Im thinking of buying a broken one of these to refurbish. From what the seller says i think it's all down to bad contacts on the keys. Seems like it will be worth the effort!
@fender1000100 I don't blame you because it has that awesome early 90s vibe to it and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the same tool used to compose the score for shows like Saved By the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210
@jithendraVS If you care to open the case, check to see if any of the capacitors are swollen or (heaven forbid) leaking. It could be a diode going bad. Do the sounds distort when no filters are applied? If the raw sound is OK that might help narrow the problem down to one of the filter circuits. It could be amplifier. You might also start by checking the power supply. Also check to see if your mains voltage is steady. I suggest having it checked at an electronic repair shop.
@gridsleep Hi thanks a lot for the reply. I had just given it to the service person, he says filter IC is spoiled and that he can't get a replacement :(
@jithendraVS Oooooh, yeah, that's sad. :'^( Maybe Yamaha still has some replacement chips. Miracles do happen. You could post on all the synthesizer forums that you are looking to buy the filter board from any broken or otherwise useless SY85. Just getting the board would mean little shipping. You don't need a whole new SY85, just a filter IC. I bet you could get one for $50 or less.
Have you guys seen the Windows 7 equipped StudioBLADE keyboard production station? It can do the job of a whole studio worth of gear AND it runs all of your Windows compatable software and plug ins. Click the link below to see the videos on our channel
Nice demo!! i liked my old SY85 - which i bought new abt 15 years ago - so much i recently got it shipped over from UK to NZ where im currently living. I still use it in some of my recordings. A great bit of kit.
There's a demo of Michael Jackson's "Give in to me" for the SY85 which I have, as I remember it sounded amazing! I think it was an official demo for the synth. I'll upload if anyone wants. I'm going to dust off my dear old SY85 now!
My dad found one at a pawn shop for 100 bucks, now i wanna make like rap/pop with it but i wanna know if it's possible to record a sound or beat and then play it while working on other sounds, message me on here and help please! it seems like an awesome machine but i wanna know how to use it please and thanks
@maccagrabme I have read that the sequencer on the 99 has a higher capicity and there are more AWM samples in the 99. I cant confirm this. I only have the TG77
@maccagrabme The SY85 is a sample based synth only (as is the TG500) whereas the SY77 and 99 are both sample and FM based synths. They have a fully featured Advanced FM synth which can be combined with the samples and then filtered. The SY85/TG500 are essentially based on the same technology minus the FM part.
;-) Wonderfull demo isn't it? I also hear the theme of the animated series 'Pole Position' in there. I've seen someone putting his SY85 up for sale because he doesn't have the time to play it anymore. I'm definitely going to buy it now. ;-) 't would be a shame to let this beauty go to waste.
that guitar sound is really awesome what is the name of it?

Still have in the basement as a midi keyboard. I lost all the disks (they were all 3.5 Floppy, double-density) and the RAM card. :-(
