J D was with the group, J D is the one who brought Richard Sterban in. J D at one time was suffering from a sore throat and Elvis asked J D if he new anyone that could take his place for a little while and J D got Richard Sterban, that is the story I heard one time in an interview of J D.
I remember that about JD, but i was not sure it was just a sore throat, nodules, cancer, whatever, but his voice did indeed change and started doing more recitations and not on the road as much. he also had bought the stamps and i think was still doing some concerts with the blackwood bros. and stamps in las vegas with elvis, but he was more singing in the special concerts and not on the road with the stamps all the time.
@dukebluedevil1able Also the workload was quite heavy at the Vegas Hilton. JD would stay up all night with 'the fellas" as Elvis called them and sing gospel songs. The schedule was gruelling, so JD hired some help. He was always helping young and upcoming singers giving them a break into the business.
@dukebluedevil1able When Elvis hired the Stamps as his back up group JD wasn't a regular, Richard was but Elvis told JD that he wanted JD to do what he always could do best, sliding the last note way-way down. Elvis always wished he was a bass singer and loved JD's ability to slide down deeper than most other bass singers could. SO JD began touring with the Stamps more when they backed Elvis, concerts with out Elvis featured Richard.
@ChubbyBeak Pretty sure this wasn't the original group that toured with Elvis at first. That would have been with JD Sumner who started the Stamps singing as the bass.
It don't get any better than this version of the Stamps. I know Donnie Sumner personally and I knew JD. I came very close to working with the Stamps when CJ Almgren left as pianist. I wish I would have taken the plunge.

Best quartet going at this point in time. Check out their album "Something Special" if you can find it.

I thought Aaron McCune was a lower bass than RS around the same age, perhaps i was wrong.
