Check out the collection by Vicky Cimprich, "Pretty Mothers Home". You will not find a better description of the time and the place through the eyes of a young girl who chooses a life among the people. Vicky lives in N Kentucky and did her research at Pleasant Hill. Her work is amazing and no one who reads it will ever forget it.
Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill is a gorgeous, fascinating, educational destination. The employees are friendly and welcoming, and there are regular special events, demonstrations, and explanations. They show a terrific film on Shakers there. We recommend it highly! --The Great American Dollhouse Museum
Loved Pleasant Hill, Kentucky! Went two springs ago and pictures were allowed everywhere we went. I, too live in Maine next to the last Shakers in the world.
I live like 20 miles away from Shakertown of Pleasant Hill. When I went it was a woman demonstrating, and she specifically asked that no pictures or video & audio recording devices be used. So this is very interesting.
We have stayed in the Shaker Village, Pleasant Hill (it was a great experience!) - but we did not make it to the music demonstration. So, many thanks for posting!
Interesting. I live along the coast of southern Maine, approx. 25 miles away from a working Shaker village. Not operated by a trust, but operated by the Shakers themselves. It is the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine: the last working Shaker community in the world.
That's true. 4 (or maybe five now), and many volunteers that help make the place run. It's pretty nifty. There are hundreds of acres including the original orchards and a lake surrounded by wooded hills.

And I think it's inhabited only by 4 people, is it?
