The Union Way: If you can't intelligently debate the issue then call them names.
The reason this debate is so vile is because no public worker has a rational basis for demanding higher wages when the State Treasury is bust. But go ahead and try to get it repealed via ballot. That's your right. But the consequences will be layoffs if you succeed. So either way the budget will be balanced. Think first is all I ask.
@danielsullivandba They don't understand that. Lazy communists just want big daddy government to take care of them, and if anyone threatens to take that away..."OMG! THE NAZIS!!! RACIST TEA BAGGERS! OH MY GOOOOOOOOOD!!".
Wow. This is what cracks me up about unionists. A bunch of socialists that call their government a democracy. They don't even realize (or won't admit) that they are part of the problem now. Just cracks me up.
Actually I get paid comparable to what other people across the country get paid for the type of work I do. My company was approached by a union several years ago and I had made up my mind that if we went union, I was going to quit my job of 35 years because I didn't want my union dues going to pay the salaries of fat cat union bosses who used my money to support politicians and issues that I found offensive.
Tea partiers aren't really fascists. They're essentially pig ignorant couch potatoes who believe whatever the idiot box tells them.
This is Darwinian, though. We know what the dependence on the benevolence of corporate America gets us. So if those right-wing idiots continue to clamor for mass impoverishment, poor education, and the continued stupification of America, that's what they'll pass on to their kids.
And the U.S. can totter off deluding itself that it's still a world power.

@LauseMarkA ill leave your adolescent comments alone. as for your allegations that corporate america/right wing "idiots" are causing poverty, poor education and "stupification of america" that's fundamentally flawed since by and large most public educators (who arguably have a role in it in a more direct way than corporations) are mostly liberal. that's established. perhaps their socialistic method isn't working. perhaps the union protection of bad teachers is causing these results.
This affects me too, to the tune of several thousand dollars per year. However, we, Ohioans, simply can't keep spending what we don't have. After all, we are not the federal govt.....we can't just keep printing money and accumulating debt. It seems that those of you opposed would prefer to see more people unemployed vs. everyone kicking in a little. And, if your answer is to tax the wealthy and corps. more than they already are, watch them leave Ohio and take the jobs with them.
Some do pay zero. They employ thousands who do pay taxes. They provide financial support to communities. Many of the people who work for the corps. that you hate climb the ladder. They are able to earn a nice living and give their children opportunities they did not have. So, are you admiting that you would like to tax the corporations until they pick up and leave? @toyotabedzrock corporations that pay zero taxes? really. show me a publicly traded corporation that pays zero taxes. i will check up on their financial documents to make sure you aren't lying. take Exxon for an example. they paid in FY2009 15.1 BILLION in income tax as shown on their Income statement. Their Net Income for the same period was 19 BILLION. seems like they didn't get the tax break you're alleging. they paid 42.8% tax on their EBIT. So who is getting these breaks?

@cornraker Wait. You're seriously too dumb to know what a twit is? Seriously? The word's been in common usage here on Earth in English-speaking countries for a while now. Maybe you can do a TIL. TWIT:
–noun
an insignificant or bothersome person.
Origin:
1920–25; perhaps orig. noun derivative of twit 1 , i.e., “one who twits others,” but altered in sense by association with expressive words with tw- ( twaddle, twat, twerp, etc.) and by rhyme with nitwit
google "distribution of us wealth," click on "images," look at the pie charts and see for yourself why the people sticking up for the unions are in the right deserve to be respected.
@counterfeitholiday distribution of wealth? wow another socialist who can't work on his/her own merit. spread the wealth around because it's unevenly distributed? wow. ok so we know who the first volunteer will be to take the wage cut to bring you down to an even level so everyone can have some of your money. you do understand that you won't make your same union salary with a wage redistribution don't you?
@GriperNews working class hero? a working class hero isn't someone who goes stomping around the capitol rotunda crying about unfair wages like a six year old throwing a hissy fit. grow up and EARN your salary through MERIT and RESULTS.
@GriperNews it has nothing to do with pristine ears. grow up. it's about the contradictory liberal attacks on tea parties as being "racist, vile and radical" when they aren't that group. the unions are. the tea partiers at this event and every other one i have been to have been the most polite and adult. it's a classic case of the pot calling it's handle black. i dont care that he uses foul language he has that right. it's just a clear illustration of who is really the bully/radical.
@yzerman19wingnut Oh yes, a real bully. You know what? Turns out that when you reach into someone's pants and start taking money out of their wallet, they get really mad. Who knew?
@GriperNews no one is reaching into anyone's pocketbook and taking money. both wisconsin and ohio have said they will honor current contracts as required by law. this is about future contract negotiations. if something isnt settled with these bills soon then layoffs will be unavoidable. THAT would be reaching into people's pockets. either get some "skin in the game" and concede some things like the private sector already has or topple the whole state. either way it's a matter of certainty.
@guinnessman1970 a republic is a form of government. a democracy is a way of governing. they are not the same thing you fucking neanderthal half wit.
@counterfeitholiday the United States is a Full Presidential Republic that elects it's leaders through representative democracy. Look it up on wikipedia and quit arguing about it y'all. A full presidential republic is one in which the President is separate from the legislature and cannot dismiss it. To just call this country a democracy is to mislead that we are a direct democracy in which the people vote on everything without a rep in power to make the call for us. If that can't settle it..
the system didn't start breaking under Bush until in 2007 the democrats took over the legislature and bush did his part with the bailouts but ever since 2007 the spending has skyrocketed, the jobs have evaporated and the debt has gone wild. obama+congress since 2009 has spent more than every single admin from washington through reagan combined. so please spare me the it's bush's fault alone nonsense. im not that inept. obama owns this economy so blame him for not turning it around.
The system has been breaking for over a decade with George W Bush spending the budget surplus and that was before he declared a very expensive war. This is NOT about healthcare. This is about taking away people's rights. Now, it's the public workers rights to organize and have collective bargaining. Next it will be everyone else. No one will be safe. Like having 2 days off a week? Thank the unions. Like having a 40 hour workweek? Thank the unions. Without them we'd all still be in the dark ages.
The Tea Party is -- knowingly or not -- a bunch of corporate whores sucking up to the people who have run this country into the ground. Ditto heads all who don't know how to think for themselves.
@figmentzenguitar the people who have spent all the money are the democrats who were in power until January. Now the Democrats are mad they can't keep spending with the maxed out credit card. It has nothing to do with corporate as you call us "whores". Do you have a job? Do you work for a company? If so you rely on that company to remain profitable. If you work for a government then you still rely on the corporations to remain profitable. No corporation = no taxes = no jobs=everyone fired
"Tea Party rallies around Scott Walker." What? Like the original Tea Party rallied around the British Crown? Get serious, you bunch of charlatans. You misrepresent yourselves and American history. In a word, you are liars. You would be laughable if the possibilities weren't so frightening. No one took Hitler's lie seriously in the beginnig when he and his Brown Shirts attacked German trade unionists. I guess you people know the culmination of that lie.
NO budget should be balanced on the backs of the workers while businesses and the wealthy slip through tax loopholes. All of you who are slandering this video are obviously not union, nor are you state workers, or you'd understand. we state workers do NOT make what the Republicans say we are. Some of us are below the national poverty levels. If you are a worker, union or not, you should all be mad like my Teamster friend because after they get done with the unions, they are coming after you.
No one is slipping thru the tax loopholes, except the pseudo business/gov't institutions like GM & GE.
Our healthcare premiums went up 33% this year due to ObamaCare. Real unemployment is at 20% and OHIO has not paid unemployment benefits all of last YEAR. The state is broke. The fed gov't paid by borrowing money from foreign countries and printing it. What do you suggest we do???
@joshlbetts Good post. I agree that Obamacare has put a heavy burden on the states. It has to go if Ohio has any prayer of going forward without every employee of every type feeling the pain. Nonunion as well as Union workers of every type are getting pushed through the ringers. And yes some corporations get exemptions from Obamacare. I think that instead of acting like this guy in this video why don't we the people get together Union and non alike to repeal the job killing agendas?
@unionmomx4 the problem with going after the businesses as unions often do: who provides the jobs then? the businesses simply go somewhere else (ie GA that has right to work statutes). Ohio must become competitive. Blindly forcing higher wages and benefits only will in the end force businesses out. So instead of complaining about your own salary lets talk about how this can be sustainable in Ohio. It cannot. The budget deficit this year is over 8B. where should they cut it if not union?
NO state employee working full time is making below the national poverty level. You can lie about a lot of things but let's not be ridiculous. The average person who is held accountable at their job is getting damn tired of being treated poorly by some of the people in govt. offices and then paying that persons retirement. We are tired of unions protecting both the hard worker and the lazy person who doesn't do crap. I was a Teamster. I saw it firsthand. You KNOW it happens.
Gee whizzies, I feel so sorry for government workers. They can retire after 20 or 30 years, WITH FULL BENEFITS and I the poor slob who pays their wages and benefits has to work until I am 65 to get my retirement and paltry benefits. I pay 23% of my health care costs and state workers pay 9%. Is that fair? If they don't agree to pay more they are going to lose members because the jobs are going to be eliminated to cut costs.
@Gini76US excellent post. this is not an attack on unions but the amounts taxpayers have to pay to sustain union inflated benefits is not sustainable and it just needs to be more comparable to what the rest of us have to pay. if we dont reform the union public workers packages now then boatloads of jobs will be eliminated instead. so i suppose let's let the union workers decide if they wanna sacrifice their buddy to save their golden parachutes or not. plus obamacare doesnt help this at all.
@yzerman19wingnut maybe we ought to just let the sate governments go broke and then the state workers won't get paid at all and their benefits will be gone. Ya think that would wake them up!!
State workers are underpaid compared to nonpublic workers. Thats proven.
Second, you seem to be a freeloader and think that you magically are entitled to education and public roads and road maintenance, snow removal, police protection, fire protection etc without paying for it.
If you don't like big government Somalia is waiting for you!
@toyotabedzrock public worker pensions in ohio make up more than 12% of the budget. i've seen it. they get retirement after how many years of service? 20 or so? yea i won't be allowed to retire until im 70. so cry me a river. freeloader? nope. i only get to keep 46% of my earnings because the rest go to GOVERNMENT. so yea i pay more than my fair share of those things you mention. No somalia isn't for me. The USA invented small government until the socialists came to town.
@Gini76US Instead of asking "why should they get more than me?", you should be asking "why don't I get as much as them?". In other words, you should be saying "I should be getting as much as they do", instead of "they should be getting as little as I do". I think that's one of the problems that is plaguing this debate. People are asking the wrong questions. Not to mention blaming the wrong people. Shared sacrifice? Rich folks get tax breaks while the working and middle class get screwed.
Instead of the foul language or the protesting about what YOU are going to lose personally if SB5 passes why doesn't someone provide a viable solution for Ohio to get it's budget under control and become a competitive state again? The unions have forced wages and benefits higher and higher while the private sector cuts back. No solutions. It's not an attack on the worker. When jobs disappear (NCR, GM, DHL, etc.) to competitive states ie right to work states dont say where's the jobs?
History shows that Unions actually increase productivity of a factory.
GM is not in a right to work state. It's amazing how a new CEO is all they needed to make money.
Also the Union decided to agree to the cuts so what is the excuse?
Teachers their have a very low starting salary and it would be very limited because of this bill. It would cut their lifetime pay in half which means there would be economic contraction state wide.
These selfish, vile people could care less whether taxpaying families can feed their families; their concern is merely for their assumed "entitlement". I'd love to know how it came to be that teachers belive they're entitled to have taxpayers foot their retirement and health care when the taxpayer can't even afford it for himself.
@ziglet53 The only "selfish, vile people" are those trying to crush workers and make them bear the brunt of the economic problems caused by the greed and criminality of powerful corporations and financial institutions. Teachers and other public workers are taxpayers too. They're not depriving anyone else of decent wages and benefits. Your anger is misdirected, which is exactly how the rich and powerful like it.
Because they are college educated and worked hard to get a degree. And are entrusted with the teaching of children which are the greatest national asset we have.
What have you done for America recently? It sounds like you are attacking your neighbor because your work sucks. Maybe if you had a union you would have a decent job. Oh and btw just having a union in town raises everyones wages because of the increased buying power.
It's especially funny to see someone whining about "foul and uncouth" behavior by someone you've just called a "white trash piece of shit". Classist douchebag.
@missoulibertarian -- You have an education thanks to hard-working people like the teachers and school support staff in Wisconsin. Now their jobs are under threat. You might act a little uncouth too if someone threatened your livelihood. Get over yourself.
Yea! Go SB5 !!!! Schools, police & fire dept can't get levys and bonds passed because the public sees all the perks, inflated wages and pensions gov workers get coming out of their tax dollars. Why should they get alot more than the average Joe? Wake up people, unions are organized crime !!! If people are good employees, they don't have to worry about their job, HELLO!!! As it stands we can't hold bad teachers accountable. School boards need more control to run the school district .
Way to go teamsters tell the foxtards the truth and they go with the dumb founded look like Glenn Beck just removed the brain sucking straw out of their heads. The koch brothers trolls, they got screwed and don't even know. Take out your wallets and send more money to the tea party patriots, dumb shits. Oh and while your at it go to Google books and read real American History. Not that crap glen Beck makes up... the world of intelligent thought is at your fingertips, not on fake news.
Yes on five? And I see old people and blacks? Well guess what, if five passes, hey union members, we will be needing union workers in California. We are union friendly too!
"bad language"? what are you, 12? sounds to me like he told the guy what actually is true. before you all get all in my face with your oh-so-christian selves, i'm not saying all tea baggers are racist, demogogic assholes who wouldn't know their own self-interest from a paper bag. but many are. are you one of that crowd? if so, pppppppfffffttttt. shame on you, fellow worker. meh
@fabrimake amazing how the union members and non tea party proponents cannot express themselves without vile language, perhaps it is out of ignorance, could it be? Do you even know what a tea bagger is? (perhaps that was teachable moment from our President) Obviously not. Are you saying only the right has any faith based belief? Why can't you express yourself w/language that would be appropriate for the students to hear in their classroom.I hope this guy in the video is NOT teaching our youth
He is a teamster, not a teacher. This is a reflection of today's society (not the man, but the video). The extreme examples from both sides are the ones that attract all of the attention and become "representative" of all members of a given group. Don't think that the politicians aren't sitting back, watching this and chuckling with glee as we fight amongst ourselves. That means we aren't paying attention to them and what they are doing.
Must be nice to get a free education provided by your government so that you can be a better more enlightened and more productive citizen. If we destroy our teachers and first responders, you will get your wish of lower taxes but at what cost?
@lisaporter626 Maybe if the FBI were able to recoup the $25 MILLION in Cuyahoga cty alone, the residents wouldn't have to keep returning to the polls every year to vote DOWN the tax increase levy they want so bad! People are fed up! Unemployment high, property value Down, gas and food UP. The greedy SOB's need to learn a lesson. NO MORE TAXES! STOP the CORRUPTION!
I don't think the bad language is necessary from the guy in the video or from those who are responding to the video, it just shows how ignorant you really are. Grow up! Must be nice to be a teacher and get to call in sick or just not show up to work to go to a rally in Columbus, when the hard working people who are paying their wages are stuck at work because they have to pay taxes that pay the government workers.
President Howdy Doody Bush reigned for 8 years and ran the US economy into the ground and the world economy was dragged down with it. Howdy Doody Bush and Vice President Haliburton Cheney won't chip in to pay for the disaster they helped create, they only got richer, while the rest of us got poorer.
@brianlongshore You do realize that for at least 4 of those years the Democrats had control of the Senate and the House. If you remember your government classes at all, you know that the Pres. cannot do much without the "OK" from the House and Senate.
I am not a huge Bush fan, but it wasn't just him and the Repubs that got us here.

@DebrisBlog - I thought you people preached being civil and polite? So I guess you are able to treat human beings like crap on your shoe and that's completely acceptable. But we are supposed to be kind and understanding when you are expressing your view. Well, I will be kind to you. Because I will not lower myself to your level. God bless you. I hope you will take the time to research what the principles of the Tea Party are all about. America's future is at stake.
@ladyautumn41 I'm not sure who "you people" are supposed to be. I don't preach. I treat people with respect, as long as they do the same; when others treat people like crap, I'm not interested in hearing them whine about receiving like treatment.
The Tea Party's only "principle" is duping fools like you into shilling for the interests of the rich and powerful. I side with the workers and dispossessed. I think Jesus may have preached something along those lines too. Look it up.
What an idiot.

an insignificant or bothersome person.
Origin:
1920–25; perhaps orig. noun derivative of twit 1 , i.e., “one who twits others,” but altered in sense by association with expressive words with tw- ( twaddle, twat, twerp, etc.) and by rhyme with nitwit

@GriperNews no one is reaching into anyone's pocketbook and taking money. both wisconsin and ohio have said they will honor current contracts as required by law. this is about future contract negotiations. if something isnt settled with these bills soon then layoffs will be unavoidable. @counterfeitholiday the United States is a Full Presidential Republic that elects it's leaders through representative democracy. Look it up on wikipedia and quit arguing about it y'all. toyotabedzrock 1 year ago 5

@figmentzenguitar the people who have spent all the money are the democrats who were in power until January. Now the Democrats are mad they can't keep spending with the maxed out credit card. If you are a worker, union or not, you should all be mad like my Teamster friend because after they get done with the unions, they are coming after you.
unionmomx4 1 year ago 2
@unionmomx4
What do you suggest we do???
joshlbetts 1 year ago
@joshlbetts Good post. I agree that Obamacare has put a heavy burden on the states. It has to go if Ohio has any prayer of going forward without every employee of every type feeling the pain. Nonunion as well as Union workers of every type are getting pushed through the ringers. And yes some corporations get exemptions from Obamacare. I think that instead of acting like this guy in this video why don't we the people get together Union and non alike to repeal the job killing agendas?
yzerman19wingnut 1 year ago
@unionmomx4 the problem with going after the businesses as unions often do: who provides the jobs then? the businesses simply go somewhere else (ie GA that has right to work statutes). Ohio must become competitive. Blindly forcing higher wages and benefits only will in the end force businesses out. So instead of complaining about your own salary lets talk about how this can be sustainable in Ohio. It cannot. The budget deficit this year is over 8B. where should they cut it if not union?
yzerman19wingnut 1 year ago
@unionmomx4

"NO state employee working full time is making below the national poverty level."

AKASquared 1 year ago 4
Gee whizzies, I feel so sorry for government workers. They can retire after 20 or 30 years, WITH FULL BENEFITS and I the poor slob who pays their wages and benefits has to work until I am 65 to get my retirement and paltry benefits. I pay 23% of my health care costs and state workers pay 9%. Is that fair? If they don't agree to pay more they are going to lose members because the jobs are going to be eliminated to cut costs.
Gini76US 1 year ago
@Gini76US excellent post. this is not an attack on unions but the amounts taxpayers have to pay to sustain union inflated benefits is not sustainable and it just needs to be more comparable to what the rest of us have to pay. if we dont reform the union public workers packages now then boatloads of jobs will be eliminated instead. so i suppose let's let the union workers decide if they wanna sacrifice their buddy to save their golden parachutes or not. plus obamacare doesnt help this at all.
yzerman19wingnut 1 year ago
@yzerman19wingnut maybe we ought to just let the sate governments go broke and then the state workers won't get paid at all and their benefits will be gone. Ya think that would wake them up!!
Gini76US 1 year ago
@yzerman19wingnut
State workers are underpaid compared to nonpublic workers. Thats proven.
Second, you seem to be a freeloader and think that you magically are entitled to education and public roads and road maintenance, snow removal, police protection, fire protection etc without paying for it.
If you don't like big government Somalia is waiting for you!
toyotabedzrock 1 year ago 6
@toyotabedzrock public worker pensions in ohio make up more than 12% of the budget. i've seen it. they get retirement after how many years of service? 20 or so? yea i won't be allowed to retire until im 70. so cry me a river. freeloader? nope. i only get to keep 46% of my earnings because the rest go to GOVERNMENT. so yea i pay more than my fair share of those things you mention. No somalia isn't for me. The USA invented small government until the socialists came to town.
yzerman19wingnut 1 year ago
@yzerman19wingnut
They do not pay Social Security and hence get nothing back. So their pension has to be bigger.
Further their pension is only short on money because of wall-street.
This is a ploy to pit neighbor against neighbor. You work is earning you less because you have no union. Thats your fault not theirs.
You governor is selling your power plant in a secret no bid auction with this bill as well.
Did you know that?
toyotabedzrock 1 year ago 2
@toyotabedzrock Wow someone who actually understands what's happening...
FSUSW15009 1 year ago
@Gini76US Instead of asking "why should they get more than me?", you should be asking "why don't I get as much as them?". In other words, you should be saying "I should be getting as much as they do", instead of "they should be getting as little as I do". I think that's one of the problems that is plaguing this debate. People are asking the wrong questions. Not to mention blaming the wrong people. Shared sacrifice? Rich folks get tax breaks while the working and middle class get screwed.
FSUSW15009 1 year ago
Instead of the foul language or the protesting about what YOU are going to lose personally if SB5 passes why doesn't someone provide a viable solution for Ohio to get it's budget under control and become a competitive state again? The unions have forced wages and benefits higher and higher while the private sector cuts back. No solutions. It's not an attack on the worker. When jobs disappear (NCR, GM, DHL, etc.) to competitive states ie right to work states dont say where's the jobs?
danielsullivandba 1 year ago
@danielsullivandba
It would cut their lifetime pay in half which means there would be economic contraction state wide.
toyotabedzrock 1 year ago 2
These selfish, vile people could care less whether taxpaying families can feed their families; their concern is merely for their assumed "entitlement". I'd love to know how it came to be that teachers belive they're entitled to have taxpayers foot their retirement and health care when the taxpayer can't even afford it for himself.
ziglet53 1 year ago
@ziglet53 The only "selfish, vile people" are those trying to crush workers and make them bear the brunt of the economic problems caused by the greed and criminality of powerful corporations and financial institutions. Teachers and other public workers are taxpayers too. They're not depriving anyone else of decent wages and benefits. Your anger is misdirected, which is exactly how the rich and powerful like it.
DebrisBlog 1 year ago 2
@ziglet53
