  • How can I have the isolate drums on my DVD ?

  • @SuperDreamtheaterfan Mike sells these as separate DVDs on his web site.

  • 5:06 - 5:49 brilliant!

  • First: Beyond this life, intro + a bit

Second: Beyond this life extended guitar solo for this tour

Third: Dance of eternity end of "instrumental" section (it's all instrumental, but it's the part where the instrumental part would be in a vocal song), part of Instrumedley for this tour

Fourth: Trial of tears guitar solo

Fifth: Pull me under (and mike can't really sing)

  • I believe The Offspring made a song about someone who should get a job.

  • Camera guy fucking sucks!

  • What's the first song he played here? Can anybody tell me !!

  • @JuanMGarcia11 Beyond This Life!

  • Can you make this same video, but with Pull Me Under only (full song)

  • O_O ?

  • Screw you haters!just listen, appreciate and enjoy...whats with all the whinning and comparing?afterall we all love dt,be it with portnoy or mangini..

  • 8:10 Mike Negro piñera Portnoy

  • thats why i started to play drums

  • motherfuckin' good sounding kit

  • The ending double bass for Beyond this Life shows you, that even gods like Portnoy, aren't perfect.

  • @Kayuja He screws up a few times on the bass. Is my english really that hard to understand!? I've lived in California all my life, smh.

  • @ShittyMcPoopyBalls Oh no, I understood you well, It's just that I don't find nothing that should be defined as "double bass ending" in Beyond this Life? :p and what he does at the end isn't that sloppy, is it?

  • @Kayuja He flams a couple of times, it's no biggie, but a small mistake is still a mistake.

  • How you get this?

  • El Negro Piñera

  • Very clever how we can isolate the frequency spectrum of the drums

  • @Dufflad08 It's not isolated from the song by frequency. They recorded the audio track from only his mic.

  • @rsyyjh4n6r7xtygb45bt Ah okay, sweet.

  • fantastic sounding kit, its stuff like this that makes me wish i could practice 43950345 times as much :L

  • His vocal harmony at the end sounds so weird without the melody. Lol

  • wooow!!! portnoy god

  • I just recently got into DT and i had heard of Portnoy at the drum events and thought ,,Hmmmm he is ok..but having watched him Motor thru "instrumedly" and other tracks I have found complete respect for him, his Drum parts are fucking amazing and suit the tracks %110 !he doesnt float like Lang or Donati ,, but fuck he playings music you can listen and hes adding great rhythms and thats what its all about...The Quandry- Be great soloist or being a great band n killin it! NO Brainer - Make music

  • haaaaaaaaaaaa Its great to hear the track isolated and every professional Player that has done it on a big scale knows sometimes u miss a little 8th here or a 15 there

    hahahahaha

  • LaBrie can suck portnoy's dick

  • 3:50...OOOOOoooops.Missed it!!!

  • a lot of lightworks, and many drums, does not mean you are the best, just very succesfull.

  • @Percussionfish The best depends on what aspects of drumming you're looking at. He's not the best in quick-drumming, for example. But technically, he's far the best (successful) drummer. Ofc there's better drummers out there, but Mike Portnoy played with DT, which meant success.

  • @NielsBrummerstedt Well, i agree with you. its just that Mike is a machine man, as technical as you say, excellent for what he plays, the guy is great drummer, composer and producer, honestly i think im a bit jealous (:P), but i bow before anyone who makes a decent living from music, but to me, he is too flashy, that's all.

    Peace.

  • @Percussionfish He's pretty creative when it comes to drum beats, especially odd time signatures. It's what makes him one of the best. I appreciate drummers for creativity and not for technical drumming skills.

  • 8:40 Best Part. Why o why Mikey you left the band

  • the 1

  • 5:20 is such a boss beat

  • can anyone do lesson for part 5:20-5:48 plss

  • @sirjakass I can write it down for you if you want? Its not that difficult because it's mainly just 32 notes or 16. Depents on how you count it. The only problem for me playing it is my lack of technique:P

  • @DrummerRF thx bro i appreciate that :D

  • OMG that drums sound so ORGASMICCCC!!

  • seco el wueon

  • Awesome drummer portnoy and nicko mcbrain are my Heros hopefully I will be that good someday

  • Thumbs up for the giant spit at 7:07.

  • @alldham people had to use umbrellas in the front row

  • this intro bit is stuck in my head !!!

  • Mike ......you have to go back where you belong.......DREAM THEATER!!!...4EVER!..xxx

  • unbelievable

  • aawwweeeesooomeee

  • Whats the crash to the left of the china on the right side of his kit? I need to know it sounds crazy

  • @Peartnoy518 i think it's called x-treme crash.

  • @Peartnoy518 its an HH 17" crash... i dont know what thickness

  • Dream theater are fags for saying he couldn't join back even though the band can do jack shit without him :L

  • @perfectdisasterband its not them who refused..its their lawyer

  • @perfectdisasterband I think the controllers of the band made that decision not the members themselves. I think they're all signed and have legal contracts/obligations etc.

  • @Sivels yeah that probally is true but now I reckon dt are going to go down hill fast, Mike was the heart and soul of the band :/

  • @perfectdisasterband yeah, I think that is very much true.. Who knows what will happen, we can just hope that he will come back somehow.

  • @Sivels I disagree with both of yous. I understand MP was a very big part of DT, but if they get a drummer as good as him they're set for the new DT era. Mike Mangini might be replacing Portnoy.

  • Pull them under Mike

  • Awesome!! I enjoyed this very much. All the best and thumbs up. G.

  • Mike.....you are......a MONSTER!!.....XXX

  • Hes so so so tight live :D

  • Beyond this Life <3

  • I feel sorry for the new drummer who has to learn all the DT catalog

  • @tmayne220 I bet he's just fine with learning Dt songs. After all he is the fastest and one of the #1 drummer's in the world.

  • @tmayne220 Who knows', maybe it's a big fan like all of us

  • @tmayne220 Dude, don't you know who Mike Mangini is? he's played really heavy stuff !!! Portnoy's work on DT is unique, amazing... but Mangini won't have any problems to play it as is

  • @tmayne220 I didn't see the date of your comment before doin' it... sorry :P

  • @tmayne220 Mangini is not a noob, I think he know how to play drum :)

  • @tmayne220 lol true, they should join each other again

  • @tmayne220 its mike mangini...he ll be ok... ;))

  • Reageren op deze video... I eel sorry for Mike now he realises that 'the new guy' can duplicate his drumparts with so much ease....

  • the best.

  • Killer ending

  • Thank goodness you can't hear the singer.

  • Beyond This Life!! :D

  • 7:43 like The dark eternal night

  • Prog Drumming is fuckin great to listen to on its own!

  • Pull me under, pull me under, pull me under, I am not afraid...

    FUCKING AMAZING VOCALS!!

  • Portnoy is a brilliant technical drummer, comparable perhaps to Peart. But what I always notice with him is that he goes from one incredibly complex figure to another, but that there's not a lot of rhythmic improvisation there, no groove. Though not technically as proficient, I think I prefer a guy like Stewart Copeland. He didn't do much dick swinging, and almost no solos, but he arguably improved his band more than any drummer.

  • Wow. I'm actually really impressed by this. Excellent playing and sound by Mike! He really is such a huge inspiration to the modern drum world! Props. Too bad he left.

  • 47: sounds like ticks and leeches :D

  • @TheGerthax well portnoy did mention tool as one of the influences for Metropolis

  • @atylerplai But both Metropolis pts. 1 and 2 were released before Lateralus, right?

  • thats what happens when god plays the drums

  • thats what happens when god plays the drumms

  • @cmandaro Huh? I didn't see Danny Carey in this video

  • Put Beethoven's 3rd Syphony in the background with this. Epicness ensues.

  • I think Mike Portnoy, Jason Becker, and Cliff Burton's ghost need to get together and make a band

  • whats this songs name ?

  • @lpstdr ı guess beyond this life from scene...

  • @lpstdr "beyond this life"

  • @lpstdr 0:00 Beyond this life, 2:24 still BtL but is only in live at the budokan, 4:00 is Instrumedley, 5:48 New Millennium and 7:42 is Pull me Under =D

  • Those drums sound like sex to me- if only I could get my drums sounding like that;-)

Mike Portnoy= fucking talented drum god.

  • Dream Theather is ganna suck without portnoy hes only a god

  • @iHaTeNoooBz I believe you're forgetting John Petrucci? :P

  • Pull me under.! mean Back ups.

  • Mike, el mejor baterista!!! Los otros hacen ruido!!!

  • he's a real genius behind his Kit :)

  • I still have jizz in my pants when i hear that fucking pro snare drum!!

  • And some people think the huge drum kit is just for show off.

  • I could be wrong...but this sounds like 'Beyond this life' am I right?

  • @Numlocq yeah, you're obviusly right.

  • fukin badass

  • How do you get your hands on the original of this?!

  • pure awesomeness!

  • I love this isolated drums idea. Especially when he starts singing.

  • @ 4:01, the song that they're performing is the Ytse Jam...It sounds very Avant Garde!

  • rumours say his mother is an octopous and his father a centipede...that explains his speed...

  • @vscourboutis is father "was" a centipede TT-TT

  • WHAT FUCKING SONG IS THIS U BASTASRDS

  • @evilbob1001 It's Beyond This Life.

  • @evilbob1001 some other guy said it was called "beyond this life"

  • @evilbob1001 It depends on what part you are talking about, this isn't all one song.

The first song is Beyond This Life, a few parts later I can make out The Dance of Eternity. It seems to switch around between songs, though.

  • no matter how long you've been listening dream theater they manage to continually amaze you.

  • Wow, allmost every note he plays is perfect. a good lesson!

  • @TheMapexDrummer11 no metallica doesnt sound the same i used to be a huge fan bought every album from them still fan but they sound way diferent then dream theater

  • took me about a min to recognize the song 0_0

    beyond this life :P

  • Best drummer ever!

  • i want his feet

  • BEYOND THIS LIFE :):):):):)

  • when i heard as i am, i had no idea he sung that high on the bridge part.

but now when i listen to the album versions of the song, i can hear him in the high pitch.

  • 1 of my favorite song :DDD love Scene from a Memory !

  • Everyone, that wants to know the songs names, thumbs up for my post 6 month ago (page 15).

  • I remember the reason now why I love dream theater. Mike is so amazing to watch on drums, and his set sounds and looks beautiful. Plus, the band itself makes the most amazing music, and have the most committed members I've ever seen live. This was in my doubt because lately, dream theater's sets have been getting short due to festivals and other crap. I sometimes wonder if they are becoming sell outs, but they're not, and I'm glad their not. Sorry for that long paragraph btw :P

  • @matrixman770

Thankfully, they're going back to "An Evening With" shows next tour :)

  • @Niekpas how do u know?

  • @matrixman770

He said that in a couple of interviews. Something along the lines of "We need to go out on our own for some time."

  • he is one of the best drummers of all time and every drummer should respect his talent

  • When does it get interesting?

  • @Movienevermade once it starts

  • @TheBuddyGreen

    Could have fooled me duder.

  • 0:44 I love it!

  • Man those cymbals said "We sound good!"

  • Do you realize how fucking fun it would be to be Mike Portnoy and play this kit?

  • 3 People misssed the like button.

  • putangina! NAPAKALUPIT!!! :D

  • the drum parts between 5:20 and 7:42 are so amazing a real real pleasure to listen at i love that man

  • its kind of funny

  • the best drummer i've ever seen

  • It sounds soo simple when just listing to drums, but when its all together is makes me want to cry, when attempting to play DT

  • this really makes you hear how great his kits sound is

  • Gaah omg, this guy has the creativity of fucking Davincci!

    God! he is amazing.

  • @TheBucket90 You are truly the king of overstatement. Making an analogy like that shows a true lack of understanding.

  • @hojima My point is, davincci was good at what he did, and so is Portnoy

  • what ever happened to the 4 minute solos i used to know and love? cant this guy do one that shorter than 8 minutes?

  • @feret1993 this isnt a drum solo, these r clips of songs meshed together, but with the drum track isolated

  • @gretschplaya...I hear ya, but no Overture in there....

  • This man is a walking metronome!

  • the people who always say he's not a good drummer then just show me one of your things you know ok i understand because no one of the those people never show something special trollers are just adult's with a mind of a CHILD there are a SHAME TO BE A LIVE

  • this is his best kit and his best sound!!!

  • @tolisdrums that's birch/bubinga for ya, man

  • @kewlguy323 that was b4 the b/b kit...thats his maple kit he used for train of thought and octavarium...and six degrees

  • @drummaboi375 THAT's maple!?!? Well, shudda figured.. Maple is generally louder than birch, but that just sounds so good...

  • How to change to other camera view on the dvd? Can't find any button for..

  • @Imsorry110 STUPID LARS OWNS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I LOVE YOU MAN YOU OWNS

  • 2:26-4ish....the middle solo breaks in Beyond This Life....5:50, middle section of New Millennium....also seen here

  • @willtolive That first part sounded like Overture 1928 IMO.

  • @gretschplaya beyond this life ;-)

  • @THEDrummerofTought Sorry guys, meant around 2:27. The little drum fill right there.

  • 2:26-4:03...is the solo breaks in the middle of Beyond this Life....5:50 is the middle of New Millennium.....

  • Can anyone tell me what song this is and what ablum it's from? Thanks for any help I get.

  • @paulwall1981
