Bob Geldoff was inspired to write the song after reading a report about Brenda Ann Spencer, a 16 year old girl who opened fire on kids at an elementary school in San Diego in 1979. Her explanation for her actions: "I don't like Mondays; this livens up the day."

@MrKayley10 Just found your question. It was based on a girl who sat in her bedroom window in San Diego across from a school and randomly shot at the school, multiple deaths, 8 wounded. On being asked why she did it by the cops, she said, "I don't like Monday's". :( back in 1975
