So brilliant! The lyrics only sound like Spanish....they actually mean noting at all!. For his first vocal representation on the screen, Chaplin composed and performed this exquisite "nonsense" song. Chaplin's "nonsense" is more beautiful than other people's genius.

it's not really french. It's a mixture of French, Italian and Chaplin. If you see the part where Goddard writes the lyrics on his cuff you see he's just making it up as he goes. "Greato porto bello" = "a very fat man" . Pure brilliance!!
