The same thing happens in magnesium flashbulbs. Heated magnesium reacts violently with oxygen to produce magnesium oxide:
2Mg + O2 -->2MgO

Yes but in this case the flashbulb is filled with pure oxygen.
i hate this experiment. i did it at school and someone dropped the magnesium on my hand. it sucked.
