Cyprus was under the Brits 1878-1960, the Turks 1570-1878 (longer then the U.S has been a nation), the Venetians from 1489-1570, the Crusaders from 1191-1489 and the Arabs from 643- 966 AD. Any history book will tell you that there was no Nation State called Greece before 1821, what you are referring to are Hellenic city States (which were constantly at war with each other) only unified under Alexander the Great from MACEDONIA and, there were many non-Hellenic city states in the same region as well. Even if we assume that what you are saying is true, the city states of ancient Greece were all still HELLENIC (GREEK), and together they constituted HELLAS (GREECE), resided by GREEKS (HELLENES), speaking GREEK (ELLINIKA).

One of them was Macedonia of Phillip and Alexander the Great, another one was Cyprus, as well Sparta, Athens, Thebes, Corinth, Argos etc.
