What this video reminds me of is the fact that Sammy Davis SHOULD NOT HAVE LEFT HIS ' black wife destitute / He Rolled with the Biggest of the big boys and made good money / But he didn't learn from them HOW TO KEEP IT / He let his White Wives take him to the cleaners and wasted his money / then when he got Old& Broke he marries a black woman and leave her nothing ! / it's a Damn shame and a racial embarrassment !
I adore this song, it reminds me of my uncle who I lost 4 months ago, I don't think this song is about death but it makes me sad for some absurd reason :) but it doesn't stop me from loving it. x
This is so far above the auto-tuned, pre-packaged twinkie fluff that passes for "talent" these days. This is the real thing -singer, dancer, comedian, actor - Sammy is still the bomb!

im thinking that is the cast to the original Oceans 11 (if you didnt already know that). you could just go down the list of actors (google search them) and see if any of them match
This song was composed by Jerry jeff Walker about a white man that he met in prison who was a down and out dancer.
The great Sammy Davis Jr.actually hated the song 'cause his greatest fear was that he would end his life like the Mr. Bojangles of this song. He of course didn't but he did struggle with many of the same demons and that (in my opinion) is why he could own this song the way he did.
Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson also a dancer lived a very different life. He was a different 'Bojangles'.

This song was sung and performed by Sammy Davis Jr. in dedication to Bill "bojangles" Robinson, this clip has pictures of only Sammy Davis Jr., while the Bio is about Mr. Bill "bojangles" Robinson. Was that on purpose? If not Bojangles and Sammy Davis Jr. were not the same person.
u cant just judge frank on his performance in oceans 11 'steerlerJsun' altought sammy was amazing frank was the real leader of the pack and was idolised 4 his layed back manner and cooleness :)
I'm 28 and I was so into Sammy as a kid that I literally CRIED when he died. Y'know Sammy originally didn't want to do this song at all but it truly became his theme song and it's fitting in many ways. There just aren't any entertainers in this world that's on Sammy's level.
i first saw sammy davis perform in 1948,when i was a kid, in portland oregon, & later met/performed with him in nyc, in the 1960'2......nice guy.............jack english.l.a. calif..........
I love Sammy! He was going to marry a white woman and everybody turned against him except Sinatra. He was going to be his best man. Frank was told that it would end his career but was going to do it anyway. Out of love for Frank, Sammy called off the wedding! Back then that was a good move! I respect Mr. Sinatra, A true friend!
Frank asked him to call off the wedding because it clashed with the presidential victory party that Frank was throwing for JFK. He called him Smokey, made racist jokes when Sammy performed. "Smile Smokey they can't see you". Sure he did a lot for Sammy but there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't make him pay for it. Frank was a fantastically talented man no doubt. But he wasn't a very nice guy.
Wow, who let you out of the house? Or *didn't* maybe is the better question... I think you need to go educate yourself before you open your mouth again XP
I didn't say they didn't adore each other, they clearly did, my point was Frank was a very difficult person to get on with - if you disagreed with him in any way, he dropped you like a hot brick. Sammy spoke about this in the press once and Frank blanked him for 6 months. I'm just stating fact - however uncomfortable it makes you feel.
It doesn't make me uncomfortable when you state facts. The point is you should have stated yourself more clearly in the first place. Your comments about 'uncomfortable racist jokes' were completely backwards. Frank detested bigotry and if you or any one else want to say it was more than just fun and games then lets bring up Sammy's jokes about white people.
I don't know who got you into such a sour state of mind about things but you are very unpleasant to talk to. And since you brought it up Dean Martin did indeed love Jerry Lewis. Jerry Lewis loved Dean Martin and still does to this day.
Sorry, I just assumed Shawn Levy would know what he's talking about. You're all right though - I do have better things to do than argue with people who think give and take racism is fun on any level.
lozza i think wt ur were goin on about is aload ov bollock my darlin. did you know tht frank refused to play in some states in america because the autority wouldn't let sammy in to see the show and he probably dd make a joke or two but tht was it a joke not racsism they all enjoyed workin together and tht is a fac jack xx
Yes I did know that. Thanks for your comment, I probably agree with what your saying but I just enjoy playing devils advocate. I know Frank was not an out an out racist, he only did it as a joke or when he was annoyed with Sammy - not sure it makes it okay but that's just conjecture. Again thanks for your comment
Look, Lozza, there are a lot better things you could be doing with your free time than playing the court jester, trying to get a rise out of people by touting your own warped sense of who these men were. Dean loved Jerry, very much, and Jerry loved him back. There's no sense in arguing with that either. If you pay attention to any of their history it's *very* clear that they loved each other deeply. And nothing you might say now could ever change that :P
It's not my 'warped sense' it's Shaun Levy's, the author of 'King of Comedy: The Life and Art of Jerry Lewis' and 'Rat Pack Confidential'. He's America's foremost authority on this era of popular culture and has written in The New York Times, the LA Times and was the senior editor of American Film. Y'see I like to furnish my self with all the points of view before spouting an opinion.
Wouldn't the foremost authority on Jerry Lewis be Jerry Lewis himself? After all, who else knows you better than you? I have read some of Shawn Levy's book, it's right in front of me now actually, and he claims that Jerry "self-mythologized" (16). Jerry never lied. He couldn't bring himself to say or do anything other than what he fully believed in.
Furnishing youself with different viewpoints is fine, but educating yourself *correctly* is key. If you haven't yet read either of Jerry's autobiographies, I highly recommend both of them. 'Dean & Me: A Love Story' is especially wonderful.
Sorry folks, but Lozza is right on this. It did happen that way. Frank could often be a prick. He was magnanimous, yes. But he was vindictive as well. Sammy was the most talented of them all...easily. When Sammy said something akin to this once, Frank outed him. His role in Ocean's 11 was a GARBAGE MAN for goodness sake...
I dont know much about history;-) ... dont know much about Mr Davis Jr, but I love the RAT PACK how I see the things he was one of the first Black Poeple in Entertainment!!!
one of the greatest human beings to walk this earth, he did alot for us brothers,i will always have respect for sammy, all that he went through in the army etc, he's the man yell
Love the way you told a story matching photos with words, especially the minstral shows, dog in heat and jumped so high. A fitting eulogy song for those missing Sammy.
Cosigning on that idea! The man went through such great adversity and trials throughout the course of his life...and still managed to be an iconic singer, dancer, and performer extraordinaire! How ironic that the Hollywood and entertainment scene that initially shunned him should honor him with a tribute on his life. Bring it on!
So far there hasn't been a biographical movie about him, although some events in his life were covered in the 1998 HBO TV movie "The Rat Pack," featuring Ray Liotta as Frank Sinatra, Joe Mantegna as Dean Martin, and Don Cheadle as Sammy.
SAM YOUR THE MAN . grea tribute to one of the greatest entertainers of the century.....R.I.P.LITTLE PAL..P.S. SAY HELLO TO DINO AND FRANK AT THE BAR.SAVE ME A SEAT.
Great to watch. Many photos I've never seen before. I'm just readin a book about the Rat Pack and it was terrible what he had to go through to make it to the top. Terrible racism. I admire him so much and he was brilliant at everything he did. It's a shame they have to get old and die.
The interesting thing about this song,is he hated singing it,it was a tribute song to The great Bojangles who was a tap dancer that had gone broke in his later years, but it was Sammy's biggest fear to go broke as well and sadly he did...But I guess that's life.
OH what a voice :)

nicely done. This guy had an incredibly rich life. Where is the major motion picture telling his story?

Great to watch. Many photos I've never seen before. I'm just readin a book about the Rat Pack and it was terrible what he had to go through to make it to the top. Terrible racism. I admire him so much and he was brilliant at everything he did. It's a shame they have to get old and die.

I'm reading a bio on Sammy, and Sammy was introduced to Bojangles and got a lot of steps from him, so clearly he had great respect for Mr. Robinson.

R.I.P. Sammala...miss you Sammy, but know you'll never suffer lung cancer again. Thanks for this moving post. I'd never heard Sammy died broke...(?)

Every time i hear this song i cry , i've heard it by other performers but they don't have that sammy touch
what a man what a performer

This is why the song was written. Nobody should ever do this song...like retiring a ballplayers number. This was Sammy's and it is awesome.

this is the absolute best version of Mr. Bojangles that i have ever heard. It will never be beaten.

I agree, this version is better than Neil Diamond's, John Denver's, and even the original by Jerry Jeff Walker.

The interesting thing about this song,is he hated singing it,it was a tribute song to The great Bojangles who was a tap dancer that had gone broke in his later years, but it was Sammy's biggest fear to go broke as well and sadly he did...But I guess that's life.
