@TheGatunis No, it's not. Bob Marley & The Wailers were performing long before this even came out. This is just the first reggae song in discography. It's the first in print.
This tune is Rocksteady (1966), Reggae was a dance before it was a sound and Toots' is referring to the dance. There was no Reggae sound until 1968 (Skinhead Reggae in 1969 and Roots Reggae in 1972 and "Marley" in 1974)
First time I heard this was on the vinyl 3 lp Trojan story album ( still tucked carefully away !!)..and it's bloody fantastic, wanna dance not type !!!!

This is the 1st song in which the word reggae was used in a printed form. But the name wasnt invented by Toots, it obviously was lent from a dance which was popular at that time. As usual, this isnt the only explanation many people have many different opinions about it's origin. Some say that it originally came from the word "rege":
"rege", as in rege-rege, a word that can mean either "rags, ragged clothing" or "a quarrel, a row" (Wikipedia)
Streggae is a jamaican word for.. well, a loose woman or a hooker. And yes there also is a dance with this name which hints at ... the thing a man and a woman do sometimes each other and of course it looks alike. "Do the streggae" is a pun. ;-)
well , he invented the name for the music.Reggae is not invented but evolved from bleus/soul into rocksteady into ska into reggae into raggamuffin.......
No the first song of reggae from what I read was "Nanny Goat". But you never know, there was a gradual transition into reggae as Ska music slowed down.
ska reggae....this is reggae history, these are the origins of the reggae

ugly people were called straggay in jamaica
