@ravenshield56 It's just my personal preference. I say, it doesn't really matter what finger you hit the note with because it sounds the same either way! If it's more complicated and I have to, then I use one finger per fret as you mentioned.
@RedSGShredder ahh :) my teachers are telling me to do figner per fret, but with 5 years self-taught, you pick up bad habits, and i think its easier your way
@ravenshield56 That's why I never got lessons. I don't believe in 'picking up bad habits' or anything like that. Everyone plays guitar differently. It's not a science, it is an art. If it was a science (like math, engineering) then yes, it has to be exact and there is only one way to do it. But if it is an art (cooking, guitar, painting) then in my opinion, you should do it the way that feels right to you. It's just my opinion and I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me.
@RedSGShredder Thats a great theory :) i kinda think the same, but the teachers are kinda like if you dont do it this way you will fail at it kinda thing ahah
You should be proud of this vid. You are one of the very, very few that cuts the bs, and gives great advice. Thanks for letting players know that guitar playing is NOT rock band!
Ok... just an opinion... your guitar need some less gain and more bass/mids. it sounds fuzzy and harsh. but otherwise you are totally right about warmup and tabs.
i like using the tabs, it gives me a basic understanding of the song. then i listen to the song and play the tab and figure out whats wrong and all that
btw, heres a tip for soloing as well, USE THE NECK PICKUP(S)!!! It gives you more of that butterish like feel/sound. it has that nice smooth sound to it, and with the bridge or body pickup, it's usually for more of the heavy open muting or like the verse and chorus.
no you don't, what i've done for soloing, is whatever your playing under the solo, figure out what key it is. what i usually do is find 2-3 scales that i'd like to use over it, play around with the notes in different positions (example dorian whole step or half step down on the neck dont care about the tuning). it's just what i've always done. i think it's pretty much what he's talking about lmfao (his reply)
Hey Dude, iv'e watched all your videos & I'm loving them so much. I should call myself your 'biggest fan' hah, but who knows. I need tips on my guitar fingering. Especially on the higher frets from 12 onwards. I can't get my fingering right and my fingers wear out as i shred. Any suggestions?
when you say A Minor do you mean A Natural Minor? oh and to the guy that says Satriani uses that chromatic scale to warm-up. um, NO, he does a chord shape that looks chromatic to warm-up. it's all four fingers fretting 4 different strings, just thought i'd add that in.
Yes to your first question. Anyway, I've seen the video and I know what chord you are talking about. The point is the same. I say, don't practice something that is useless in the context of a real song. Play real chords and real scales instead.
hi good day....killrbuckeye introduces you how to learn lead pattern's.....i call him my MASTER...can i call you my MASTER too? if its just ok to you.....
For the talking part, be sure to read on my website why I talk so much. But that's a good point about it all being common sense. Before I started these lessons I was just going to make a few advanced lessons and skip all the other stuff. But you'd be surprised how many people asked me "common sense" types of questions in emails and stuff, so I decided to teach more stuff, even stuff that may seem like common sense to me and you. Because to others it might not be as obvious.
What should I do if I get a lot of noise when picking fast? It sounds like my pick is just sliding on the strings, but I don't know how to change it so that it stops the "scratching-sliding" sound on the string, and actually has the note prevalent. This is a problem when I'm playing solos like Aces High or w/e.
Sure man I know what you are talking about. I actually like that type of sound so I sometimes do it intentionally. Anyway if you want to eliminate it try angling your pick differently.
I get that sound too. RedSGShredder is right, try angling your pick differently. OR, you could use flimsy picks, which I like to do because there is less string resistance.
I tried what he said, and it worked really well! Thanks! I don't like using flimsy picks however, cause that messes with accuracy and tone. I prefer the heavier tone of my 1.14 mm picks.
So those notes are E D C, and D C B respectively, which are all notes in the A minor scale, which is A B C D E F G. Technically those notes are in other scales as well, but it's just an example. Also, it's technically G minor because I tuned down a whole step, but per my disclaimer, I still refer to all the notes as if I was in standard tuning.
about the warm up thing you said...my sentements exactly...why in the hell do meaning less scales when you can just warm up by playing songs. i mean, im sure before a show, bands dont just do scales the whole time, they actually have to warm up for their songs.
Well dude, I'm a judging a second guitar contest, and I have been very busy with writing material for my own album, and I am also pretty busy with other life shit. So unfortunately I probably won't be able to make a video for another few weeks. I want to finish up the lessons, and then I will finish up my album. Sorry for keeping you waiting!
Its simply easier to build strength and flexibility in the left hand when u dont need to concentrate on which interval u have to play next.
Judging by your videos your right hand technique is by far superior to your left hand, maybe u could use some practice with these "warm up" excersizes yourself :-)
True, it is a means to an end. Well if it works for you, then go ahead and do it. It doesn't work for me and you can read about why I wouldn't ever do those in my previous comments. All I'm saying is that you should train for what you will use, not what you won't use. If you play a lot of chromatic scales in your soloing, then I'd say that's an appropriate thing to practice. But for me personally, I don't just play chromatic scales.
I totally agree with playing songs to warm up, I like playing Laid To Rest to warm up. Hell of a work out with your right hand and also great left hand work.
duhhh...doing those excercises you say dont have a point make the blood in your fingers flow...making it "warm up" and maybe YOU should learn how to read tabs cuz youre tabbing is all wrong.
Well you could sit around and play scales, or you could play solos and you'd get the same result, which is warming up. But playing real solos is more worthwhile in my opinion. I actually can read tabs. I just checked my tabs and they looked fine to me. What part are you saying is incorrect?
joe satriani uses that chromatic scale to warm up, your saying like 'dont use it , use songs' .... tell joe satriani that and see what he says? he would laugh, its commonly used by players like him to warm up and get all fingers active.
your basically telling people to play smoke on water to warm up... BULLSHIT
If you would have bothered to watch more than the first 1:45 of the video, you would've heard that he says: "It works for some people, if it works for you, go ahead and do it."
Not everybody warms up the exact same way, fucking hell.....
Well I wouldn't choose that song to warm up with because it's simple. But I would rather play Yngwie's Trilogy solo or his Rising Force solo or a Children Of Bodom solo or something rather than a scale. So I didn't mean a specific song, I just meant playing something real and musical rather than just a technical exercise. And yes I would tell that to Joe Satriani. I'm not intimidated by anyone.
also i doudt that joe satriani would laugh in fact to be honest im sure he wouldnt really give 2 shits lmao but i kinda do both to answer the question

soloing isnt all that hard..what i do is learn other's solos and use that knowledge to play my own improv solo..also even if you think it'll sound bad do it and learn from it and figure out the correct note
Sure man, I just play songs and learn new solos and scales. Don't just learn the songs and play them though. Analyze them and examine what notes you are playing and question why the writer of the solo decided to use those notes.
Hey, I love your lessons, but as for improvising, though he isn't a metal player, or a traditional shredder, there is no one better at improvising than Stevie Ray Vaughan.
haha how bout them chargers getting their revenge on the broncos.. im glad they won after getting screwed by ed hochuli in thier first meeting.. haha anyway always love you videos and you should totally make a DVD for beginers your a really good teacher with good advices!!
haha yea it was., but yeah i just started playing guitar a couple months ago and i checked out your vids and i really learned alot so keep up the good work and i will definatly check out your upcoming videos

soloing isnt all that hard..what i do is learn other's solos and use that knowledge to play my own improv solo..also even if you think it'll sound bad do it and learn from it and figure out the correct note
tedious but worth it
srry for spelling errors...im failing english xD

What Technique did you use to learn the notes on the fretboard? I'm new with guitar and I'm having trouble learning them. Help!
Zawone80s 3 years ago
Sure man, I just play songs and learn new solos and scales. Don't just learn the songs and play them though. Analyze them and examine what notes you are playing and question why the writer of the solo decided to use those notes.
RedSGShredder 3 years ago
Thank you! I've been trying to improvise but it sounds like shit cause I keep hitting the wrong notes:) And by the way, Awesome lesson!

zeldadevideos 3 years ago
well lead does solo and really sticks on there
and rythem is just kinda in the backround paying the main riff...that u could a little bit
cauzer1595 3 years ago
Lead = (Most of the time) Fast playing, knowledge of scales, patterns and modes, plays solos and melodies.
Rhythm = (Most of the time) Chord playing, skills in chord changes, knowledge of chords, harmonizing with solo guitarist.

Thanks man. I usually use downstrokes except for the pull off, but you can use whatever picking technique you want.

Hey, I love your lessons, but as for improvising, though he isn't a metal player, or a traditional shredder, there is no one better at improvising than Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Just thought I'd add that :P

Professionals aren't always the best teachers though. As for criticizing professionals, it's we all criticize things we don't have professional knowledge about, like sports, politics, and other stuff, so I don't see a problem with that.
