i can only imagine someone who grew up listening to this, having no idea what the band looks like, looking it up on YouTube and getting the shock of their life
Do you realize that this is the founder of Electric Light Orchestra and that he could play all of the instruments in this band? In fact on numerous recordings he played a lot of the instruments. And he did have a lot of respect for Phil Spector.
This is one of those moments when I'm not sure what to be most impressed by.. each individual or the group as a whole. I'm digging the french horn, the bass saxophone, angel wings and rollerskates...Roy's intergalactic magician vibe.. the intro drum effect... all so great. Maybe its the Phil Spector approved vocal harmony... wow.. just wow.
roy wood accomplished so many great things with the move then he just went pop rock......i have a hard time seeing the appeal of this on anything but a very shallow level.....fellow move bandmate lynne not only made it bigger than wood with with elo, but (in my estimation) created far moe artistically redeeming music.....i really wish wood and lynne could have made it work out.
Salud !!¡¡

@BedlamZero - it was that! Makes me smile to watch this and remember how I LOVED this song in 1973. Was a Senior in HS and Roy Woods Wizzard was on the midnight playlist on WMMR in Philadelphia with Michael Tierson. I recall those teenage nights falling asleep listening to Michael interview Roy. Incredible and wonderful years indeed.
Greatest bass players of all time? John Entwistle (obviously), Gary Thain, Noel Redding, Jim Lea, Geezer Butler, Flea will all appear on the most thoughtful lists. Greatest bass player on roller skates? That'll be Rick Price :-)
@undrugged Sorry, mate, I thought your reply "No, the bass player is" was an answer to "he's the founder of ELO". Now I saw that alanbstard4 made two postings.
@alanbstard4 I know he has a few of the old outfits in his loft...I must ask about the pads!! I think i'd have seen them at some point in 32 years though so I doubt it.
@kiwizeppelin actually, I think that Roy is better than Spector. There is more to it, and the tunes are marvellous. What a sound, they don't make them like this any more

All Roy Woods work was lengthy, rather than just three lines over and over again. See Black Berry way, etc, meaning he could and did write good music.
Come to Columbus Ohio and Just try and find the Victorian Village's Legendary "Rocknroll Reverend" He walks through the streets singing wonderful songs and wearing the most wonderfully bizzare clothing. Give him a ciggie and he'll be your friend!
This is of course pre-recorded and if you listen to the end you can hear french horns being played. One might suppose they were played by Roy Wood himself.
I remember my mum's bemused/horrified/utterly speechless reaction to seeing this lot on good old t.o.t.p Just when she thought she was getting used to the excessess of Glam Rock it suddenly took a whole new turn! Love it, great memories of a gret era.
i remember when i was young and loved roy wood, my dad saying " oh my your gonna marry a hairy yob, he loved roy wood , however i married a prat not roy wood. dad god rest your soul. love you xx
Angel wings, cricket pads and roller skates...what more could you want? I love band that don't take themselves too seriously, and you could never accuse Wizzard of that!
I was having a blast earlier listening to loads of 70's greats and came across this beauty...unfortunately I think my 12 year old has ruined it for me.
He walked in mid song and said sarcastically "heartwarming song mum" When I asked what me meant he replied "why would anyone sing a song asking you to see their baby die" Be a long time before I hear the real lyrics...thanks son!
Roy could/can play just about anything - I think I may have posted earlier about this video, but it is from the Russell Harty Show from 1973. I read in an article at the time that Roy had actually played 27 instruments (inc French Horn) on this track, not including the overdubs. He never, in my opinion, made enough of the fact that he was such a great multi-instrumentalist.
I am pretty sure the program was "Top of the Pops" in England hosted by Jimmy Saville ..... thanks for posting this takes me back to when I was 10years old watching this on the telly ...
