heavy it was. That being said, the movie had its merits too.

I dont get it. In the movie its a little more futuristic that 1985. I'm not saying the ship..but i mean the cars and the keyboorad of the computer was like some we have today... i have not read the novel but seen the movie....do they like go back in time to 1985 (i DONT KNOW!)
In the novels they explain that having Doctor Manhattan around and having him create any amounts of particles and matter they want, that their technology skyrocketed, and that "they were only limited to the scientist's imaginations."
Cars haven't changed much. There are still cars from the 80's on the road. The computer looked like it was running Windows 1.0 which came out in 1985...
im sorry to burst all of ur bubbles, but the squid in the book isnt from another dimension,it was manufactured, meaning someone made it, it was fake, not real, wasn't alive, never will be alive, ozymandias just transported the fake alien there to fool the people, it was built with a bomb attached to it (thats what caused the deaths) and in turn, the bomb destroyed the fake alien...allen moore himself set this record strait when the book came out...burn,facial,suck it!
you are right except for the point when you say it had a bomb attached to it, Veidt had been working with Manhattan using and improving his teleportation technology, but it never worked the way Vedit wanted and every living thing just exploded after being teleported someplace, he didn't need any bomb, just teleported the creature to middle N.Y knowing that something with suck a high and weight would not only die in the process but kill millions by doing so in the explotion.
great fight scenes. some of the physics looked ridiculous, though. with ozymandas i can understand some of the crazy shit he was doing (because he is basically a peak human), but the lame wire work when silk spectre or nite owl II would kick a guy was unecessary.
I dont read comic books but this was a good movie, I didnt like seeing the naked blue guy walk around but besides that this was a really good movie and the super hero gril was super hot!
Really good movie in my opinion. Not as good as the book ofcourse, but still. The ending was almost better in a way, i think the entire novel and film try to stress the idea of realism in an unrealistic world... if that makes sense xD.
The way it ended in the film prooved that man kind only unites when threatened and will only stay that way if the threat is consistent. Fantastic movie, fantastic book.
I sure hope you mean bad as in 'bad ass' or something. The soundtrack was incredible. I agree there were 1 or 2 tracks in there that made things a little 'goofy', but the scoring was awesome, especially during the final scenes. Loving that Mozart's requiem bit in there, gave me goosebumps.
Ive been waiting for this movie to be made for years and i have to say that im pretty pleased with the overall result. As for the whole "giant alien space squid vs. doomsday device" i have to say i don't think the space squid thing would have played out as well on the big screen. i think the change actually made more sense and seemed more "logical" for lack of a better word. Now i would have to agree that the sex scenes were surprisingly graphic. i mean, im no prude but whoa!
why do people keep talking about the sex scenes being so graphic? they were pretty tame compared to a lot of movies I've seen (r-rated or non-rated). i guess it's all relative.
Everybody stop complaining about Doc's blue cobra alright, just ignore it like i did in the book i was like "alright thats weird" and kept reading but i didnt obsess about it lol
yeah the movie was good but i thought it could have done without the sex scene and the random-ass saving children from a burning building scene.. basically that whole dan/jupiter development was kinda meh
is there any intense violence like beheadings, or the dismemberment of body parts, slashing people open, or seeing the people splat when they fall off a building. and is the nudity bad, because the writer of the comics cant be that sick and twisted to acctually draw out people DOING IT
Yeah there is. You should read the comic, there are... oh... three sex scenes in the comic, one being unsucessful, two being successful, there's only two in the movie, not including the rape. The rape is only attempted, not actual rape. He's stopped before that happens.
Lots of violence, and gore, Dr. Manhattan doesn't wear clothes very often, but that's his character and you can't expect them to change that.
There is a lot of not needed cussing, but besides that it is a wonderful movie.
the sex scenes were kinda , "like wtf?" i didnt seem to care about dr. math. wang though. i understood his role as not caring about human manerism anymore.
I want to see it! these discussions are very interesting to me because if a film's not perfect in every way it enables you to have your own opinion which is what culture is all about LOL
Ok, I been reading comics/graphic novel for almost 20 years. I didnt HATE this movie but it just felt a little FLAT. Rorschach, was incredible!!! I'm here in New York, the theater was full. Most, everyone had this look on their faces like we just been robbed. My girlfriend Hated it. Overall, as a comic book fan I say support it. But it just didn't have that WOW factor. 2 1/2 stars out of 5
Change of the ending has changed the nations-of-the-world's MOTIVATION for peace.
Novel: nations of the world join together to essentially be prepared in the event of a possible otherdimensional invasion. They join together to be ready, to plan, to work side by side.
Film: the nations join together (or at least drop hostilities) for fear of Dr. M supposedly punishing them (again), like a god threat.
Not the same motivation, and a helluva lot darker as motivations go.
I think it's pretty weak to tell someone he can't think deeply when you yourself seem incapable of giving a good argument as to why he's wrong.
I'm not saying either ending is better, but I wouldn't necessarily follow the line of thought that 'by default', makes every argument in favor of the movie script over the graphic novel, one made by someone who lacks intellect. Simply stating that the graphic novel is superior on any point doesn't simply make it so.
You miss the point. I am not debating which ending is better, I merely stated my preferences because of the clear difference between the endings in the motivation for world-peace. TeamPG thinks there is no difference between the motivations. I and others state there is, and why.
The entity was powerful and god like in BOTH cases.
The difference to me was that the "squid" was not a believable menace. And it "dies" the instant it arrives on earth, so how could you possibly "prepare" for another one?
Dr Manhattan attacking multiple urban locations at once? Already a fear of the other countries (remember how quickly he ended the Nam), and served as a "nuclear deterrant" much more effectively.
The alien/interdimensional threat in the book is not "godlike"... in fact the first one mankind sees is dead, meaning we know they can be killed/die. You're assuming things from insider knowledge (revelations by Ozymandias) that none of the world leaders would know. See, that is the point-- the "squid" is generally an unknown threat, alien mind-blower (literally) that shocks the world into waking up, forces humankind to come together to study and evaluate it, for the sake of mankind.
But in the film? Do what Dr. Manhattan says, don't wipe mankind out with war, or he, the new god (remember 'Nam indeed, and the worship he receives) will wipe you all out in the blink of an eye and there is pretty much no defense (how very Biblical, lol).
are you retarded or what, I'm just gonna quote last comment I made: imagine everything is just real, America's greatest weapon kills millions of lifes, not only in america, without any reason or warning, in cold war, that would be more of an excuse for an egemonic domination from USA, not to unite the world in condolences, if you know how things were in "the cold war", you would know that russia would have probably finish Manhattan's job. with a nuke and that's it for 80% of humanity.
Alan Moore knew that you stupid fuck, in the graphic novel the point wasn't that the squid showed up dead, the point was that there was a possible alien fucking invation, there is no way the world is going to ignore this, even when the first taste of the invation was the death of half new york, this was Veidt's idea, only something as dramatic as this could join humanity and end the conflict, because it was a threat "beyond" every thing war has a stake in. all the opossite from Manhattan.
yeah but do you know how fucking stupid a giant alien squid would look in a movie? lol
and it wouldve made the movie an extra 20-30 minutes longer for them to explain the fake alien crap, so they had to do it the way they did for the sake of cinema
you say that because you are thinking about the alien you saw on the comic book, you don´t have any cinematic sense of realism do you, it´s like people before the movie saying ¿do you know how stupid would nite owl look on the film?, or ¿do you know how stupid would be to see this big blue geek manhattan on the film?
well even if snyder had put the alien there, I think it would have been like a big dark squid and that eye would have been like red with blood everywere, it would have been more scary than ridiulous for me.
Manhattan was war's and America's greatest weapon, there is no way it would work better, that's just stupid, it's like if some isrraely extremist blows up the white house, and you spect there ain't gonna be war just because isrraely president shows up saying, oh! it's terrible this guy blowed himself up, I didn't knew he could be so bad sorry I'm gonna send my army to help rebuild the white house,,, C'mon boy!
Nixon and the US had NO control over Dr Manhattan towards the end of the story, and the Russians knew that.
All the nations came together out of fear of Dr Manhattan at the end of the movie. He could attack anywhere at anytime, and no one could stop him, or understand his motivations.
ha ha and tell me, what was the reason Manhattan had to attack humans?, just because he was pissed of over the cancer incident, I don´t think that´s very convincent, in the other hand an alien squid can kick the shit out of humanity without any reason, and humans would only get the same reaction over this: this unknown son of a bitch mess with our planet lets gather and prepare ourselves for vengance in case they wish to come back again.
Novel ending: If we work together we may triumph over common enemy and maybe learn something about each other.
Movie ending: We shouldn't fight each other beacuse we're now caged slaves who will be killed if we do and thus are no-longer in control of our own destinies.
Very different. I much prefer the graphic novel ending.
Both endings invovled fear of a godlike unstoppable super entity who could utterly destroy millions of life in the blink of an eye, and whose motives are completely imperceptible to the human mind.
The movie increased believability of the "end game", since the power of Dr Manhattan was already a growing fear in the world. That and I think the movie would have had to be another hour in length just to explain the "squid".
The allegedly otherdimensional "squid" is not unstoppable in the world's eyes-- the first one mankind sees is dead.
And in the film,Dr. Manhattan as scapegoat forces the peace-- no matter what mankind thinks of HIS motives, they know the new rule and must bow to it or die.
A way to look at the difference is:
book-- mankind chooses to work together for a common goal
film-- mankind is commanded not to have war and destroy themselves, or else they will .. be destroyed (how very Biblical lol).
imagine everything is just real, America's greatest weapon kills millions of lifes, not only in america, without any reason or warning, in cold war, that would be more of an excuse for an egemonic domination from USA, not to unite the world in condolences, if you know how things were in "the cold war", you would know that russia would have probably finish Manhattan's job. with a nuke and that's it for 80% of humanity.
I agree with you Diskatopia. although I basically dug the movie and had never read the graphic novel, I would have preferred the ending motives for peace as they were in the novel. maybe that's why the last half hour seemed to me less interesting and not as strong as the rest of the movie.
Hell yeah Watchmen!! My favorite character was Rorschach in that prison scene too where he said "Im not stuck in here with you, youre all stuck in here with me". Fuckin badass.
That was a great scene... and like most of the great scenes in the film, was pretty much replicating a scene from the graphic novel.
I reread the GN for the 3rd time the day before seeing the film, and was pretty pleased by how much they kept pretty much as it was in the lit. And some small changes were improvements maybe (saw instead of arcwelder, Rorschach getting mask back in office of psych, etc).
But the ending peace-motivational change .. ehhh, it was a mistake IMO.
I like them and this made me feel really happy. I want to make some of these little lovlies and think of Julie and what's her name. This project fills me with love and holiday joy. i will support the home made things! I LIKE THEM
I thought the movie was pretty good..not the masterpiece we were all waiting for....i think what sorta killed it for me was the terrible soundtrack to the movie..the music choices didn't match the action and the songs were just plain stupid for this type of movie.
i was so the same. i had started to read the graphic novel, and realised it wasnt really my thing and stopped reading it. then i saw the trailer and was really unimpressed. then i saw the movie today just out of curiosity, and loved it!
I never read the Watchmen prior to viewing the film. But man I loved it. It was fucking awesome. One of my favorite scenes was when Rorschack whooped ass in prison. First when he burned the black dude's face off, and then when he took on the midget mobster and his goons.
i was impressed with the film. Had a dark and sinister ambience. Rorschach's narrative was darkly lyrical and true to the novel. It would have been an extremely difficult task to work this into a film and the director and cast met the challenge. Some purist will no doubt be disappointed. I loved it.
Liked it but was disappointed as well. My only problem was that you couldn't really feel the momentum with the last 30 min. Well hopefully the directors cut has all the characters and scenes that were cut out of this one and hat will probably make the last 30 min. even better.
Saw it. Loved it. Thought the change to the ending was not a big deal and anyone bitching about it is overreacting. The ending makes a little more sense to me anyway, and not as cheesy. Sorry, if they filmed it as-written I think a lot of audience members would have just scoffed. Glad you liked it Cenk
Just saw the movie and i'm not sure what to make of it. Didn't hate it, but i haven't read the novel so I don't know any of the character's or their backstory etc.

I dont get it. In the movie its a little more futuristic that 1985. I'm not saying the ship..but i mean the cars and the keyboorad of the computer was like some we have today... i have not read the novel but seen the movie....do they like go back in time to 1985 (i DONT KNOW!)
Petercalloduty76 2 years ago
In the novels they explain that having Doctor Manhattan around and having him create any amounts of particles and matter they want, that their technology skyrocketed, and that "they were only limited to the scientist's imaginations."
nicholaswright2006 2 years ago
Cars haven't changed much. There are still cars from the 80's on the road. The computer looked like it was running Windows 1.0 which came out in 1985...
movieguystarraisin 2 years ago
Its an alternative 1985, Dr. Manhattan sped up the development of technology.
And they had keyboards, QWERTY keyboards, in 1985 brainiac. The computer The Owl uses is old. Also the first Electric car was made 250 years ago.

im sorry to burst all of ur bubbles, but the squid in the book isnt from another dimension,it was manufactured, meaning someone made it, it was fake, not real, wasn't alive, never will be alive, ozymandias just transported the fake alien there to fool the people, it was built with a bomb attached to it (thats what caused the deaths) and in turn, the bomb destroyed the fake alien...allen moore himself set this record strait when the book came out...burn,facial,suck it!
ManSlayer917 3 years ago
you are right except for the point when you say it had a bomb attached to it, Veidt had been working with Manhattan using and improving his teleportation technology, but it never worked the way Vedit wanted and every living thing just exploded after being teleported someplace, he didn't need any bomb, just teleported the creature to middle N.Y knowing that something with suck a high and weight would not only die in the process but kill millions by doing so in the explotion.

great fight scenes. some of the physics looked ridiculous, though. with ozymandas i can understand some of the crazy shit he was doing (because he is basically a peak human), but the lame wire work when silk spectre or nite owl II would kick a guy was unecessary.

Fantastic movie, fantastic book.

why doesn't he talk about how bad the soundtrack was?
MikeMJPMUNCH 3 years ago

Now i would have to agree that the sex scenes were surprisingly graphic. i mean, im no prude but whoa!
elkadir70 3 years ago
why do people keep talking about the sex scenes being so graphic? they were pretty tame compared to a lot of movies I've seen (r-rated or non-rated). i guess it's all relative.

is there any intense violence like beheadings, or the dismemberment of body parts, slashing people open, or seeing the people splat when they fall off a building. and is the nudity bad, because the writer of the comics cant be that sick and twisted to acctually draw out people DOING IT
cucumber288 3 years ago
Yeah there is. You should read the comic, there are... oh... three sex scenes in the comic, one being unsucessful, two being successful, there's only two in the movie, not including the rape. The rape is only attempted, not actual rape. He's stopped before that happens.
Lots of violence, and gore, Dr. Manhattan doesn't wear clothes very often, but that's his character and you can't expect them to change that.
There is a lot of not needed cussing, but besides that it is a wonderful movie.
alliaa 3 years ago
the sex scenes were kinda , "like wtf?" i didnt seem to care about dr. math. wang though. i understood his role as not caring about human manerism anymore.
i didnt think it was too violent either.

SPOILER
Cenk,
Change of the ending has changed the nations-of-the-world's MOTIVATION for peace.
Diskatopia 3 years ago
SPOILER
To be brief--
Novel: Let us strive together to be prepared against a possible common enemy to humankind.
Film: Let us be good or the ex-human "god" will smite us.
Not really a good change IMO.
Diskatopia 3 years ago
You fail! The ending had the same idea, served the same purpose. I see almost no difference besides the fact that the alien wasn't included.
TeamProGaming 3 years ago
Sorry you can't think deeply. Good luck with your GED.
Diskatopia 3 years ago
I think it's pretty weak to tell someone he can't think deeply when you yourself seem incapable of giving a good argument as to why he's wrong.
I'm not saying either ending is better, but I wouldn't necessarily follow the line of thought that 'by default', makes every argument in favor of the movie script over the graphic novel, one made by someone who lacks intellect. Simply stating that the graphic novel is superior on any point doesn't simply make it so.
Omniayt 3 years ago 2
You miss the point. I am not debating which ending is better, I merely stated my preferences because of the clear difference between the endings in the motivation for world-peace. TeamPG thinks there is no difference between the motivations. I and others state there is, and why.
Diskatopia 3 years ago
Dude, don't be insulting.
The entity was powerful and god like in BOTH cases.
The difference to me was that the "squid" was not a believable menace. And it "dies" the instant it arrives on earth, so how could you possibly "prepare" for another one?
Dr Manhattan attacking multiple urban locations at once? Already a fear of the other countries (remember how quickly he ended the Nam), and served as a "nuclear deterrant" much more effectively.
smaugfrost 3 years ago
SPOILER
The alien/interdimensional threat in the book is not "godlike"... in fact the first one mankind sees is dead, meaning we know they can be killed/die. You're assuming things from insider knowledge (revelations by Ozymandias) that none of the world leaders would know. See, that is the point-- the "squid" is generally an unknown threat, alien mind-blower (literally) that shocks the world into waking up, forces humankind to come together to study and evaluate it, for the sake of mankind.
Diskatopia 3 years ago
SPOILER
But in the film? Do what Dr. Manhattan says, don't wipe mankind out with war, or he, the new god (remember 'Nam indeed, and the worship he receives) will wipe you all out in the blink of an eye and there is pretty much no defense (how very Biblical, lol).
Diskatopia 3 years ago
are you retarded or what, I'm just gonna quote last comment I made: imagine everything is just real, America's greatest weapon kills millions of lifes, not only in america, without any reason or warning, in cold war, that would be more of an excuse for an egemonic domination from USA, not to unite the world in condolences, if you know how things were in "the cold war", you would know that russia would have probably finish Manhattan's job. with a nuke and that's it for 80% of humanity.
kurono1999 3 years ago
Alan Moore knew that you stupid fuck, in the graphic novel the point wasn't that the squid showed up dead, the point was that there was a possible alien fucking invation, there is no way the world is going to ignore this, even when the first taste of the invation was the death of half new york, this was Veidt's idea, only something as dramatic as this could join humanity and end the conflict, because it was a threat "beyond" every thing war has a stake in. all the opossite from Manhattan.
kurono1999 3 years ago
yeah but do you know how fucking stupid a giant alien squid would look in a movie? lol
and it wouldve made the movie an extra 20-30 minutes longer for them to explain the fake alien crap, so they had to do it the way they did for the sake of cinema
PyroAnarchist23 3 years ago
you say that because you are thinking about the alien you saw on the comic book, you don´t have any cinematic sense of realism do you, it´s like people before the movie saying ¿do you know how stupid would nite owl look on the film?, or ¿do you know how stupid would be to see this big blue geek manhattan on the film?
kurono1999 3 years ago
good point, but that would still look a bit ridiculous on film to me lol
PyroAnarchist23 3 years ago
well even if snyder had put the alien there, I think it would have been like a big dark squid and that eye would have been like red with blood everywere, it would have been more scary than ridiulous for me.
kurono1999 3 years ago
that would be a bitch to CGI XD
PyroAnarchist23 3 years ago
Manhattan was war's and America's greatest weapon, there is no way it would work better, that's just stupid, it's like if some isrraely extremist blows up the white house, and you spect there ain't gonna be war just because isrraely president shows up saying, oh! it's terrible this guy blowed himself up, I didn't knew he could be so bad sorry I'm gonna send my army to help rebuild the white house,,, C'mon boy!
kurono1999 3 years ago 2
You are forgetting one thing.
Nixon and the US had NO control over Dr Manhattan towards the end of the story, and the Russians knew that.
All the nations came together out of fear of Dr Manhattan at the end of the movie. He could attack anywhere at anytime, and no one could stop him, or understand his motivations.
Just like the psycho squid.
smaugfrost 3 years ago
ha ha and tell me, what was the reason Manhattan had to attack humans?, just because he was pissed of over the cancer incident, I don´t think that´s very convincent, in the other hand an alien squid can kick the shit out of humanity without any reason, and humans would only get the same reaction over this: this unknown son of a bitch mess with our planet lets gather and prepare ourselves for vengance in case they wish to come back again.
kurono1999 3 years ago
i felt the same. the alien idea may seem more ridiculous, but its easier to understand. blaming it on manhatten had to many plot holes in the plan.
trevonturner 3 years ago
I agree.
Novel ending: If we work together we may triumph over common enemy and maybe learn something about each other.
Movie ending: We shouldn't fight each other beacuse we're now caged slaves who will be killed if we do and thus are no-longer in control of our own destinies.
Very different. I much prefer the graphic novel ending.
indiesk8r1 3 years ago
Got to disagee with you...
That and I think the movie would have had to be another hour in length just to explain the "squid".
smaugfrost 3 years ago
The allegedly otherdimensional "squid" is not unstoppable in the world's eyes-- the first one mankind sees is dead.
And in the film,Dr. Manhattan as scapegoat forces the peace-- no matter what mankind thinks of HIS motives, they know the new rule and must bow to it or die.
A way to look at the difference is:
book-- mankind chooses to work together for a common goal
film-- mankind is commanded not to have war and destroy themselves, or else they will .. be destroyed (how very Biblical lol).
Diskatopia 3 years ago

kurono1999 3 years ago
I agree with you Diskatopia. although I basically dug the movie and had never read the graphic novel, I would have preferred the ending motives for peace as they were in the novel. maybe that's why the last half hour seemed to me less interesting and not as strong as the rest of the movie.

But the ending peace-motivational change .. ehhh, it was a mistake IMO.

i was impressed with the film. Had a dark and sinister ambience. Rorschach's narrative was darkly lyrical and true to the novel. It would have been an extremely difficult task to work this into a film and the director and cast met the challenge. Some purist will no doubt be disappointed. I loved it.
