Eight Belles died while racing she came second to a stallion named Big Brown. I cried. I felt horrible that she fell and died. She could've been so much more than just a race horse. R.I.P Eight Belles
the reason why she fell was because her sir had a weak bone thing in his jeans thats what caused her to fall and break her leg at least she aint in pain anymore
@blueroanfilly1 Her sire was Unbridled's Song, son of the fabulous Unbridled.. I never heard anything about genetic defects in the grand dame Eight Belles..
I believe the overall general consensus is that she stumbled, breaking one foot, breaking the other leg trying to catch herself.
So sad either way. She was so beautiful and proud.
This is beautifully done - thank you. I remember watching the race, and the horrifying result that left me in tears. Pretty little girl.. We love you. (Five Stars)
That is an awesome tribute :')I was actually on the way to an Arab show with my horses listening to the race on the radio....it was a sad moment in racing history. 8Bells will never be forgotten.
i can't beleive they euthanized eight belles! it's so sad! i wish she could have been saved. maybe if she only broke one ankle she could have been. :(
I just saw that she will be interred at the Kentucky Derby Museum and will have a special ceremony before the 2009 derby. It fits, she left her heart and her life on that track. I really hate to watch that race, but if you do you will see her run amazing race. She was physically done with furlong to go, she ran away from the rest and chased Big Brown on heart alone. She gave everything she had. Run forever free Eight Bells, I and many others will never forget you.
hey, she said she couldn't find any pictures of her! I think it was a good tribute. It's the thought that counts.
Just to help you out, though, there's a lot of pictures of her on photobucket. I'm working on a tribute right now and that's where I found all of my pics. :)

I would like to see horses banned from racing until they are 6. This could be done gradually so as not to bankrupt the stables and breeders. All you have to do is mention "Ruffian", "Barbaro", and now "Eightbells" and I get upset. These are horses that have died at "class" tracks. eight bells fell because she had to much pressure and was tired out .......she fell on her front ankles and broke them ........its not a mistery!!!!!!!!
I like Big Brown, but it was a bitter sweet victory to me. When 8 bells went down and I heard that she had to be euthanized so sudden, I couldn't even celebrate. I saw the whole crowd looking in that direction, where 8 bells was, instead of looking at Big Brown celebrating. 8 Bells was a magnificent horse, just like all of the racehorses.
I think you have misunderstood, you might think that Big browns owner and trainer gloating afterward knew that the filly broke down, they didnt, and they were shocked later to find out
I wish people didnt assume they know more than a professiona thoroughbred trainer like Larry Jones, she broke down a quarter of a mile after the race CANTERING...she was slowing down...then fell, a horse cant run on broken ankles, the second they broke, she went down, they didnt break during the race at all, adding to the strangeness. How dare ANYONE accuse Larry Jones of not loving his filly!!!!!!!
right. I understood that part but what I didn't get. Was that after the race as they interviewed him he was so excited and happy. Remember barbaro? did his trainer clap and shout and smile when he found out he was injured? no. Neither should Larry Jones have. Im not saying hes a bad trainer. Im saying hes a bad person.
I think one of the most elegant animals on Earth is the horse. It is sad to see them pushed so hard to win a race. The horses should be taken care of a lot better and given time to rest and heal after races. I hate seeing a horse go down after a race or during a race because of exhaustion or broken ankles. My heart goes out to the horses that work so hard to win on the race track. Some suffer greatly afterwards.
this is really dsaid i cried when i saw it happen and when they did an interview with her trainer, it was so sad he was crying and his young daughter was crying, i get up set when my gold fish dies i can imagin losing an animal that was so close to your heart
she was beautiful filly and i pray that she r.i.p. it is a shame that two great horses (Barbaro & Eight bells) had to be put down at such a young age after the biggest race of their lifes.
i love the sport and i want to be a trainer but if i do my horses wont race until there 4 or 5 and i dont care if there not fast enough i just lost my 1 year old thoroughbred gelding to colic a few weeks a go and i broke down into tears when she was just on the track i was jumping up and down and so was everyone else at my party and i just stopped and i was just devastated
Very sad. These are beautiful, large, powerful animals running their hearts out on pencils for legs. What a recipe for disaster. But, hey - it's an American tradition, so don't expect any changes, right? R.I.P. sweet girl.
sadly it has very little to do with the way horses are built. it has far more to do with the horse racing industry. they race the horses far to young to prevent having to pay for a horse whose six years old and not fast enough. if they were really looking out for the health of their animals, they wouldnt back them until they were around three. instead they are backed and being raced at 2 when their bones arent fully developed. damn shame.
Sorry but you are so wrong about that in it is how they are built..well to be more accurate it is the breeding today..If you look at the horses in the 60's and 70's horses race much often when they were 2 years old and held up.....Now lots of people did not know there were a horse disease going on in the early 2000's and brought down the crop of horses...That might have some of the blame on the durability horses these days.....Still it is very sad !
a disease didnt knock out the entire well boned population of thoroughbread bloodstock. and if it did, being an active member in the horse community for quite some time now, beginning way before the 2000s, i would like to know some details on the disease of which you speak. for instance, what its called, what it does, and how the hell hardly anyone in the equine community has every heard of it if it has so severly corrupted the breeding quality of todays top stock.
I did not say the entire population but it did affect a huge percentage in the early 2000's...The name of the disease is call EQUINE PROTOZOAN MYELOENCEPHALITIS! This affects the muscles of the central nervous tissue. They found this out in 1964 and thought they had it under control but in the early 2000 in Kentucky and other high popluation of horse fams an outbreak happen again. But they did get it under control..
In 1984, R.J. McCunney and P.K. Russo published a study entitled Brain Injuries in Boxing. The study demonstrated that the U.S. sport with the highest number of deaths per 100,000 participants was horse racing:
Hey. ight Bells really was a great horse, we can pray she has a good time in horsey heaven, with Seabiscuit, and all of them. She was put down for a humane reason. Would you want to be kept in a stall for the rest of your life in pain when you have the passion of racing? She raced in the th Kentucky Derby EVERY horses dream.
i was at my friends house so i didn't know it happened till the next day. me parents told me and i cried and cried and cried. she's still a champian in my heart. And it's true her memorie still lives on.
Unfortunately there are people out there like you. this is not the time nor place to show your ignorance, haveing no compassion or kindness for others fellings and loss.
if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
Most all the pictures are not of eight bells. They are of other horses. Eight bells has a very slight silver birthmark on her for head. These other colts and horses are brown with a very large white spot on her forhead.
Yes it is nice. (please have actual pictures of her and not fake it, with other horses of the wrong sex.) Eight Bells is black and silver not brown. (sad)
they put her down because she was in too much pain, both her front ankles were broken, she would have probably developed lamanitis, it is sad but i think they made the right choice
While I feel sorry for Eight Bells it should be also noted that over 70 million people in the USA cannot afford or obtain health insurance. These multi-millionaire racehorses get better healthcare than most people do. Sorry but that the bottom line and it's just plain wrong. Just my 2 centavos.
she is the proof that horses shouldn't be raced so young;; remember last year when a horse in belmont broke his leg right in half and finished the race;; she broke her 2 front ancles because the bones of a 3 year old aren't fully developed.. RIP beautiful girl
This is one of the most "remarkable videos's" I have ever seen. What a beauty, this wonderful, beautiful creature in which we mourn here tonight. It was early afternoon when the race ran on TV here. I watched her come up on the outside(tough place to be) she gave heart, soul, & spirit in all, the "ultimate sacrifice of life" in the end. We have her memories and can visit her in our dreams. She's at peace now. Big Brown knew, thus why he threw his Jockey briefly. Run in "her memory Big Brown".
My "empathy's were to the "obvious- NewsGuy2005", too awful knowing some people are so ignorant when it comes to our fellow loving creatures that help us "exist in today's world". Some people are so unfortunate never to have been "LOVED". (?) He sounds cold, callious, and meaningless to anyone or anything! Unfortunate! Obviously loves to curse!
How "PATHETIC" you are?? MUST be horrible, certainly wouldn't want your callious attitude around. Pray you have no children or animals! You obviously have no respect for anyone or creature other than yourself. You must truly be life & love-starved! What a lonely-life! You sound like former NFL star Michael Vick, (Have him reserve you a cell). People like you are the reason the ASPCA have created laws against inhumane treatment of animals. Curious did you write just to curse? Get over yourself!
Showing total grace, this little filly ran with all her heart, soul, and spirit, costing her in the end the "ultimate sacrifice" of life. The heaven's must have opened and offed this young beautiful creature, PEACE! You ran gracefully, you finished 2nd. You made us proud, terrific memories will live on, and we'll meet again in our dreams. Big Brown is mourning in his own way, I believe he knew what happened, and like us, will run in cautiously in her "memory".Rest in peace, see you in my dreams
WRONG, they don't live short lives. Most live quite long, well cared for lives actually. Please, all you horse race bashers, get your facts straight. No one wants this to happen. If it were a jockey who was killed during the race you'd probably be saying that they deserved it or something stupid. Just stop it already. You really sound ridiculous.
Sad to see such a young talented horse go like this. She was doing such a great job in that race to, 2nd place. Way to finish Eight Belles. R.I.P. Such a beautiful horse!
Eight Bells will always be the 2008 Kentucky Derby Winner to me. What heart, what grace, what dedication and determination! She will forever remain in my heart as the greatest of all time! God Bless Eight Bells!
She was so beautiful and had a lot of talent and heart. It wasn't even fair that she died in that rare accident, especially AFTER the race when she was being pulled up.
Anyone that has been to the Derby knows the magic is in the air and your hair stands on end for the derby race. We also know that the whole crowd prays nothing like this will happen. It was so sad to see such a great philly go down on the track. My heart goes out to her human family today!
Poor filly! shes so beautiful, but, atleast now, she'll be in a better place running throught the meadows freely and her front legs wont hurt anymore RIP!
Just to tell the people who think racing is a kind of horse abuse, you guys aren't right.
Every horse in there was trained with care. You have to remember these are thousand pound animals. Plus if racing is abuse, isn't every other horse event in the world abuse? Isn't asking a horse to jump over something taller that itself abuse?
When an amazing racehorse falls, you can only blame it on the lack of judgement, not the sport.
Same thing can happen to horses out in the wild, just as easily. The horses are spoiled practically, the have the best training and the best care, they don't exactly neglect these horses. And this isn't exactly common, I've never seen anything like this ever happen. Sad story though :(
I agree. How many times does this need to happen? Go For Wand, Barbaro, Ruffian. It is happening more often. Horse racing is a rich mans game. To them its money, and a horse is replacable. :(
i do agree i play horse racing fantasy or HRF but i only race 5 and 4 year olds except for my training horse Magikal wind who is a 3 year old i know it not real but i still do it

I think you have misunderstood, you might think that Big browns owner and trainer gloating afterward knew that the filly broke down, they didnt, and they were shocked later to find out
ArchDandy1134 3 years ago
The trainer of 8 belles wasnt even available after the race because he was so upset. How is he a bad person???
ArchDandy1134 3 years ago
I wish people didnt assume they know more than a professiona thoroughbred trainer like Larry Jones, she broke down a quarter of a mile after the race CANTERING...she was slowing down...then fell, a horse cant run on broken ankles, the second they broke, she went down, they didnt break during the race at all, adding to the strangeness. How dare ANYONE accuse Larry Jones of not loving his filly!!!!!!!
ArchDandy1134 3 years ago

Some suffer greatly afterwards.
justagirl1001 3 years ago
it's not a mystery how she fell. she was pushed too hard and her ankles broke under the pressure.

I had her to win, but her making it out this

she was beautiful filly and i pray that she r.i.p. it is a shame that two great horses (Barbaro & Eight bells) had to be put down at such a young age after the biggest race of their lifes.

i love the sport and i want to be a trainer but if i do my horses wont race until there 4 or 5 and i dont care if there not fast enough i just lost my 1 year old thoroughbred gelding to colic a few weeks a go and i broke down into tears when she was just on the track i was jumping up and down and so was everyone else at my party and i just stopped and i was just devastated
buckbaby44 3 years ago
Very sad. These are beautiful, large, powerful animals running their hearts out on pencils for legs. What a recipe for disaster. But, hey - it's an American tradition, so don't expect any changes, right? R.I.P. sweet girl.
smmfc 3 years ago
sadly it has very little to do with the way horses are built. it has far more to do with the horse racing industry. they race the horses far to young to prevent having to pay for a horse whose six years old and not fast enough. if they were really looking out for the health of their animals, they wouldnt back them until they were around three. instead they are backed and being raced at 2 when their bones arent fully developed. damn shame.
ghettostarchild59 3 years ago
Sorry but you are so wrong about that in it is how they are built..well to be more accurate it is the breeding today..If you look at the horses in the 60's and 70's horses race much often when they were 2 years old and held up.....Now lots of people did not know there were a horse disease going on in the early 2000's and brought down the crop of horses...That might have some of the blame on the durability horses these days.....Still it is very sad !
texas4life45 3 years ago
a disease didnt knock out the entire well boned population of thoroughbread bloodstock. and if it did, being an active member in the horse community for quite some time now, beginning way before the 2000s, i would like to know some details on the disease of which you speak. for instance, what its called, what it does, and how the hell hardly anyone in the equine community has every heard of it if it has so severly corrupted the breeding quality of todays top stock.
ghettostarchild59 3 years ago

Fatality rates per 100,000 participants
1. Horse racing: 128 (horses) 2. Sky diving: 123 3. Hang gliding: 56 4. Mountaineering: 51 5. Scuba Diving: 11 6. Motorcycle racing: 7 7. College Football: 3 8. Boxing: 1.3

Hey. ight Bells really was a great horse, we can pray she has a good time in horsey heaven, with Seabiscuit, and all of them. She was put down for a humane reason. Would you want to be kept in a stall for the rest of your life in pain when you have the passion of racing? She raced in the th Kentucky Derby EVERY horses dream.

if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
slmwv34 3 years ago

Obviously loves to curse!
mauiplay1 3 years ago
How "PATHETIC" you are?? MUST be horrible, certainly wouldn't want your callious attitude around. Pray you have no children or animals! You obviously have no respect for anyone or creature other than yourself. You must truly be life & love-starved! What a lonely-life! You sound like former NFL star Michael Vick, (Have him reserve you a cell). People like you are the reason the ASPCA have created laws against inhumane treatment of animals. Curious did you write just to curse? Get over yourself!
mauiplay1 3 years ago
Showing total grace, this little filly ran with all her heart, soul, and spirit, costing her in the end the "ultimate sacrifice" of life. The heaven's must have opened and offed this young beautiful creature, PEACE! You ran gracefully, you finished 2nd. You made us proud, terrific memories will live on, and we'll meet again in our dreams. Big Brown is mourning in his own way, I believe he knew what happened, and like us, will run in cautiously in her "memory".Rest in peace, see you in my dreams
mauiplay1 3 years ago
WRONG, they don't live short lives. Most live quite long, well cared for lives actually. Please, all you horse race bashers, get your facts straight. No one wants this to happen. If it were a jockey who was killed during the race you'd probably be saying that they deserved it or something stupid. Just stop it already. You really sound ridiculous.

If people would stop racing horses at age 2, there probably wouldn't as much injuries.
HORSELOVER1522 3 years ago 4
you mean three? 2 year olds are in training if they are three they start racing
roxie2120 2 years ago
Just to tell the people who think racing is a kind of horse abuse, you guys aren't right.
Every horse in there was trained with care. You have to remember these are thousand pound animals. Plus if racing is abuse, isn't every other horse event in the world abuse? Isn't asking a horse to jump over something taller that itself abuse?
When an amazing racehorse falls, you can only blame it on the lack of judgement, not the sport.

i am sorry i was tired i just got back from Padre you think i can get a name right!?
roxie2120 2 years ago
Same thing can happen to horses out in the wild, just as easily. The horses are spoiled practically, the have the best training and the best care, they don't exactly neglect these horses. And this isn't exactly common, I've never seen anything like this ever happen. Sad story though :(
jrouul09 3 years ago
They need to stop racing 3 yr olds. A horse is more mature in both mental and physical ways after age 4.
Yes, 3 yr olds love to run fast. Yet, placing limits on age would really help in reducing race horse accidents.
skipjackbj 3 years ago 2
