James Arness was a great role model for young kids growing up. Gunsmoke was a wonderful show with great characters that I looked forward to seeing each week. I also believe Mr. Arness was wounded at Anzio during WW2. Thank you for a great TV series and your service to our country Mr. Arness and RIP.
that was funny at the begining of this when Matt Dillon was facing his enemy and was shot. The T.V. program it was the opposite. God Bless you. The World War II generation were some wonderful and complex people. R.I.P
The man was a living legend, so sad to hear he is gone. I grew up watching him with my brothers, we enjoyed Gunsmoke very much. We liked his brother's show as well "Mission Impossible," his brother was Peter Graves- both terrific actors.
I have watched "Gunsmoke" since it came on the air.It was an is one of my favorite shows. I never get tired of watching it. No one else could have played the part of
Marshal Matt Dillon, like James Arness. He was so genuine.
Thank you Mr.Arness for so many years of pleasure. You wil be greatly missed!
@Donaldson733 NEXT TO THE DUKE HE WAS MY FAVORITE WESTERN STAR,HOPEFULLY GUNSMOKE WILL LIVE ON FOREVER IN TV LAND & JAMES ARNESS WITH IT RIP BIG JIM YOU WILL BE MISSED BY ALL
I will repeat the theme: I didn't miss many of these shows when I was growing up. Matt was a hero and role model to me. James Arness was perfect for the role of Matt Dillon. Thanks, James.
As a 36 year old black male,I've been ridculed because I love westerns. My grandmother being a mississippi born native american got me into watching gunsmoke as a kid.Gunsmoke was always the leader of the pack followed by cheyenne, have gun will travel and cimarron strip. As a person that watches old shows and movies,I found this show to be a quailty program that told a story.Perhaps thats why it lasted so long.Rest in peace, Mr. Arness.
Heaven has gained a great human being! Very few actors come across as sincere or truly anywhere near like the heroic screen characters they played. But Arness came across as the real deal - perhaps only Jimmy Stewart and a few others had this quality. Really, his Matt Dylan character is something from another time and place, when the character was of high moral character, self-effacing, a realist, a person of character - and most of us took him seriously and loved what he represented. Miss him!
@philipatoz The Jimmy Stewart comparison is dead on. I'd add Gregory Peck to that list as well. Real men of character and substance depicting strength and courage - compared to the scrawny spiky-haired gay freaks today who spend their on and off air time emulating females. It would be nice to see a real male show up on Television again.
A wonderful man...I had the opertunity to direct him in a film for the US Marshal Service back in 1986. He was the nicest, kindest, most generous celebrity I ever worked with. A real professional, a down to earth guy. When he put on that Custume, he was Matt Dillion...That week with him was one of the most enjoyable of my career.
Monday nights...Gunsmoke, the Lucy Show, and Dick Van Dyke. What a lineup. Gunsmoke led the way and sparked my imagination. Loved Matt and Kitty...he was a fool not to marry that woman!
You're the best James! The best western series on tv ever! 20 years straight, then James continued to play Matt Dillon in movies up to 1992, along with other series tv he did.
