My Grandmother has requested this song for her funeral. Does anyone know where I can get sheet music for this? with parts? (Just in case? hopefully I won't need it for years!)
@lostinthetempest ........my acapella group sings this - track it down through Paul Kelly lyrics, I guess. It is wonderful to perform. Hopefully you won't need it for years!
God's perspective? WTF is that supposed to mean? Do you (or alternatively, does the text that you're citing, if that be the case) REALLY know God's perspective? Seems pretty effing arrogant to me. Offensive, even, to anyone that believes in any sort of God at all.
This is an absolutely beautiful song, I was almost crying but I was wondering,
Through process of elimination I've deduced that it's either Eddie Perfect or the guy from Tripod with the glasses singing the really low bass part, does anyone know who it is exactly?
i'd say your right. eddie perfect has about a 3 octave range. i'm pretty sure he is doing the very low hum but he is performing tenor for his solo part
Eddie is singing the bass part on this song. Scod--Scott Edgar--from Tripod is one of the middle parts, and occasionally appears to trade off with Yon for the melody.
Listen to when Eddie sings his verse--the bass part drops out, where it's present for the other verses. Also, Scod tends to be the falsetto parts when Tripod performs (See "Suicide Bomber", and "Gonna Make You Happy Tonight" for examples) and I'm pretty sure he's singing the falsetto on the intro bars of this song here.

GREAT SONG. Horrible Grammar. "Your cup will runneth over" is the same as saying "Your cup will runS over." Horrible. But I love the harmony and general Idea of the song.
That would make sense. or "Your cup will run over." either one. The way they sing it, it's just mixing present and future tense. If they just stick to one tense it sounds so much better.
My point is that it's Old English used incorrectly. Beautiful melody, Grammatically incorrect lyrics. While sometimes bad grammar can fit the song and be acceptable, the lyrics totally detract from the song here and seem inappropriate. I hope the lyricist corrects it in future performaces or printings of the song.
the whole song is based on the 23rd psalm the lyrics DO Not detract from the song. That is the whole point they sung it as a dedication to a friend who had died !
The 23rd psalm is typically read at a funeral. Very appropriate.
Actually, it does still detract because instead of focusing on the comfort and peace it's meant to give, people who are familiar with Old English/Scriptural English will notice the incorrect use of tense and shudder inwardly.
If it was meant as a quote of the 23rd psalm, it should be quoted directly and wouldn't suffer from the mixed tenses. If it was meant as a paraphrase, it should still be given the respect that sacred scripture deserves by having the grammar be correct.
My complaint with the lyrics does not mean however that I dislike the harmonies, the skill of the singers, or what the song is attempting to do. It's just that the grammar mistake is so obvious and distracting that it makes it hard to focus on what the composer, lyricist, and performers are trying to accomplish. That's why I said that I hope it's corrected in future performances and printings. I didn't mean to offend anyone but to offer an opinion, which is what the comments section is for.
oreospapa: in the cd recorded version i believe it has been fixed, but still the very fact that you find one tiny mistake distracting from this entire beautiful song doesn't say much about your appreciation for anything.
Im wit thexev on this one. How can anyone be hung up on something as simple as grammer and context when the purpose was as beautiful and meaningful from a grup of artist who have stepped out of there performance boundarys to pay tribute to a dearly missed friend. You completly missed the point oreospapa.
The original King James translation of Psalm 23 is "My cup doth runneth over" - or to modernise it - "My cup does run over" - so the "runneth" does not have equate to "runs"...
Actually, it IS still wrong. Look at the tenses when you reference Psalms. "Doth" is present tense (equivalent to modern day "does") and so is "Runneth". "Your cup will runneth" is mixing tenses because "Will" is future and "Runneth" is present.
This epitomises the talent that Tripod have. In this way they are reflectant of the Doug Anthony All Stars when they sang "Throw Your Arms Around Me" in a tribute concert for Holly. Not many artists are this good. Us Australians are proud to breed such talent.
This is why these guys are great musicians. They can do songs that make you laugh til you cry, then turn around and do a song like this that makes you cry for a whole different reason.
i saw this live at there christmas show. eddie wasn't there, but it's just as entrancing. it says a lot if a song and its singers can reach into your heart and make it stop for a few minutes. that's what it feels like listeting to this.
