Im trying to catch up on the series. When did Esther Rolle leave and how long was she gone? Also where was she supposed to be? I assume this was after James Sr.'s death?

@FrozenEMT She left during season five and came back for the sixth b/c after James died, she wanted J.J. to become a mature adult after he became "man of the house". The screenwriters and producers, disagreed with this idea, so she left. This was also John Amos's reason for leaving. So they wrote in the script that Florida moved to Arizona and married a guy named Carl.

To expand on this, John Amos left because he and Norman Lear couldn't reach a compromise on salary disputes and since he already gave in to Carrol O'Connor over the issue he wasn't going to the same thing with Mr. Amos. Esther Rolle left because of the J.J. issues (which there was ALWAYS problems with from day one!) but also because of the Carl Dixon character., who was an atheist and she felt Florida being a Christian would never fall for someone like that.

@dh1173 Also at the time John Amos was filming "Roots" and he felt that was more important to his career. I actually think this show got better after his departure. I never cared for the way he parented.

To the people who critizied Florida for leaving with Carl and leaving JJ, Thelma and Michael to raise themselves, Thelma and JJ were already grown adults, Thelma was 19 and JJ was 20. And Michael was 16, practically an adult, and was mature for his age, tending to study instead of watching TV,or playing around. They weren`t little kids. If Michael had been 6, that wouldn`t have been a good idea for Florida to leave him at that age.
