I fondly remember Sally Bingham's debutante party aboard the Belle in the early '60s. My good friend Bob Quaife met his wife Judy when they were cast members of the Stephen Foster Story, who would do an abbreviated version aboard the Belle. Fond memories from the other side of the planet from Guam.
So that's what an honest-to-God paddle-steamer really looks (and sounds!) like. Very few paddle wheelers these days actually use steam engines any more, the vast majority being diesil facsimiles of the originals.
Simply amazing, like reliving the good ol' days when steamboats ruled the rivers!
wow, she still uses steam?! that's awesome! in Detroit we have the Detroit Princess, but they gave her a diesel engine, removed her paddle wheels, and even worse... they slapped neon lights on her!!!! D: can't really even call her a paddle steamer even more.
Actually, she's oldest commercial steamboat still operating in the US. There is one in England built in 1898 and others in Europe that may be older but they are much smaller.
The Belle is the oldest boat of her type, which is the Western Rivers Packett Boat. She is also the only steamboat of that type remaining. History is cool, isnt it?
LOL the boat horn pales in comparison to the mighty steam whistle of the Belle Of Lousiville

She might be old but she moved along quite well!
Love the old stern wheelers, and miss the old steam locomotives too!
