I remember that tornado. I was five that year. My parents and I lived just outside of Neenah, WIsconsin. That afternoon, it was so muggy and humid and the sky began to get really black, then it began to downpour and hail and we could see the funnel cloud forming. The tornado went right past our house and took out some trees and a fence. Our neighbor just down on County J got the worst of it. She was killed by the flying debris. Every time it storms, I still think of that day.
Oh Well, and i thought the whole time that my state taxes went toward funding Public Television,i get sooooooooo tired of the Public Broadcasting Network begging for money each and every year,umm-huh its Nova anyways, never liked that show, guess i'll be moving along now.byeeeeeeeee.
My Hometown of Brownsville, Tennessee Population, 10.500 was hit by an F-2 Tornado on April 2nd, 2006 the tornado hit the west side of my hometown no people killed 24 houses destroyed $400,000 thanks to advance warning, warning sirens and a local weather wire to receive the warnings due to the loss of life.
Interesting to see a science program starting off with the religious stuff. Lots of stock 16mm footage in this one. Love the hippie storm chasers "is that smoke or is that debris?" little inside joke there. 78' Topeka storm too! It does good to bring the point home, and offer some hope. New Wavers and Doppler Radar, oh my! The pseudo-Carl Sagan narration helps rather than hinders too. Very excellent blast from the past. Thanks for posting.
Does anyone else realize that, starting at around the 3:40 mark, these clips were almost exactly recreated for the movie "Twister?" I'm sure that this video aided the CGI techs that worked on the movie in creating several of the tornadoes. I just found this interesting. Great documentary! I remember watching this when I was a kid (and being scared of it!.
Holy shit! I was in the barneveld tornado. That was the scariest thing in my life and FYI it was 1984. The only warning we got was a crack of thunder around 1 in the morning. Next thing we know the town is gone but the water tower and the church steeple! Rated f-5
I concure that the apparent tornado is just smoke. The thing for everyone to remember when you think you see a tornado. Watch it for a few seconds for rotation. If there is no rotation, then it's not a tornado.
This almost looks like the same event that Jim leonard was on near Gutabo on a chase, Him and his chase partner saw it and thought it was a tornado. Upon closer inspection it was smoke. The key is to watch for rotation at cloud base and in the actual suspected tornado, and lastly but not least, there has to be a debrie whirl on the ground for it to be a tornado. For those who didn't already know.
It was smoke. That's kind of funny because his chase partner said 'is that a derbies cloud or is that smoke!'. That video is on Tornado Video Classics II but it's hard to see because the credits were rolling in front of it. I also saw it on Twister Fury on the Planes on TLC.
O_O I've just been looking at stuff about the Barneveld, WI tornado...

I love these older 1980s tornado videos. I don't know why, but they are just far more entertaining to me than today's videos.

always watch for rotation at cloud base level, sometimes it will be a lowered cloud base thats rotating (called a wall cloud).

0:43 i think it is the 1978 tornado in topeka, kansas, i think
CabriniMobster 4 years ago
0:48-0:49 is acutually a look-alike. It was just smoke from a fire started by lightning that the chasers mistakenly thought that was a tornado. >_>

That could be it, I believe that happened in June of 1985 so the timing would be right.

It probably was, considering the fact that both occurred in 1985.
