I think the term is galactic merger. Since the space between stars is so huge the process takes billions of years to complete itself and is far more harmless than it appears.

thank goodness when this happens . our solar system will be protected by my super powers. then all the women in the earth will gladly thank me for saving them. then it would be worth it. so dont worry about runnin around screaming "save yourself, save yourself!!!ARGHHHhhh!!!!"

no, they won't. this is an amazing video, but it's inaccurate. the galaxies would start to spin around each other, and eventually look like an "s" with a bulge in the middle. (barred spiral galaxy)

It won't be quite this bad--our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy aren't s massive as the ones shown here. It'll still be a disaster for anyone unfortunate enough to be in either galaxy, though.
