The first car i ever had was a 79 mustang ghia, 200 inline 6. automatic. I also had an 85 gt. ive had other mustangs also. when i first got married i had a T-bird super coupe, and a 1972 Torino sport. now that i have kids its suv,s and gas saving family cars. But about 8 months ago i bought an 87 mustang lx. 2.3 . looks nice. its in my garage, im doing a little work on it should be ready to drive around this spring and summer.
you seem to know alot about this car, I have a 1979 2.3l non-turbo mustang as well (automatic) would the engine be able to handle me putting on a turbo if i found a used one?
sorry if thats adumb question, im more of a carpenter then mechanic haha
sure, but there's is an electronic retard on the distributor to keep the engine from pinging when the boost kicks in. and or course, you would also need the crossover pipe from the exhaust up to the turbo. I think stock it's 6psi, but if you want more boost, you may need water injection for the carburetor
well the 99 to 04 GT cars are pretty fun to drive. you can do a lot of mods to the cars really cheap. i like the current model and drove one a while back. i didn't drive it very fast but the ride felt much better then my car.
i came close to buying a 79 mustang with the NA 2.3. i knew it was slow but i had plans on doing an engine swap. well i never got the car cause i was low on cash and they wouldn't drop off the price any.
That's too bad, even with the turbo, this car is still no sports car. It's still fun to drive though, and off the line performance is good.
We were thinking of getting a later model turbo t-bird and doing a engine and tranny swap a few years ago. Just never got around to it I guess. I think the car is worth more stock anyways
well i found an 83 on ebay now that looks in better shape then the 79. it's a 2.3 with a carb and i was wondering if a turbo like the 79 has could bolt on to this engine. i know they made a turbo model in 83 but it was fuel injected.
Hmm, I thought all models were fuel injected in 84 and none in 83. Since it has a carb, the turbo like mine will work. The carburated 2.3's have a wet turbo, while the injected ones have dry turbos. Be sure you also get the retard module so your engine doesn't ping when the boost comes on. There's also a boost ajuster kit too, but then you need to put water injection in to stop the pinging. I think the stock turbo is at 6pounds of boost
well nevermind the price of that 83 went up to $810 at the moment which is a little more then i want to spend. maybe i'll check on the 79. i currently have a 2002 mustang gt maybe i'll just put money into it for now.
lol, since the car is all orignal from 79 it's not fast. Plus having all the smog stuff from the 70's, being carburated, and having a wet turbo (gas and air) doesn't help.
In 79 they were doing 0-55 times cause that was the speed limit. 0-55 takes 8.3sec for the turbo four. In 84, they added fuel injection and dry turbo that gave it like 70 more hp plus almost 30mpg. Later on they added hydro clutch and 5 speed manual.
I guess you could say ford made the first ricer we know today. lol
i have a black and green (neon green graphics) 79 Capri RS 5.0. this cars twin brother pretty much. lol 76k original miles.

Nice car! I had a 79 pace car with the turbo motor and 4 speed. Wasn't real fast, but was fun to drive. I can hear the turbo spool!
I want to find another 79 someday.

thanks, yeah it's really fun to drive. People try to race me at the lights, but I let them go and save myself the embarrassment. haha

You have an absolute gem there. Can you upload a shot of the turbo four engine itself?

I haven't driven the newest mustangs, but I like the styling on the 04's more. I really liked the Mach 1s they did for a little while too.

Yeah, what is it like, 99 through 04? Those are my favorite "newer" mustangs. I hate the new ones now. It's like, come up with some new ideas please
