I"m currently on a quest to listen to the so called Grammy Award for Album of the Year. I'm doing this because I don't want to be an ignorant tool who rejects a band because he's never heard of them. I'm Canadian and I've never even heard of them until the Grammy's. I hope the next songs are better because I am not convinced. This album has only made it as high as #12. It is a joke. The singer sucks and all the instrumentation is plain as prison walls. The lyrics do not say anything,,,
I'd agree that quite a few Arcade Fire songs are bland, but you need only look to 'The Suburbs' and 'Keep the Car Running' for the real quality. I'm not too keen on this one.
@Althalus1990 I don't think you have to keep copying and pasting your exact words from other videos of theirs to say why you don't like them. I think we get it.
@Althalus1990 If you want to express an informed opinion on them, see them live. Then you'll be able to justify whatever criticisms you have. But I have good money that you won't have any. Live performance is a big part of what AF are about, and they're absolutely mindblowing.
@Althalus1990 As for your current criticisms: height on the charts is hardly relevant to quality, unless you're only into pop anthems and club tunes. The instrumentation is famous for being complex. Again, watch them live, you'll see that they have about twenty different people on stage layering sound and rhythm. Hard to debate about Butler's voice if you just make flat statements without evidence. As for the lyrics - maybe it's subjective. To me they're poetry. Try looking deeper.
@Mohaukseven Most people that buy a whole album have usually listened to most of the songs on the album before buying it. Therefore, most people like the albums they buy. Would that not determine that the most purchased album equal the most enjoyed album? Would the best album not be the most enjoyed album? Thats what I mean about album sales and charts. The Best Album award isn't about live performances, and as for poetry, you are much more open to poetry than I, that I cannot deny and think
@Althalus1990 Don't confuse quality with sales. For an album, being the most purchased and/or enjoyed has nothing to do with it's quality. What's good, is always good, and what's bad, is always bad. As for this album, it's really solid work, both instrumental and lyrical aspects. And they're a dinamic team, like a living body in harmony: "fingers helping eyes helping legs helping ears"
@woodsparrow Most people that buy a whole album have usually listened to most of the songs on the album before buying it. Therefore, most people like the albums they buy. Would that not determine that the most purchased album equal the most enjoyed album? Would the best album not be the most enjoyed album? The Best Album SHOULD be the one that was most enjoyed. What kind of sense does it mean to attribute "quality" to music. Tell me Woodsparrow, how do you measure quality? It is impossible to.
My old hometown was hit by a tornado recently. My grandparents lost their house, the courthouse and downtown were directly hit. And for a whole week after, this song would not leave my head. It perfectly captures how it feels when the cradle of your memories just... disappears.
The last defender of the sprawl said, '' well where do you kids live?'' well sir, if only you knew what the answer is worth....i've been searching every corner of the earth!
It's one of the most tragic ballad's AF has ever wrote. Very under-appreciated and overshadowed by Sprawl II. Understandable how people would skip this one with it crunched between two of the album's most popular songs. /:
