  • amazing art, timeless.....

  • love the music...

  • Youtube market nazis pooping all over people's fun once again.

GTFO OUT TO ISRAEL YOU BASTARDS!

  • try looking up how to re enable sound tracks there is a special way to do it.

I remember the golden days of the internet before everything had to be legally censored sigh

  • MESSGAE TO YOUTUBE.

    LEAVE THE FCKIN AUDIO ALONE.

I can watch Pink Floyd,Jackson, ANY FCKIN BODY WITH SOUND so stop removing soundtracks PLEASE, you friggin assholes.

  • second that

  • @imperialpod good point man!

  • das flugding gewinnt aber schnell an höhe

  • Yeah, the flugding has a fast engine. Look at the speed: 9000 km/h! And look how fast it accelerates.

  • I just started playing FFE and I still have loads of problems.

First of all I can't figure the hyperdrive. In the manual I read that a small red arrow will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen when the hyperdrive is ready to use. Still I never see any stupid arrow appearing! I am not near a space station or planet so I don't get the problem.

Second: Why do you have such a nice interface? Mine looks aweful...

  • First make sure you're actually high enough. The hyperspace drive won't work when you're near the surface of a planet. Second, and I think you missed this part, make sure you have a target selected on the starmap and that you have enough fuel to make the jump (available at tradestations). To select a target, use the F keys or the interface icons to get to the starmap screen. Place the crosshair on a nearby star system. Return to the cockpit and a hyperdrive icon will appear bottom left. Push it!

  • My interface looks so nice because I'm not playing the original version of FFE. There's a version available which enables 3D hardware effects, google for GLFFE. It's actually a modded version of the original. It's exactly the same except for the added glide support and a different interface skin. The good thing about this version is you can play FFE in a higher resolution.

  • Thanks for your help, I got the hyperdrive working and the graphics are way better now! Do you have any idea how to increase the solution?

  • Not sure about GLFFE, but FFED3D (which looks positively beautiful at times) has a config file in it with the resolution in it. Try editing that, if there is one in GLFFE.

  • This game was incredible, thanks for uploading

  • BRABEN MAKE ELITE 4 ALREADY :P make it realistic and much more complicated than old frontier elite games, please :(

    I love cosmos

  • I'm just about to graduate my batchelors degree, so will have some time on my hands, i'm not an expert at porting old applications (or any actually) but I'm going to commit to getting this working i think, anyone who can offer any assistance should chip in!! :0

  • by the way, I just got FFE working on Mac OS X 10.5.5 :D

It only runs in a small screen though, about the same size as above!!

  • That's good news, apart from the small screen. I hope you can get it to run in full screen eventually. Thanks for sharing.

  • I can't get the shift key to work which is a bit of a nightmare. I've been scanning through all the .cfg files but don't really know where the parameters are. Can anyone shed any light on this? this is the only real bug I've found so once fixed I could share this port :)

  • Did you ever get your shift key working? I'm having the same issue. Pretty limiting to the game!

  • unfortunately not, I found the key mappings in the .cfg also but it doesn't seem to effect the game if you change them :( this is confusing me though as I have ported some of my basic applications over from mac to pc also and key mappings tend not to differ that much.

A friend sat down for an hour pressing every button on my keyboard trying to find the 'shift' alternative but with no results :(

  • The best things were the background stories in the manual. It´s worth buying just for the stories.

  • Yeah, I remember the stories from the Elite Frontier manual. They were fun, it immediately set the right tone for the game, made you want to play it even more. I've never read the stories from the Frontier First Encounters manual, though.

  • very good choice on the music

  • God, I miss this game! Why don't they make a remake! OR better an new Elite!

  • theres rumors of Elite 4 but it is starting to seem like vaporware :(

  • do you guys like battlecruiser?

  • I like the old BC3000AD patched to the latest version. I find Smarts latest attempts a bit disappointing. I bought UC but don't plan on buying the sequels unless he makes space look more like space instead of 3D rooms with ugly wallpapers and makes planets look more like planets. But I give him credit for trying to make a good sim. His games are filled with good ideas but they are badly worked out IMO. I hope one day he'll get it right though. Right now I'd rather put my money on Infinity Quest.

  • Infinity Quest for Earth that is. I ran out of max allowed characters.

But don't get me wrong, Smart is actually entirely spot on with his ideas. I mean, you can load up tanks in a shuttle which you can then deploy on a planet. You can use a transporter, you can call in support and evac when you're stranded. Stuff like that is great. It's just that his games don't resemble space and that puts me off. I want space as in reality. Dark, huge & endless. With big planets you can land on in realtime!

  • Universal Combat is exactly like this except with much better graphics and more depth

  • ok i just dled but when it ain't working? does it work 4 vista?

  • i took one look at this and knew it would be awsum! where do i dl/buy this?

  • I remember I loved the missile effects on this game when you fired one and saw the smoke trail. Everytime you fired one though it hurt so much because of their cost!

  • LOL! Exactly!

  • Yes, I certainly loved MechAssault 1 & 2, so I know how it feels to not have another MechWarrior game. It puzzles me as to why MechAssault 1 wasn't made available as a playable game on the Xbox 360. Hopefully we'll see another game in the Mechwarrior franchise, and maybe we'll even get some space sims on next-gen consoles. I'll be happy enough to pick up Freelancer for the PC, until we see Elite IV released. I would play the Elite games, but they probably aren't compatible with Windows XP.

  • By the way, I know that Elite IV, just like Duke Nukem Forever, has seen development hell, but David Braben has said that he'll get to the game as soon as Frontier Developments (his developer) is finished with its upcoming game, The Outsider.

  • Thanks for the video, KingHaggis. The Blade Runner music really sets the tone for this video, and I loved that movie. This video game looks awesome, even for an old game! It's open-world gameplay seems very promising, and I hope that I can experience it when Elite IV comes out. David Braben and Ian Bell made an excellent team, but its sad that they split up. However, David Braben is a very good programmer, so I do think that he'll do fine with his upcoming games.

  • Thanks for your comments. I hope Braben won't give up on Elite 4 but fear we'll never see a sequel to FFE. I fear we won't be seeing any 3D spacegames for that matter (save for Infinity Quest for Earth). What happened to all PC sci-fi games lately? They're forcing us to buy consoles so we can play boring, linear, levelbased shooters and other crap. What happened to the free roaming PC space sims and PC games like Mechwarrior? It's frustrating waiting for the perfect game which will never come.

  • I agree totally. Everything is now shooters yet games like Elite though did have shooting in the game play was more than search and destroy.

I would pay good money for Elite to come out on the PC. Imagine what you could do with gigs of memory and speed what BBC Micro did with 32k and a few hertz.

  • David Braben has said that Elite IV development will be starting 'soon' for about the last 10 years or so, i'm afraid. Take it from an old iron-assed spacer who cut his teeth in the days when you had to fly a bog-standard cobra MKIII out of Lave to start a career; Elive IV is a pipe dream, a myth. You'll sooner discover the coordinates of Raxxla than ever have Elite IV see the light of day.

  • Check out Infinity: The Quest for Earth. Its the closest we'll ever see to an Elite 4.

  • you ever try a fling shot lol,try planting mines for minerals that never payed :) what about the time you took a contract against a panther and got him and yes had fuel to follow if he hypered lol,,the gravity on that planet didnt suck you down as he was chased,oh dear wicked game if you play once you manually fly near planets its brill, but you had to use autopilot in combat i got as far as being employed to use the green missle, craft coming out addios amigos, i flew through the pillars lol

  • Nice vid.

What is the music that comes on at about 9:00, is it also by Vangelis?

  • Thanks. The music that starts at 9:00 is "Stargazer" by Mark Knopfler.

  • I see... from "Local Hero", I knew I had heard it before :-)

  • Braben! I wait 4 Elite 4! Impatiently.

  • had an amiga version, david, anyways doing the mis hyper move after magic moments, were will i end up, i got the thing to scope fuel, magic game u need a find a version of t, disc lol,try find the amiga version, somethings happen lol.guess all escaped but i was number plating my craft, trying find my intials.we was out there wow, fantastic 1 before this listen

  • Ah, glFFE. Lovely!

  • Great. I really want to try this out, this is the game I was looking for. Is Elite 4 still in the making? Any other open-ended free-roaming games with the characteristics of this game?

    Love the Blade Runner soundtrack.

  • thanks a lot man I really appreciate your help, ill give these games a look.

  • Thanks for your comment. I know it's possible to walk around your ship with the games Parkan: The Imperial Chronicles and Parkan 2 but don't expect too much as it's quite useless. You can't really walk around with a purpose while the world around you continues. Don't know how to describe it any better. Believe me, those games are quite boring and walking around in your ship isn't half as nice as it sounds.

  • I beg to differ!! Try the game Sentient.

  • He wasn't talking about games in general.. he was talking about Parken 1 and 2. And I agree. The fps function in both those games is useless. And "sentient" isn't even a spacesim. It's just a weird rpg-like game in a spacestation... what's the fun in that.

  • nice man! by the way do you know any spaceship simulators where I can literally walk around my own ship and move about within the ship as I travel through space?

  • Also, those games have no realtime planetery landings. I would love to see some good ship walking too. I don't think Elite 4 will feature that but you never know.

You might want to take a look at Infinity: Quest for Earth (not released yet) and Tomorrow War (Russian only, English version maybe later). Infinity is scheduled for release somewhere in 2009/2010 and will surely rock!

  • You definitely can walk out of your spaceship and fly around it in a spacesuit in X series. 'X3: Reunion' has this feature, and I believe it's prequels too.

Has no planet landing, though. :(
