What do you do if you have a sloping field with thin, poor clay soil where almost nothing grows and which is rock hard every summer. Not even hawthorn trees will grow in it. So just how do you start to turn it into a rich, healthy and fertile piece of ground?
Smiling at the mention of "answer." Solution to all of the world's problems - a (forest) garden - as Geoff Lawton suggests? How I agree - wholeheartedly. Directly or indirectly! One only has to begin pondering this...
What exactly is he growing of use in this garden - is medicinal plants a euphemism for pot? . It doesnt seem very productive in terms of food output, having nice trees is one thing but where is the food coming from?
@hablerz i believe it is a much more dense low maintenance form of gardening. For example you would have large fruit/nut trees with bushes/edible plants growing underneath in a viable ecosystem.
as opposed to planting just fruit trees in an orchard and killing everything else underneath.
Check out the appendices in Martin's book 'Creating a Forest Garden' (using 'Look Inside' on Amazon). I was amazed how many trees and shrubs have edible parts that we normally don't bother to eat.
Thank u sooo much for sharing this with us...i started my forest garden in April 08 and the changes already are astounding. There is nothing more beneficial than planting your own food forest...your "space of love".
