  • This was a great game, but not of the same caliber as II, I, and IV.

  • playing this game right know nearing the end on ayns path can anyone tell me why thea levels up so fast

  • Not only my first Phantasy Star experience, but my first roleplaying experience as well. Thank you, dear uncle, for being gone that day we visited; how else could my stepfather have snatched this wonderful game up for his children?

  • im not sure why fans dislike PSIII, sure it wasn't cannon to the other games but it was good, It was the only PS game that had signfiant player choices; depending on who you choose to get married changes the outcome of the game and the protagonist you play.

  • This is one game of all games they remake that they absolutely NEED to remake. This game was amazingly epic.

  • While this game was the worst in the series, the soundtrack wasn't. Phantasy Star has always shone for its music. I'm not talking the shitty online ones either.

  • Annoying game, but I dig the atmosphere and graphics. Kind of reminds me of The 7th Saga.

I still need to try Phantasy Star IV.

  • My favourite song is missing! Dhalia Moon... <3

  • People say this game sucks in the Phantasy Star series but I actually like it.

  • I remember this game both from the console and emulation...

All I remember is that playing it at double speed on the emulator was about the right pacing. It screwed up the music, but the game wasn't quite so tedious.

  • 4:03-4:58 makes me think of the opportunity variant played in Skies of Arcadia boss battles.

  • so what's become of Ippo today?

  • I remember the clerk at the video games shop saying "to clear phantasy star 1 dungeons you need a PHD, for the ones of PS2 you need to be smart, for the ones of PS3 you need the IQ of your teddy bear"...

  • @shiloushilou

Sight is overrated when in the dungeons in phantasy star 1. A blind man has as equal chance in clearing the dungeons as anyone else.

  • @MrGrevy Except for the music.

  • @IamBHM Umm no, not so much. After the battle is won - there is some hideous caucaphony that is just mind bendingly horrible.

  • Having played the game so much, I can attest to the following:

Battle song (Good) : You're gonna go through the battle unharmed (or almost)

Battle song (Normal) (the one starting at 5:10) : You're gonna take a beating, but you'll be fine (Mostly)

Battle song (Bad) : You're gonna take an epic beating, and some of your characters may get killed

the normal battle song is my favourite song from the entire game. gotta love those organs <3

  • Video games = maybe 7th dimension

  • Dude, thanks for this video, its just awesome that someone makes such a good video for this awesome game.

It was my first RPG game and i love it.

  • This game´s music is so great.

  • "why does Rhys look Layan?"

It may be a coincidence...anyway as a kid I did all scenarios to see all endings and I have to say Layan side is overpowered compared to Orakian, the best party leaded by Nial and Laya's twin children can't remember their names.

    Great memories !

  • @Silfe113 wasn't it Gwyn and Adam?

  • True that, thank you :)

  • The guy who made the music for this and PSIV, co-composed the Sonic 2 soundtrack

  • So, Ippo co-composed Emerald Hills, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruins, Casino Nights, Mystic Cave, Sky Chase, and Flying Forteress, and many others ? <3

  • sorry I dont have the individual composer credits for the sonic games

but he definately co-composed the Sonic 2 soundtrack with Masato Nakamura who made the ost for the first sonic game

I'm not sure how much he contributed to it

  • I always enjoyed the fact that each character who joined your party added an element to the overworld music. That was a thoughtful and sweet touch, and does a lot to imply that they really are a team, with each one bringing something unique to the whole.

  • @ruphia Yea, I loved that too. You were really enjoying a new member, cuz when you were alone, the tune was awfully plain ;)

  • I can't find the original names of the songs ! Anybody know them ? 0:06-1:36 : Title 1:36-2:46 : Kidnapping 2:46-3:20 : Dungeons (caves and castles) 3:20-4:03 : Overworld (Rhys alone) 4:03-4:58 : Overworld (full team) 4:58-5:10 : Battle begin 5:10-5:56 : Battle (bad) 5:56-6:30 : Battle (good) 6:30-7:06 : First layan town 7:06-7:51 : Castle 7:51-8:40 : Overworld (main character dead) 8:40-9:38 : Ending i guess 9-38-9:45 : Game Over
  • @DamascusTer

hm, 8:40-9:38 isn't the ending theme, that one sounded different iirc (played it on GBA)

My guess it's a tune played on the world map when certain party-members are dead - adding/having one of them k.o. causes adding/losing 1 sound channel/instrument. Though, I don't think that it makes that much a difference.

I'd like to where to listen to that track in the game :( it's awesome in comparison

5-1 stars (wren's theme is missing, that was one of the few...really good tracks XD)

  • @Sinistral1989 Oh yeah, Wren's theme IS missing, and it was definitely one of the best tracks in the game...

  • I loved most of the music in this game (the combat music was bloody awful though...come to think of it, the entire combat presentation in this game was all-around terrible).

One thing that still confused me about PSIII: if you initially play as an Orakian, why does Rhys look Layan? Orakians were the normal-looking, technological Palmans and the Layans were Espers (strange hair-coloured, magical Palmans).

I guess SEGA wanted players to identify with Rhys as a Rolf-like hero from PS2.

  • Blue hair is also for the hero of Phantasy Star 2, who lives in a technological city...

Also, there are layans with "normal" hair, such as the beautiful Laya herself ! (by the way : PS = Best chara design ever <3)

Sega LOVES the blue ! (Sonic, the Wonder Boy, Rolf, Rhys...) perhaps ?

  • I love the intro, but it goes a bit downhill from there. Very scratchy organs and thin bass/drums, not too memorable compositions.

  • It's cool to see Phantasy Star 3 get some recognition. Usually when the PS series is mentioned, only 2 and 4 get talked about.

  • CrazyKirlia, and some of it makes me want to gouge my ears out. Most music in this game is bad, and this one isn't as good as it should be (because of the bells) but that's my opinion. I really prefer PS 4's music, but everyone's different.

  • I have this music in orchestal style, check my vids

  • Garudoh rocks. 5/5

  • If there's one thing this PS game has over its Genesis brothers (I haven't played PSI, so I can't include it), it's the music. Some of it is beautiful, and almost all of it is endearing. The storyline is pretty nifty, too.

  • This was my first turn based RPG, very fun game and it's cool you can get married and play as your kids.

  • That opening theme pretty much made me want to play this game. It doesn't get much better than that.

  • Phantasy Star III is the game i started playing as a kid when i first owned my genesis it got me into RPG games still fun to play to this day

  • PS3 is one of my favorite games of all time! The storyline is incredible, and the ending brilliant. I remember this music note-for-note, I think I may have to dig out my Genesis just to play this game again.

  • I personally loved Phantasy Star 3. If I'm not mistaken, Generations of Doom introduced some nifty PS icons, such as Rappies and the Wren Type android :D

  • 7:12 Brings back childhood memories

  • OHGOD. I can't even remember if this game is any good, but it was my first RPG and one of the first games I ever beat(the first being A Link to the Past). I the the music in the opening.

I miss being a nerdy five year old with a Sega Genesis Dx

  • everyone says this PS is the black sheep of the series. : ( Best one of all i reckon decent music, wikkid storyline too ^^

  • ... I don't know if this is sad or not... but I beat it front to back three times... It probably just goes to show exactly how increidbly addictive this game was. IT had it ALL... I miss these games so much... they were my babysitter.

  • Me either! I cheated and read ahead on walkthroughs and I still think this game is way ahead of its time because of it! I got up to Niall's generation (maybe halfway through)

  • OHHHH GOD

    SO MUCH NOSTALGIA

its like i'm really 5 years old and watching my brother play sega...

  • I'd like to see this game remade and cleaned up to modern standards, ie: same game minus the gameplay complaints. It really did have a good plot and I loved the way the different marriages affected the society of the game's world. Games these days are only now scratching the surface of that sort of player-based system of consequences.

I think this game was ahead of its time in that way at least. Bad mechanics gave this game a worse rap than it deserved!

  • I agree! It was a very unique way of constructing gameplay and making it more fascinatng and interesting, I was obsessed with this game when I was like 13, I played it constantly even though I was in an age of the PS1, I was reluctant to move from my sega days, and this was my most played game, I couldnt stop playing it cuz there was always something new and interesting in every bit of the game.

  • This was the game that introduced me to Phantasy Star and the Genesis. Though PSIV will always be my favorite, this one has a nostalgia that's hard to deny for me.

  • Yaya I have it on gameboy advanced! ^_^

  • i love the music and the story

  • Skyhaven, FTW.

  • skyhaven was super dope... and so were the satellites.

  • Story was great. Gameplay wasn't. T_T In the previous ones, spells that hit everything wouldn't take a turn for all eight monsters on screen, or all your party members. It would just do it at once.

  • the best game ever.

  • very nice music !

  • A lot of people knock this game and many magazine say its one of the worst games ever. It is a classic game and i for one think its fantastic

  • It gets nostalgia points from me but from an objective view it's not a very good RPG. Most of the game is spent backtracking through temples from one world to another, giving the illusion that the game is longer than it really is. The boss fights are far too easy. The only challenge comes in the way of level grinding, making it feel tedious.

It's generally considered the worst Phantasy Star, and for good reason IMHO.

  • You have good points. However its also the first genesis game I ever played so the nostalgia of the game for me makes up for the lack of quality other people notice.

I think the worst phantasy star would have to be any of the online versions. I'm a classic kind of gamer, change too much of the original elements of the game and it quickly looks and feels like all the other games with little to offer aside from graphics. 2 3 4 will always be my favorite Phantasy Stars.

  • Well I hate the online versions so much that I don't even consider them legit Phantasy Star games, so you'll get no argument from me there. It is certainly FAR from one of the worst games ever. I agree the hating on this game is vastly exaggerated.

Another flaw is that most of the techs are rendered pointless. Some of them are bugged and don't work right, the mele techs are too weak, your weapon works better. Gires & Anti are really the only 2 worth using.

  • <3

Man this brings back memories. Thank you!

  • This game had awesome music... thanks for putting this and the rest up!

  • Muito bom...
