i can only get my elbows to touch the wall, the rest of my arm no way, and i've been trying for 2 weeks now!! is it normal that the lower spine become super arched in this excercise? is there an easier/safer way to do this exercise?? thanks.

You got it. Hip Flexion helps prevent compensation through the low back. Sticking the legs out straight requires more core control.

Good idea... this position prevents over-arching the lower spine in an attempt to get the arms back, yes?
