Helium out of a balloon will NOT make your lungs burst, thats when its done DIRECTLY from a tank (the pressure is too high for the lungs and can perforate them.)

The danger from a balloon is that if you take too much in all at once -- like this kid really was doing -- it displaces Oxygen in your body and will suffocate you. Thats why he was about to pass out.
