While I care about the environment, I think it does not need to be a political issue. Complex intelligent life leaves a footprint, and there's not much you can do about it. If humans were to inhabit another world, the environment could be very different and other things could cause problems. The insignificant budget that Astronomy uses wouldn't save the world (or ourselves) if utilized in a more "humanitarian" way.
