First, if it is magnetic, then I know right away it's fake. Second, if it has no markings, odds are it is not silver (however, after you've been doing this for a while, you get to know what's silver just by the look). Finally, I acid test it. That's the only economical way to really know.
I have been doing some of the same things in my spare time. I do mostly jewelry, but am thinking I should do a little more looking around.
My husband is no picker :-) He likes me to just look at the jewelry and leave if he is there, but poor guy, he is always waiting on me so I can pick through one more box! I have won him over with my jewelry buying though, when I pay < $4 and make $30 or more! I would have a great time, if I didn't have to work full-time and could get out more!
you are a very smart man .. gold and sliver is the only true money and when paper notes are done with it we will go back to using gold and silver .. keep collecting because me and a group of friends have grossed 632.095 in gold and sliver togather and it's only 4 of us so if you can work within a group you can build money much faster
@1dandiesmom I used to work at a jewelers tool and supply company, so I had it from those days. You can get it all on eBay or Amazon though. Thanks for your comment!
Just found your channel. Some awesome video's.I 'm doing the same sort of thing over in England (check out my vids) . That Artist's pendant was a great find. Sometimes un marked stuff can really work out a good risk
do you want to sell that letter opener? my mother had the same one and it got stolen several years ago, and she was hurt because it was given to her from someone special. if so i will pay cash or would give you a MS68 2000 $5 gold coin. let me know
Oh wait, do dealers typically buy unmarked silver items? I found a hand mirror that I know is silver but my dealer won't buy it because it isn't marked. I believe that the marking wore off. The mirror has around 3 troy ounces of sterling silver in it.
@Jasonstar94 if you develop a relationship with them they will most of the time, because they know you. They know that you want to do business with them in the future, so they assume you are not cheating them. But it is unlikely anyone will buy it just coming in off the street.
Many of these mirrors are plated silver. For a dealer to buy it they will have to file in deeply and test with acid. Some dealers DO NOT buy unmarked silver.
I go to garage sales and pick out the silver and gold items as well. A couple days ago I found a 10k gold ring for 50 cents which had 70 bucks worth of gold in it. I sold it for 50 to trade for some silver coins :)
ill buy the tiffany off u

How do you know if you are dealing with silver and not some alloy mix?

@RobertMOdell There are 3 things I look for
First, if it is magnetic, then I know right away it's fake. Second, if it has no markings, odds are it is not silver (however, after you've been doing this for a while, you get to know what's silver just by the look). Finally, I acid test it. That's the only economical way to really know.

@Jasonstar94 If he was a good dealer, he would just test it. Thats would take 30 seconds or less.
