I had a neighbour in Burlington, Ontario who was a Northern Irishman. He was manning an anti aircraft gun in Malta when a bomb landed close by. He said that, when he woke up he was the only one left alive. I asked him why it was that he lived and he replied "I don't know, it just wasn't my time". His name was Jim Rooney and he died about 1990. That scene at the beginning where all the crew of the gun lay dead reminded me of him. He was a lovely man.
@MuzDupWog Yeah, I'm half Scottish and Mum's from Valletta. But you can take pride in the Italians who fought in the Seige. I'm not Catholic, but the Knights, and everyone who fought there were heroes.
my granda served on the hms penelope light cruiser wich was the last surface ship to leave during force k in malta it was also in malta were she got the nickname hms pepperpot theres is a book about the hms pepperpots exploits in malta
No this is not propaganda, It is all true. and much worse. As a Child living in Malta in the 50's and early 60's you could still see the the injuries suffered by the buildings that were cause by the bombing. Yeah it looks unreal but it is all fact.
Propoganda film? I am Maltese, have u ever read about our history? this movie is about the WWII siege on Malta but most of the action parts r taken from the real footage.
IN MALTA GEORGE CROSS, a military dictatorship was in place for years before the war by the British Imperialists. Freedom was not for the Maltese in British Malta. Plus, a widespread racist attitude by many British was the cause of a written rebuke by Governor Bonham-Carter to his own officers AND THEIR WIVES! Plus, war crimes and crimes against humanity were suffered by a group of Maltese nationalists courtesy of the British! Fighting for freedom and against racism? Don't think so.
That woman in the bus speaks like a Serbo-Croat; the Maltese don't speak with that accent. Then you get the Maltese passengers saying "Sahha" in a very British accent, when they could have brought in a few local extras. As for Muriel Pavlow's "Maltese accent" - well, she too sounds like a Serbo-Croat :)
Naraha hasra li wara l-kuragg li wrew missirijietna l-Maltin, kull ma hadna kien salib tal-fidda. Kien jisthoqqilna aktar minn hekk, forsi almenu parti mill-flus li l-Amerka tat lill-Ingilterra (fejn bi dritt kellna sehem), imma le ahna hadna salib. U b' unur u pompa kbira nitfawh fuq il-bandiera taghna. Success.
I remember seeing this film when it first came out - how proud of our island we were then!Judith
