  • pull-ons and hammer-offs.... LOL.

    great lesson, man.

  • why dont you use a finger per fret? i noticed on the pattern at 5:30 that your not using your 4th finger for that 4th fret in the pattern?

  • @ravenshield56 It's just my personal preference. I say, it doesn't really matter what finger you hit the note with because it sounds the same either way! If it's more complicated and I have to, then I use one finger per fret as you mentioned.

  • @RedSGShredder ahh :) my teachers are telling me to do figner per fret, but with 5 years self-taught, you pick up bad habits, and i think its easier your way

  • @ravenshield56 That's why I never got lessons. I don't believe in 'picking up bad habits' or anything like that. Everyone plays guitar differently. It's not a science, it is an art. If it was a science (like math, engineering) then yes, it has to be exact and there is only one way to do it. But if it is an art (cooking, guitar, painting) then in my opinion, you should do it the way that feels right to you. It's just my opinion and I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me.

  • @RedSGShredder Thats a great theory :) i kinda think the same, but the teachers are kinda like if you dont do it this way you will fail at it kinda thing ahah

  • @ravenshield56 those teachers sound like assholes

  • @DeadlyDictator they are tbh... xD

  • You should be proud of this vid. You are one of the very, very few that cuts the bs, and gives great advice. Thanks for letting players know that guitar playing is NOT rock band!

  • Dude change ur pickup to neck pickup when playin high notes plzz

  • Ok... just an opinion... your guitar need some less gain and more bass/mids. it sounds fuzzy and harsh. but otherwise you are totally right about warmup and tabs.

  • you talk too much. more on playing pls.

  • dude your inlays they kinda look like shark tooth inlays what are they

  • @ALKAAFE Sharktooth inlays, just cos they are silver and grey mix they are harder to make out (see)

  • Yes, they are shark tooth. Well I think they are. There are two "teeth" if you will.

  • boo chargers! :P great vid thanks alot!

  • i like using the tabs, it gives me a basic understanding of the song. then i listen to the song and play the tab and figure out whats wrong and all that

  • btw, heres a tip for soloing as well, USE THE NECK PICKUP(S)!!! It gives you more of that butterish like feel/sound. it has that nice smooth sound to it, and with the bridge or body pickup, it's usually for more of the heavy open muting or like the verse and chorus.

  • mmmm. butter..........

  • im kinda confused. When doing solos does ur notes have to be the same as the chords or can u mix it up?

  • You technically can mix notes around but if you want to play in the proper scales, then you shouldn't.

  • ok thanks.

  • no you don't, what i've done for soloing, is whatever your playing under the solo, figure out what key it is. what i usually do is find 2-3 scales that i'd like to use over it, play around with the notes in different positions (example dorian whole step or half step down on the neck dont care about the tuning). it's just what i've always done. i think it's pretty much what he's talking about lmfao (his reply)

  • Hey Dude, iv'e watched all your videos & I'm loving them so much. I should call myself your 'biggest fan' hah, but who knows. I need tips on my guitar fingering. Especially on the higher frets from 12 onwards. I can't get my fingering right and my fingers wear out as i shred. Any suggestions?

    Thanks (:

  • Thanks for the nice words dude. Sure it sounds like you just need to practice a little more and build up strength and everything will be fine.

  • hey what r sum "sorta easy" heavy metal songs with nice solos

  • Lamb of God's songs have pretty simple, awesome sounding lead parts. Solo's a little intermediate, just play em slow until you master them.

  • Master of Puppets - Metallica

    The first solo before kirks.

  • Also, the rythm part after the intro helps out a lot with alternate picking. that is, unless you want to do strictly downstrums.

  • you couldnt be a chargers fan its totally not obvious

  • how do u tune down an ibanez like that cuz i cant do that to mine and mine just gets out of wack

  • You'd have to adjust the springs in the back if you make any big tuning changes. Check out some videos on YouTube on how to do it.

  • Thicker strings too man! I use .10 - .52

  • For warming up I alway play rhythm because I can't play solos and I don't know any pentatonic. But I love Kirk Hammett and Zakk Wylde.

  • Do you teach lessons at a gallery or anything? I'd pay for them, if I needed them :P.

  • No man, the only lessons I give are here on YouTube.

  • awesome lesson!

  • yea i actually like to warm up with a scale and it helps me with technique. i actually really like this guys lessons.

  • when you say A Minor do you mean A Natural Minor? oh and to the guy that says Satriani uses that chromatic scale to warm-up. um, NO, he does a chord shape that looks chromatic to warm-up. it's all four fingers fretting 4 different strings, just thought i'd add that in.

  • Yes to your first question. Anyway, I've seen the video and I know what chord you are talking about. The point is the same. I say, don't practice something that is useless in the context of a real song. Play real chords and real scales instead.

  • He's great too but Malmsteen is just inhuman dude!

  • duuuude yngwie is insane. but he isent the best at improv.

  • aaaaaaaalllllllllll the time tabs are wrong lol i like ur videos i'm gunna watch the rest of your vidoes

  • hi good day....killrbuckeye introduces you how to learn lead pattern's.....i call him my MASTER...can i call you my MASTER too? if its just ok to you.....

  • ik moet al die zever nie horen speel gewoon iets

  • Can i use 9 gauge strings down a whole step???

  • Sure you can. The only thing is that they might be a little loose. But it's all up to you and what you like.

  • Dude. Your god at guitar. You need to become a partner of youtube.

  • you r great bro dont listend do those ungreatful ass holes keep it up Shredder

  • For the talking part, be sure to read on my website why I talk so much. But that's a good point about it all being common sense. Before I started these lessons I was just going to make a few advanced lessons and skip all the other stuff. But you'd be surprised how many people asked me "common sense" types of questions in emails and stuff, so I decided to teach more stuff, even stuff that may seem like common sense to me and you. Because to others it might not be as obvious.

  • What should I do if I get a lot of noise when picking fast? It sounds like my pick is just sliding on the strings, but I don't know how to change it so that it stops the "scratching-sliding" sound on the string, and actually has the note prevalent. This is a problem when I'm playing solos like Aces High or w/e.

  • Sure man I know what you are talking about. I actually like that type of sound so I sometimes do it intentionally. Anyway if you want to eliminate it try angling your pick differently.

  • I get that sound too. RedSGShredder is right, try angling your pick differently. OR, you could use flimsy picks, which I like to do because there is less string resistance.

  • I tried what he said, and it worked really well! Thanks! I don't like using flimsy picks however, cause that messes with accuracy and tone. I prefer the heavier tone of my 1.14 mm picks.

  • hey honestly a like that Gibson Robo guitar..

hmmm... i wish i could have that kind of guitar..

and hey thanks for the tips and the teaching pattern also.. nice..

  • I think Marty Friedman was an amazing improviser. Such melodicism in it as well :D Great lesson!

  • alexi laiho! :D yeya

  • LOL at 1:00

    GH NERDS...OWNED!!

    haha i loved that!!!

  • thanks

  • So those notes are E D C, and D C B respectively, which are all notes in the A minor scale, which is A B C D E F G. Technically those notes are in other scales as well, but it's just an example. Also, it's technically G minor because I tuned down a whole step, but per my disclaimer, I still refer to all the notes as if I was in standard tuning.

  • what guage string do you use?

  • I use D'Addario 11's. You can read about all of my stuff on my channel page.

  • awesome bro! u da man!

  • about the warm up thing you said...my sentements exactly...why in the hell do meaning less scales when you can just warm up by playing songs. i mean, im sure before a show, bands dont just do scales the whole time, they actually have to warm up for their songs.

  • good lesson, could I have the tabs for 5:57 please?

  • Check out ultimate guitar.

  • thats a really nice guitar maan and you rock

  • Dude did you make it a floating trem

  • I didn't have to make it into anything. It came with one.

  • dude you have the best advice

  • whats taking so long with the next video

  • Well dude, I'm a judging a second guitar contest, and I have been very busy with writing material for my own album, and I am also pretty busy with other life shit. So unfortunately I probably won't be able to make a video for another few weeks. I want to finish up the lessons, and then I will finish up my album. Sorry for keeping you waiting!

  • lol i dont like waiting. But as the faithful fan i am wait i must!

  • a second contest? im actually kind of excited for that

  • It's already over though, heh.

  • damn man, your own album, i gotta get that, you are an awesome guitarist, and i love your lessons.

  • practicing chromatics is a means to an end.

Its simply easier to build strength and flexibility in the left hand when u dont need to concentrate on which interval u have to play next.

Judging by your videos your right hand technique is by far superior to your left hand, maybe u could use some practice with these "warm up" excersizes yourself :-)

  • True, it is a means to an end. Well if it works for you, then go ahead and do it. It doesn't work for me and you can read about why I wouldn't ever do those in my previous comments. All I'm saying is that you should train for what you will use, not what you won't use. If you play a lot of chromatic scales in your soloing, then I'd say that's an appropriate thing to practice. But for me personally, I don't just play chromatic scales.

  • I totally agree with playing songs to warm up, I like playing Laid To Rest to warm up. Hell of a work out with your right hand and also great left hand work.

  • Is than an Ibanez GRG? Anyway, lead guitar is the best, good video

  • Thanks, it's an RG42DX.

  • duhhh...doing those excercises you say dont have a point make the blood in your fingers flow...making it "warm up" and maybe YOU should learn how to read tabs cuz youre tabbing is all wrong.

  • Well you could sit around and play scales, or you could play solos and you'd get the same result, which is warming up. But playing real solos is more worthwhile in my opinion. I actually can read tabs. I just checked my tabs and they looked fine to me. What part are you saying is incorrect?

  • Dude you need to go to hell for Dissin Vafa.

  • joe satriani uses that chromatic scale to warm up, your saying like 'dont use it , use songs' .... tell joe satriani that and see what he says? he would laugh, its commonly used by players like him to warm up and get all fingers active.

your basically telling people to play smoke on water to warm up... BULLSHIT

  • If you would have bothered to watch more than the first 1:45 of the video, you would've heard that he says: "It works for some people, if it works for you, go ahead and do it."

Not everybody warms up the exact same way, fucking hell.....

  • Well I wouldn't choose that song to warm up with because it's simple. But I would rather play Yngwie's Trilogy solo or his Rising Force solo or a Children Of Bodom solo or something rather than a scale. So I didn't mean a specific song, I just meant playing something real and musical rather than just a technical exercise. And yes I would tell that to Joe Satriani. I'm not intimidated by anyone.

  • also i doudt that joe satriani would laugh in fact to be honest im sure he wouldnt really give 2 shits lmao but i kinda do both to answer the question

  • I think he is refering to running up and down the chromatic scale in an actual solo.....which would not song great due to the accidentals.....

  • pull offs and hammer offs xD

  • why dont you ever use your strat?

  • I do use it but not for playing metal except for Yngwie and other fun stuff. I am going to use it in a lesson video though.

  • cool im looking forward to see you jam the strat.

  • Yall need to stop arguing like little bitches its really annoying

  • Lol you need to be called White Ibanez Shredder with a Red SG as well

  • you and KillrBuckeye should start a band.

  • dude ur an idiot. if you watch any of his other videos you'll understand.

  • Seth3556r = a youtard that doesn't know shit and types before he speaks.

  • Wow, you really told me off, you must really be a hustler ay bitch?

  • LOL

    "dont text me"

    bahahahahahaha

  • If anything, we should be mad that he is a chargers fan >:(

  • Yeah, Chargers suck ass.

  • Haha

  • Ok OK

I wanna start playing lead guitar. And im getting really lost in this video :(

I think I'll have to watch it through again and practice practice practice

  • Just learn the minor pentatonic scale (google it) and then practice the shit of it then when you're comfortable start adding bends and vibrato and stuff.

  • I hope to one day learn the intricacies of a chromatic scale.

  • when u r playing the solo between 5:57 and 6:03 were u picking every note or were u using some hammer-ons and pull-offs?

  • I picked every note. Playing with pull ons and hammer offs would be a good legato exercise though.

  • You have the best video lessons. I love em. Thanks man keep it up.

  • ty 5*

  • Nice vid dude ^^

  • i'm surprised ppl didnt give you shit for mentioning yngwie

    5 stars as always!

  • Nicely done Vafa! Improvising is the only way I solo.

  • i'm all self taught- dont know notes and stuff- and that whole tone and semi tone stuff you talked about i learned that on my own :P- as long as u just experiment with your guitar i really think you're good-alot of self taught artists out there but it wouldn't hurt to learn scales and stuff-but i lyk to play what ever just sounds damn good to my ears regargless of what scalles or notes or whatever it follows

  • Good video...

  • best lessons and guitar player on youtube right here : ]

  • Great Video!

  • thank you man i learned a lot

but later on can u post a vid on legato

  • Thanks dude. I am not planning on a legato video though. It's just something you do and learn for yourself, I don't think an entire lesson needs to be made about it.

  • alright thanks man

  • Dude you are a great teacher, could you make a video explaining how to do solo harmonies like Iron Maiden or Thin Lizzy .

  • Thanks! I already have done a video on harmonizing.

  • Sweet video, Vafa! All your lessons has made me understand some bits more!

now i guess i have to learn scales, witch i suck at hehe

  • I'm so stupid. I know nothing about playing lead. I kill on rhythm guitar, but lead is calculus to me - all those keys and shit, I just don't get it. Go ahead, people, laugh at me. : (((

  • No, no-one's going to laugh at you.

Learn a bit of piano. I played piano for around 10 years before I took up guitar. Believe me, playing piano has helped my understanding of guitar.

  • no dude no1 will laugh at you =]

in my side project the rythym guitarist is really good at rythm but sucks at leads xD

but he also knows some complicated ryhthms from playing Hendrix and other older bands/guitarist

soloing isnt all that hard..what i do is learn other's solos and use that knowledge to play my own improv solo..also even if you think it'll sound bad do it and learn from it and figure out the correct note

    tedious but worth it

srry for spelling errors...im failing english xD

  • lol man thats how i felt through my first three years of playing....i could learn rhythms by ear,and a video like this can really help....

  • Yeah there is some chromatic patterns in Black Widow, Triple Corpse Hammerblow, Hellhounds on My Trail, etc.

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

  • CHARGERS!

  • did you swap pick ups? they look like EMGs

  • No, they are still the stock pickups.

  • Awesome!

    Happy New Year Vafa!

Tell me news from you :P

    - Raphael ; HomeMadeGuitarist

  • happy new year guys! and red SG S' :P gredat vuideo ill try it tomorow though hahah

  • WHOOOO whiteRGshredder xD. good vid :]

  • yngwie malmsteen ftw

  • What Technique did you use to learn the notes on the fretboard? I'm new with guitar and I'm having trouble learning them. Help!

  • Sure man, I just play songs and learn new solos and scales. Don't just learn the songs and play them though. Analyze them and examine what notes you are playing and question why the writer of the solo decided to use those notes.

  • Thank you! I've been trying to improvise but it sounds like shit cause I keep hitting the wrong notes:) And by the way, Awesome lesson!

  • Did the SG get retired? Good lesson btw

  • Hah no way dude. I'm still on a honeymoon with this one though, heheh.

  • OO DUUUUUUUUUUUUDDE!!! Finally! On New years ;D!!! GReat lessons like all the others! Cant wait to learn from your future lessons!

    Keep on rockking!

  • yeah when i look at a tab i just learn the notes no bending or vibrato i just add when i listen to the song

  • hey abybody please tell me what the difference between rythm guitar and lead guitar i have no clue on the difference

  • well lead does solo and really sticks on there

and rythem is just kinda in the backround paying the main riff...that u could a little bit

  • Lead = (Most of the time) Fast playing, knowledge of scales, patterns and modes, plays solos and melodies.

Rhythm = (Most of the time) Chord playing, skills in chord changes, knowledge of chords, harmonizing with solo guitarist.

  • thank you a lot than this is my stuff i dont like usong chords that much i use them but no that often and i want to make solo then this is my stuff

    thankz

  • Real good lesson

  • 5*.

    Happy new year my friend.

    Robin :o)

  • Happy Birthday =)

  • hey this video came out on my birthday! :D

    Awesome vid (y)

  • Happy birthday dude.

  • What Bodom song is that XD i rember the sound but not hte name :P

  • Wrath Within ;)

  • Do You use alternative picking in 8.23 ?

    great lessons btw

  • Thanks man. I usually use downstrokes except for the pull off, but you can use whatever picking technique you want.

  • Once again an awesome lesson!!!!!!

  • Hey, I love your lessons, but as for improvising, though he isn't a metal player, or a traditional shredder, there is no one better at improvising than Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Just thought I'd add that :P

  • haha how bout them chargers getting their revenge on the broncos.. im glad they won after getting screwed by ed hochuli in thier first meeting.. haha anyway always love you videos and you should totally make a DVD for beginers your a really good teacher with good advices!!

  • Thanks man, I'm glad you like my lessons. For sure dude, that game was so satisfying!

  • haha yea it was., but yeah i just started playing guitar a couple months ago and i checked out your vids and i really learned alot so keep up the good work and i will definatly check out your upcoming videos

  • great vid man 5/5 awsome stuff!! \m/

  • That's pretty cool. I'm getting my first guitar tomorrow :) It's an Ibanez AGS73B! :) So Stoked!

  • A great video, as always.

  • so what if he isnt professional? Its his own opinion dumbass

  • he just shares hes opinion you twat...

  • and im sharing mine

  • Professionals aren't always the best teachers though. As for criticizing professionals, it's we all criticize things we don't have professional knowledge about, like sports, politics, and other stuff, so I don't see a problem with that.
