Yes, they can kill fish. The Rose BTA does not have a really strong sting though. I guess it depends on how large/strong the fish is. I'm sure they will tend to stay away while awake, although they could drift into anemone when sleeping.
ok am new with this sport, i have sea anemone fish(not carpet) maroon clown fish, yellow tang, two corals, live rocks,,shrimp and Black Banded Serpent Star ..for now.. i will buy more ..... but my clown fish don't want to eat, i don't know why. ALL of them are hiding behind the rocks. i cant see them all day only at night they are active....do u know why?
@ademovicjasmina dude not to rude but if you are in the salt water hobby the first thing that people tell u is to read... so pick up a book or google it
i hope there a local touch fountains here if you don't know touch fountains its a big fountain with animals that you could touch like anemones sea cucumbers starfish and sea urchins
Well, not really. They just feel sticky and weird, but if you touch it with your tongue then your tongue will blow up like a balloon because the tongue has a thinner skin then your hands so yeah. LOL
PS: me and my friends freaked out when we tried to touch it! And then volunteer and my teacher laughed when they saw our faces! :P
Jesus! Why is it so difficult for people to wrap their minds around the concept of spawning?? IT IS SPAWNING. It's not excreting. I had this anemone for over 3 years. You think it kept it's waste bottled up so much that it only went once during that time???? Don't think so.
@ken668 Yes, mine did that too except in a much worse result. My tank is small and my anemones are monster size. The oxygen level was depleted resulting in some losses. Had to change the water. Both anemones are completely fine after the event.
@ken668 they are capable of both, like other soft corals (such as their close relatives, mushroom corals). If they only reproduced by splitting then anemones wouldn't be found all over the world, nor would there be so many of them. Yours might not spawn due to water conditions that the spawn would survive, but due to heavy feeding they get large and split. I propagate anemones as a business, for what its worth.
@chewitback I am aware that they are capable of both. I too have propagated many anemones (include the one above) as well as a host of other soft and hard corals. Thanks for the info though.
hmmm. Well I have 96 watt 10,000K and 96 watt True Actinic 03 Blue square pin base compact fluorescent lamps in a 46 gallon aquarium, and after two weeks of having the anemone it died...any suggestions? Do I need more light (even though it sounds like you have the same that I do). Any help is most appreciated!!
Unfortunately, it takes more than just lighting to recreate a patch of ocean in our living rooms. The loss could be from any number of factors including, flow, salinity, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia lvls, chemical responses, etc. I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
In this type of sea anemone, the sexes are different. This one is a male and is releasing sperm into the water. The waster currents will bring the sperm in contact with a female who is releasing her eggs the same way. The fertilized egg then develops into a larva called planula. The planula will eventualy settle down and become a sea anemone.
The spawning did not make the water toxic. In fact, the water was clear within a couple hours. With a number of other corals in the tank, I'm sure a lot had been consumed by them. I believe if there were eggs present, then new anemones could be possible. Otherwise this was just the "male" variant by himself.
Sorry, but once the thought popped into my head I had a hard time not laughing! That looks like a really bad case of gas! XD

what kind of lighting do you use for your anemone?

This was a 90g tank. At the time I was using 4x96w Power Compacts for lighting. :)
