Unfortunately Custer was in the wrong place @ the wrong time, he was a glory hunter, who got bored with his command after the civil war ended. If he was given better advice by the government, & the army i think the out come of the Indian situation could have been alot better.
each indian fights for himself, they know nothing of coordinated military tactics but everything came together at LBH such that even with their mob style of fighting they were able to win.
unable to admit that the indians could actually stand and fight a scapegoat was needed..reno was blamed by not charging the village...my feeling is reno would have been wiped out and then custer...custerfiles just refuse to accept that the 7 cav was hoplessly outnumbered and custer should have waited
the crows with custer said he saw reno repulsed and still did not move to support him..supposedely his move to attack the village at the end was his support..reno had no idea what he was doing

I see it a bit different.
The defenders of general custer ( a side I never thought of) payed tribut to the indians.
And they showed that both , number of indians and size of their village began to grow over the years .
There was no indian army totally outnumbering custers whole troop, no unorganizied fight by custer's group.
Custer was not a lonely hero against thousands, nor was he responsible for a massacre.
He was just betrayed by Reno and Benteen, and that for 3-4 hours, not 1 hour.

BTW: my comment does not show I might admire Custer.
In my eyes Custer got the right answer to that he has done.
But in this case Reno and Benteen are the ones to blame.
Custer was no hero, no fool, no criminal, no... he was nothing in that situation.
Nothing but kickassed by own troopleaders.
(and by the red indians who still had to fight hard against a well trained and much better armed troop)
