From my experience of shrooms (I had 3 trips in 4 days, which was my first and last time taking them back in 2010), I would say yeah, your thought process is completely different and how you analyse everything is on a level beyond what you can do sober. I've actually been curious to try out a low dose of magic mushrooms, but I don't know where to get them, since I live in a small rural area, and I have no "contacts". Woah, the patients were prepped 6-9 months? That's an incredibly ridiculous long time. Overkill. Then again, they were probably trying to get good data on what their lives were prior to the trip.
Also, there were definitely controlled studies done in the 40's, 50's and 60's. I've read and watched documentaries of studies done.

Another similar study has been conducted with DMT. The scientist wrote a book called DMT: The Spirit Molecule, a fascinating read. He also started out with the aim of using hallucinogenic substances for clinical treatment purposes. The trip journals/experiences in the book are worth it alone, especially for the bizarre similarities across the patients (like a significant portion describing contact with alien beings), but the conclusions the author draws are compelling as well. I absolutely agree that they produce an effect that is spiritual in nature.

I've actually been curious to try out a low dose of magic mushrooms, but I don't know where to get them, since I live in a small rural area, and I have no "contacts". Plus, I would feel pretty awkward asking around for such a thing. Prohibition makes this all so awkward, and for no reason whatsoever.
I'm really annoyed with the situation. I'm trying to explore something, in a safe and informed manner, but they won't let me. It makes me distrust the government heavily.
