I'm pretty sure both crowds were making good and bad decisions. Some cops might have been using unnecessary force, while some might have just been defending themselves, or others only doing their job. If I were one of the police, I sure do know that I would have been pretty scared, to be hated by a crowd as big as that.

He was hit with a hammer, bottle, and many other things, the person next to him was hit in the chest with a brick and cracked a rib i believe. Keep in mind, these people did not have any protection except for a helmet.
