  • I like his jazz tuning. It makes him very unique!

  • i just want to be like "play 32 bars with out any 8th notes" he would be fucked

  • Today's most unique sounding drummer

  • That's it - signing up for the next masterclass in my town.

  • Does it look like he has the worst black eye at 2.21 or what???

Mind you if I'd be happy to trade a black eye 24/7 to be able to play like Keith!!

  • Does it look like he has the worst black eye at 2.21 or what???

  • It's painful for me to watch the way he grips the stick with his left hand...I feel like it's about to slip out of his hand at any second...

  • i'm curious why he holds his left stick so far down. but obviously it works for him

  • @sjproductions100

It looks to coincide with the way he angles his snare. I guess so you don't get those accidentals rim shots.

  • Hey Folks. . You can see and hear Keith in action on the new RUDDER live DVD. over 2 hours of footage, and a big keith drum solo. Four Camera shoot, mixed by nic hard. nineteeneight (dot) com

  • His background is marching, simular Steve Gadd, and those chops DO come out. But the "unorthodox" movements produce the most happening groove the world has ever seen; sounds almost like a Marching Shuffle - New Orleans, etc. He lays it down so uniquely and definitively with confidence. I wonder what the story is behind the double press hits on the snare and hats; looks like it came from drum corp, perhaps a direct reference to his original training (?)

  • @mechmove I recall hearing Keith say in another YT video that he was originally in something akin to drum corp - and that things changed/helped when he was taught the Moeller technique (which he seemed to say is not prominent in drum corp)...

  • @davss5 for sure, any form of rudimental drumming is only a start! there are so many other techniques that need to be learned when transitioning to drumset.

  • @TheGrahamcracker95 and i am sure that bass is not a big fan of your spelling.

  • It's sound better if you take away that little pad. LOL Gotta love WK

  • so sensitive! damn. he is a true rebounder!

  • Hmm when he was playing on the practice pad his traditional grip looks great, but I notice that his fulcrum is waaaaay back on the left stick a lot. Not that it seems to matter for him though :P

  • thats a while bakk , now this nigga lost weight .

  • I don't know if I would call him underrated, he has had many a feature in magazines all over.

  • The only bad thing I can say is that his solo's do sound the same almost everytime and I don't like it because on records he is so versatile but from his solo's he almost sounds like a 1 trick pony at times.

  • his technique is freaking crazy

  • this man is divinely incomparable, thats why he is one of my favorites

  • Keith is poised, skilled, and experienced.

We know he would appreciate drumming's next big thing MMA's Ray "3 Hands" Snow ( ray3handssnowdotcom )

    He's changing the instrument.

  • @MyHandsofstone shameless self promotion ..

  • @beats1969

    Someone sounds jealous.

  • What's up with Keith's eye sockets? It's gotta be either drugs or a scuba diving accident.

  • I think the hardest job to do on this video has to be held by the guy who sells the snow cones. I say that because I once had a summer job when I was a kid, selling snow cones and believe you me, it is no easy task.

  • how could you scroll facebook or twitter on your phone when keith's drumming? (re: :37 - :42)

  • I saw him with John Mayer in August and he just blew me away!!

  • love the boomy kick

  • Comment removed

  • 3:56 is pure percussive sex. plain and simple.

  • @portnoyisthebest Yeah, of course you like the shredding..

  • i wish he was my drum teacher he's great !!!

  • I didnt know he is such a well known drummer / famous drummer

    whatever

and he gets 750 e mail per hour WOW

i just love his playing on Tal Wilkenfelds CD

actually if it wasnt for Keith Carlock i wouldnt enjoy Jazz drumming that much

because most Jazz drumming is to Free and impovisational to me

not his i think hes the rocker of the jazz drummers he hits the drums very

strong if you know what i mean

  • BEAUTYFULL !!!

  • super good drummer, totally underrated, but he kinda makes porno star faces as he places...just saying

  • see, i know hes really good, like really really good, but i find it so uncomfortable to watch him, his kit is so awkward looking :/

  • I dated him in HIGH SCHOOL- Omg I had no idea where he was now

  • What is the tune at the beginning? it is so sick. someone please tell me

  • @zappa3837 Schizophrenic by Oz Noy

  • for my man chris

  • mark3164

i was their at the cardiff john mayer gig and omg that solo was amazing!!

it would have been steve jordan not jj because most of the new album is recroded with steve jordan and pino palladhino did most of the bass lines but they couldnt make it because of the volcanic ash in the air :)

  • @joeharding1995 yeah Carlock is the touring drummer for Mayer for his current tour...

  • Went to see John Mayer the other day, in Cardiff and was expecting JJ Johnson. Saw the kit, stage left, with KC on the bass drum but still didn't make the link. Then he started playing! The perfect counterpoint to John Mayers guitar.

I know drum solos are not en vogue at the mo. but he did a 30 sec one that I enjoyed for technique and everyone else enjoyed for the rhythm and sheer joy.

    The guy is pure gold.

  • I slagged this guy off on YouTube a little while ago for his booming drums and lack of innovation. I think I missed the point a little. His timekeeping is impeccable and his technique is classic but individual.

  • Keith and Steve Jordan are the best at just groovin'.

  • That groove the last 20 seconds is so smooth. Carlock is a great.

  • He joins the John Mayer tour 4/27 for the rest of the tour

  • never heard keith carwreck b4. hes good. really like the sound of the toms too.

  • does anybody know the name of the song he plays from 5:35 until the end? love that tune.. great drummer, nice style. though i don't personally like the sound of his bass drum it's nice to hear someone who tunes his kit to his own needs, regardless of what people might consider to be 'normal'

  • @plerryferry the name of the song is " schizophrenic" by Oz Noy

  • i saw him with steely dan in 2007. he's the perfect drummer for that band.

  • I went to see him last night in Sunderland he was awsome!!!

  • i went to see him last night, just amazing honestly!

  • From 38-43 wow that is amazing

  • At 3,57, i think it's a combination with ten 32nd notes, and he plays roll stroke with his hands (Rr Ll)

KKRrLlRrLiRrKKL R ... I let you fid for the rest !

    123 4 5 6 78910

It's this way i'm going to work this great rudiment by this great drummer !! He's incredible, he has all qualities !

Maybe i wrote mistakes about this rudiment

    Sorry for my english !!

  • you're all a bunch of cunts, morons and german women! lol! kieth carlock is awesome though.

  • his bass drum sounds awesome :D

  • Anyone catching the rudiment he's playing at about 3:57 till around 4:01?

    It sounds pretty crazy.

  • i think its a mixture of different double stroke rolls

  • Today's most unique sounding player.

  • This guy is amazing, very underated

  • @DWDrummerJon151

Underrated by whom? I've never heard anyone say anything negative about Keith's drumming ability.

  • @larkydozer Underated as in, no-one i know knows who he is, or can't see how unique he is

  • @KarniTreeTones

Wow, really? That's not my experience. Everyone is talking about Keith. Ever since he played with Sting and Steely Dan.

  • @KarniTreeTones

You must have meant to say that he's relatively unknown, not under-rated, for to be under-rated, one must be known.

  • @DWDrummerJon151

He's not under-rated. You need to be publicly criticized in order to be rated. Where are these public polls which place Keith below the top of his profession?

    He's a somewhat unknown drummer, but he's not under-rated.

  • @larkydozer He was actually voted modern drummer's best all around player a few years back.

  • @Etwizzy99

Thanks for pointing that out Etwizzy99.

These kids giving the thumbs up to "he's underated" don't know what they're saying.

  • @larkydozer well that comment was made 11 months ago when he was still rising up

  • @solarcow16

Yeah, he totally hadn't played with Steely Dan, Sting, Rudder, Wayne Krantz, Oz Noy and created his own instructional DVD way back then.

    ...or had he?

  • @solarcow16

11 months ago he'd already been voted MD's best all around player and had toured with Steely Dan and Sting.

You don't know what you're talking about.

  • @larkydozer wow your right lol. Got my dates mixed up, sorry bout that.

  • @DWDrummerJon151 well looking at the musicians he played with, I wouldn't call him underrated. but yeah, not too famous, you're right. flawless dynamics, this man's the boss

  • @DWDrummerJon151 Underated?

  • @DWDrummerJon151 : he's not underrated in my world.....

  • @kevinherbert And what world would that you little fucking Muzztard?Did Mohamed play drums better than him?

  • @raghedpedo : either English is your third language OR you're a recovering crack addict...... I repeat...Carlock is not underrated in my world.....he's right up there with any contemporary drummer I've had the gr8 pleasure of hearing in the past 5 decades.....got it now, face ache?

PS: although I reckon Keith C would agree that Buddy Rich is in a league of his own above ALL drummers...hey, you might have just learned something...you'd better write it down before you forget

  • @kevinherbert OK fruit cake, I guess I misunderstood. I went on your channel and saw that you supported that weirdo pedophile narcissist named Dr. Finkelstein. I guess a political discussion is for another channel. Carlock is probably one of the most unique and original drummers out there. His dynamics and pocket playing is superb.

  • @raghedpedo : so you're an irrational, redneck fascist Zionist...says everything about you, dimwitted schmutter. Closed mind...closed brain.....get out of may way, fuckwit. I couldn't give shit what you think on anything. Fuck AIPAC...I'm a Palestinian supporter, just like the eminent Dr NormanFinkelstein.

    PS: sorry Hudson music....

  • @DWDrummerJon151 Under-rated?! How?

  • great drummer

  • The man grooves HARD!

  • Will Ferrell on bass. WTF?!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Blade's of Glory !!!:L:L

  • @deejaybee WOW i see! lmfao

  • The most unhealthy musician I've ever seen!

I admire his desire to play with his drums undampened but it must piss off his sound tech no end.

  • Actually Keith looks great now!!! He lost alot of weight recently. He's looks real thin. Just got married too. Great gift he has, very original style of playing!!

  • dont like the bass drum sound

  • Pretty sure a man of this much talent and experience knows alot more than you do about how to tune drums

  • wat the fuck all i said i didnt like the sound of his bass drum i didnt say anything of his ability !! can i not have my own views or does a sad fuck like you get off on telling people that there wrong in a way !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • and you sound like a cunt so hey we cant all be winners

  • This just shows that technique isn't everything.

just look at his left hand. Also notice how much he uses his arms, rather than using his wrists.

    amazing drummer

  • @ocaladrummer0

not sure what you mean. how does this video (which shows a true virtuoso with supreme technique) show that "technique isn't everything".

    just confused here.

  • from 0:21 - 0:30 look where he places the stick in his left hand. There is no way you can get as much of a rebound as when you would put it in the 'sweetspot'. This grip that he has developed gives the drummer a lot of control just no rebound.

What's cool about it though is that he does have his own technique that people usually try to stay away from.

he does have his own technique that people usually try to stay away from.

And ya.. that post I made wasn't what I was trying to say

  • hes a moron who doesnt know what the hell he is talking about

  • you calling me a moron ?

  • @ocaladrummer0 ... what do you mean technique isnt everything ... i mean i agree there are other aspects to great drumming besides technique but just look at Keith`s technique . It is a hybrid moeller / finger technique that he learned from Ed Soph . It is a highly developed technique and highly effective as well .

  • @ocaladrummer0 ... watch his incredible moeller / finger technique starting at 4:10 .... his technique is world class and a big part of why he sounds the way he sounds .

  • Keith knows when, and has the ability and presence, to play with finesse or power. His rudiments are solid.,and not just with his hands. His footwork is not to be disregarded in his approach and feel. He is a drummer's drummer. Steely Dan ain't no a's. Thanks Keith!

  • Keith Carlock... a drummer so good and charismatic, he should have his tutorial DVD narrated by the movie previews guy, oh wait... the movie previews guy is dead...

  • awesome drummer! 5:49 - till the end sounds a bit like the chorus of World So Cold by Three Days Grace

  • Gotta say, I'm hatin the whompy bass drum. But Keith is a monster.

  • @avedisdrummer989 that bass drum at 3:48 is probably what you dont like ... man i LOVE that sound ... i am so sick of this processed DW crap .... those drums and the common tuning is lame ...no balls , no tone , no nothing

  • I changed my mind haha It IS a little boomy for my taste, but I turned all my EQ and shit off, and it does sound pretty serious. I'm sick of the "perfect" DW sound too. It's gotten really stale. Listening to this with a fresh pair of ears is refreshing.

  • right on man .... yeah , it is boomy and it does take a bit of getting used to but to me it makes the bass drum sound more like its part of the drumset ... like all the other drums ring and have a tone , shouldn`t the bass drum be like that ?

And also , he said himself that this tuning was only for specific situations . Obviously he tightens up his sound for certain scenarios . But he also said that this tuning was his favorite .

  • But if we don't ?

  • Comment removed

  • cglcon must be a ringo fan.......great thing about carlock is he plays the tune ..not just the drums.....

  • Well cglcon, Don Fagen, Walt Becker, Grover Washington Jr, James Taylor, Wayne Krantz, Mr Sting, Dianna Ross, Leni Stern and Tal Wilkenfeld would argue your point. But what would they know?

  • @cglcon You must be listening with your head under water, then...

  • @cglcon you are obviously deaf

  • I just dont think he is a big deal, he isnt doing anything that some of my friends who play drums could (and have) done, he jsut looks average to me but hey its all based on opinion. OH btw @bangscrashes im not a ringo fan im more or a gavin harrison, thomas lang, neil peart, mike portnoy fan

  • gavin , lang , peart , portnoy ... all great drummers but generally their fans are young and just starting to develop on the drums .... i am guessing you are what .. 17 or 18 ... i hope you dont think i am putting you down .. its just that everyone i know who was a peart , portnoy fan ( including myself ) eventually grew out of it ...its not that we dont like those guys anymore , its just that we realize there is so much more to drumming than what they do

  • Comment removed

  • and a more important point is that most bands cannot have a drummer that plays like neil or mike portnoy ...those guys are perfect for their bands but would be a nightmare in most other bands

  • did u watch and listen to simple things like how perfect his sticking was on that practise pad/snare clip. Not to mention his left hand/kick combo's with ostinato right hand goin, unique sense of timing and groove, very special. I do understand why you're more drawn to these other more 'band based' drummers (except Lang who's more of a soloist) but Carlock has so much to offer, you may have to just listen more carefully, there's a lot goin on : )

  • @ cglcon

The big deal with keith is feel.

  • U crazy !?????

  • i saw him play with steely dan on nov 30th in montreal

  • he is one of the best i've heard, you can dig that style.

  • i havent heard one, not one, bad comment about keith. but he does look like rob thomas with the flu!

  • and he has become fat, good god. I hope he watches his health.

  • yea, 750 e-mails., they're all asking where Keith is playing next!

  • His feel is insane.

  • i wish the dvd wasn't soo expensive. otherwise, i can't wait to see the whole thing one day. i love carlock's distinct style

  • MAN,keith has a dvd out?!?! this is the best news i've heard in a while!!!!:)

  • SO inspirational! Keith's groove is impeccable, his timing is spot on, his technique is beautiful, his drums sound ridiculous...cant say enough great things about him and his playing. 100% original and beautiful!!

  • i dig oz noy expecially with the distinct groovin of keith supporting him

  • wow the studio solves alllllll the kit before sounds terribleeee the bass drum was horrible

  • what are you talking about! its like a bomb before and after!

  • Dude.....that's his sound.....to me his kits sounds like a "New Orleans" kit.....and FYI that kit sounds natural. His drums RESONATE...which is an awesome thing

Most kits you hear is mostly processed and over eq'ed.

  • Ahh Oz Noy, great thanks!

  • Is the Krantz/Carlock/Lefebvre tune used in this promo taken from the new Krantz/Carlock/Lefebvre album?

  • Comment removed

  • moonkef, I believe the song playing at the beginning and end of the video is an Oz Noy tune...

  • Awesome musical, yes MUSICAL, drummer. Speed and chops with no CONTEXT do not impress me. Keith deserves the attention he is getting.

  • I love that sound of the empty bass drums

  • Can't wait to get the dvd! Keith is another level from most, going to get tickets for the steely dan gig in edinburgh!

  • was that rod morganstien. playing bass?

  • badasssss$

  • How can Paul get 750 Emails an Hour?

    Are they Joking?

  • That bass drum sound in the intro is so wonderful, so beautiful and so powerful, that I am practically crying with joy.

    This guy blows my mind.

  • lo, i know!! i want that kick drum

  • good drummer! thats underesetimation.

  • The new cd from Wayne Krantz, Keith Carlock and Tim Lefebvre is out now. It fantastic... dont wait , just get it before this dvd comes out

  • Comment removed

  • gotta smell funky to be funky

  • Keith does some great drumming......He's really got it......

  • Drummers touring in a band DO NOT make millions of bucks; that would be an exaggeration. Becker and Fagan most likely do not each break 1 million a year.

He does have the best gigs on the planet.

But, you right.... Carlock's the man

  • Love that bass drum....sounds like a bomb

  • Saw him 3 years ago with Steely Dan and said he's the best drummer I've ever seen perform with a band..........

  • awsome technique

    shits tight!

  • Great drummer, but you'd think he'd lose some weight playing drums for a living. He needs a bro.

  • This song sounds a whole lot like Stanton Moore's groove.

    Dont hayt im jus sayin

I enjoy both dummers. LVOE THEM both.

If I were a woman, I'd wanna have Keith Carlock's baby. But since I'm a heteroguy, this offer has been rescinded.

  • ya know ive actually heard alot of dude drummers say thats so funny!

  • Great Drummer. New recording from Wayne Krantz Keith Carlock and Tim Lefebvre out on Aug 18

  • I used to be able to go check him out whenever I wanted when he actually hung around UNT...he's on the road nonstop now.

I guess I'll have to settle for Ed Soph :P

  • when did keith hang around unt besides being there when he was at school in the 90's?

  • Rudder was founded at UNT. He was been around the campus with Helbing and Soph most of 2000-2006.

    Wanna see pictures lol?

  • Keith Carlock is a groove machine. Great technique too.

  • man, parts of this are just super awkward....the bit about the emails with the big boss especially. Keith's playing is superb of course.. full of life, flow, and GROOOOOVE...

  • i'd like to figure out his tuning on the bass drum. Probably my favorite part of his set. anyone know???

  • His bass drum is wide open. You get that sound if you use regular heads front and back (like a Remo Ambassador or Evans G1). I've been getting the same thing with a black dot on the batter side and a regular ol' white ambassador on the front. John Bonham played his bass drum like this too.

  • a nice drumset, no muffling in the bass drum

  • Wow. I've never seen someone hold the stick in the left hand that far up. Whatever works..

  • One of a few really good MUSICAL drummers..... My two year-old daughter bops along to Keith.
