Both angels and Seele wanted an instrumentality under their control.

Instrumentality in this case being the complete breakdown of individuality in favor of everyone becoming a single transcendent consciousness. However Ikari Gendo betrayed both (for his own ends) but was rejected by the Angel/Human Rei/Kaworu and instead Shinji was chosen. Shinji rejected the whole deal so now humanity is a multi-consciousness LCL soup.

The movie ultimately made no sense. If you think about it, from episodes 25 onwards, the Eva series was really just used as a cash cow. The producers got you REALLY hooked on the characters, then just lead you on a trail of crap; and you couldn't resist. You loved those characters. The producers could just crank out a total half-ass job and you'd still buy it...Because you loved the characters...Cool AMV BTW!
