It's recognized on the census as a religion (in Australia - home sweet home :) - ). It;s simply made up of many variations, grouped together under the 1 name. It's like how Catholicism, Anglican and other such faiths are all termed 'Christianity'. They have the same basic belief system, just different ways of interpretating and doing things.
