  • we,homo sapiens are amazing....

  • Better than battlefield 3-,-

  • Not joking better than pong cause it's more bouncy and fun and it's green and white.

  • i don`t understand this is now beyond out of date so how are the games of 2000 and onwards going to be outdated in a hundred years time are we going to have a chip in are brains that play the game through are eyes and the screen shows when we close are eyes. if anything i just what less bugs and glitches quieter consoles and longer game play if anything graphics are at there best now just check out uncharted 3

  • @Mountaind3ws lol

  • Needs some online multiplayer, some power-ups, maybe some high-score leaderboards...

lol no don't fricking change it at all 'cause the graphics are kickass

  • Crazy to see where games started and now games like Skyrim are out...

Man, imagine what it's gonna be like in another 50 years.

  • @ozboybrian if you consider how far weve come in 50 years. Personally, i think within our life time we will all be able to plug into a tro/matrix alternate reality and play games with people anywhere in the world.

  • @ozboybrian More like look at battlefield, the newest engine, incredible ._.

  • @ozboybrian The world ends in 15 seconds.. derp.

  • Noughts and crosses (OXO) was not an arcade style game. It simply duplicated what could be drawn on a leaf of paper. A totally static CRT display cannot be construed as an arcade video game.

  • Willy Higginbotham created the first arcade video game! Good job old bean! I don't care what Baer and Bushnell say! One does not have to patent and profit to be recognized as an innovator. Legality will never in the end trump veracity.

  • I wonder if this is compatible with my Happauge HD PVR, I want to make montages.

  • pause at 0:00 and press the left and down key at the same time.

  • thumps up for the guy who will create a hack for this

  • its called nim not tennis for two

  • @JuddeGaming No, nim is completely different.

  • this guy invent laziness!!

  • the first was space wars

  • @theatheistpreacher This game way before space war. This was 1958, Space War was 1961.

  • youtube! this works on any video, including this 1, play an arcade game on youtube!!!

pause, scroll back to 0:0 and go to your arowkeys, and hit up and left at the same time, and quickly move the arrow keys to move the snake, and get the white dots, if u get them all, ull be able to upload videos more than 15 minuits! unless u have copyrighted material, but its still fun! try it now!

  • God how i hate those tennis games come to think of it ANY tennis game. You wouldn't throw those controllers at the TV when you lost, now would ya? Could you imagine if the American government owned the rights to computer tennis. Pong would never had existed (bonus) HA! missile defense shield would be a really big bat in the sky...LOL

  • Now every single game ever made is a ripoff of Tennis for Two.

  • I bet Gordon Freeman played that

  • The first computer/Console game was made in 1941 by an American. But there is rumours the actual first electronic game was made in Nazi Germany by computer and electronic scientists. machine running the game was so big it took a whole floor on the house they where working on

  • the first normal video game was (rpg style) ultima in 1980.

  • Needs Moar BLAST PROCESSING!

  • So much wiring and machinery. Now we can have the whole internet, and tons of games on a device smaller than your hand.

  • The first video game was Pong

  • the first was OXO (its true) tenis for two was the second and pong is later

  • Dr.Higginbotham (LBP2) is a refferece to william... who created this game

  • Comment removed

  • this wasnt first...

The first game was Cathode ray tube Amusement Device

  • 4:28 (I'm doing a speech on the history of video games for a class, and I want to use a clip of this video in it. The time is the start marker for when I come back to load the video in class.)

  • 4:28 (I'm doing a speech on the history of video games for a class, and I want to use a clip of this video in it. The time is the start marker for when I come back to load the video in class.)

  • if this wasn't invented we should've had better stuff than the crappy hd 6990 core i7

  • actually, Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device came first

  • wait you can make a robot but not a lame 50's deformed video game

  • oxo

  • Tennis For Two was the second video game, The first was the Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device.

  • what will our children be playing next?? someone is gonna invent something new, might be you...

  • @GIRLANDLAKAIFORLIFE Let me guess.....WITH GUNS? YAY!

  • what!?!?.... no online?

  • A market for such a thing, this might have stayed a novelty of universities and academics.

Just like the Library of Alexandria burning down set us back hundreds of years, and we got along fine, the loss of Pong at the start would have meant the delay into the video game concept.

  • imagine if it was possible for old analog computers to have net....if they did...chances are it would be something like lit up "morse code" and such and thats how msg's would get across, that is if it was possible:P If it was im sure the net of a analog computer would be waaaaay limited compare to todays digital internet.

  • @girlstorm09

    It's called a modem.

Dial-up modems took digital signals, converted it to audio signals, then another modem at the end converted it back. The signal was a series of sqauwls, beeps, squeeks, bleeps, and static, amongst other signals beyond the range of human hearing. The data was compressed in that audio. That's how dial-up worked.

It was probably before your time, and it wasn't analog to begin with, but it worked on a similiar principal you are describing.

  • "3 man months" lol this guy watches too much star wars xD

  • wrong the first game was released in the 40´s its called Nim

    just search youtube:

    the game of Nim.

  • @Racersstorm Sorry but you are wrong. NIMROD was computer made to play NIM but did not use a video display. Thus not a VIDEO game. The first one that used a digital graphical display was 1952: OXO / Noughts and Crosses (Tic-Tac-Toe). Tennis for Two (the game in the video) came 6 years later, but it is much more advanced that tic-tac-toe :P

  • Fascinating little clip on a very important chapter in the evolution of video games

  • funfact: it's better than Halo and Call of Fuck-It: 19th Release of the same Fucking Game

    (oh-no-you-didn't)

  • I thought pong was the first videogame?

they even call its designer the father of videogames or something like that

  • @mememe84

Pong was the first COMMERCIAL video game.

  • what is this game called if it had a name

  • Brilliant mind. Too bad this man could not have made some real money from his gaming concept. Though it's true the equipment he used came with what seems a well laid out set of instructions. The real credit goes to the idea of converging these into an interactive game using controllers to manipulate response on a visual screen and with two players.

  • i would play this game all day O.o

  • InsaneAccorn send me here

  • this is so cool

i kinda like he invented this

  • this is so cool

  • Kinda funny with the for two things starting alot, electronic music was started with the song bicycle built for two, with a synth talking

  • Very interesting! Good thing there are imaginative and innovative people in the world. In his wildest dreams he probably never imagined what we now have, 50 years later.

  • Actually, a game called "OXO" was created in 1952, being the first ever video game.

It was simply an interactive game of Tic-Tac-Toe against the computer.

  • @georgef551 OXO isn't labeled the first invented game, though. Yes, it deserves a little love from the history, but it's not the true first game.

  • @ChrisJohnson2K

True, but Nintendo started in 1889, yet their first release isn't a true first video game (obviously).

Nintendo started the whole history, and OXO got video involved. If anything before OXO was made, I'd like to see that (and the gymnasium full of computers to run it).

  • @georgef551 Tennis for Two, right above you.

  • @Bittergamer1886

I wonder where Mario fits into all of this? :D

  • @georgef551 1981, Donkey Kong. Lol.

  • @Bittergamer1886

If a video game system was as big as these old giants are, with current technology, imagine what they could do?

  • @georgef551 Oh dear lord!

  • what engine this run on? I thinks its the source engine

  • This looks too new.

  • Omg, this looks better then Pong and this came before that? :O!

  • Willy Higinbotham, is the first Videogame Man ever! He is my Hero! :-) Very Great Man !

  • In 2030 The kids will laughing with PS3!

  • @eytyxios94 it's 2010 and I still don't laugh about this

  • @l1mewaxer --_--"

  • well in 1 way this is good he invented a game it went into all dose awesome games today in another way its bad coz people get lazy personally i love da guy coz da world wuldnt be da same if he didnt invent da game

  • so, i've noticed the videogames started by using devices which were not meant to be consoles. first game out there, "Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device" was played on a radar. second one, "OXO" (AKA "naughts and crosses") on a weird phone-pc-gizmo-thingy. third one: "Spacewar!" used to be played on a fridge-sized computer. and this one "tennis for 2" on an oscilloscope.

XD so, games are the result of brilliant people at work getting bored.

  • @killerkoliseo It's so fitting... videogames were born because people were bored out of their minds xD

  • the first videogame is OXO :-)

  • @pcna not at all, that came out in the 50's.

in 1947 there was the Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device patented by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. :)

  • this looks pretty awesome!

But the first game was OXO

  • this is cool :D

  • Talk about sexxi controllers!!

  • yes this was the first game

  • Nope. A computer game called "OXO" was created in 1952.

  • soooooooooo...... when's that coming to the PS3??? [=

  • @rokmc23 there's gonna be a remastered version for the 3DS =P

  • Its pongs daddy lol

  • Is a man-month different from a women month?

  • Better than pong!

  • i gotta write a paper on this topic. video really helped!

  • hey, me too! :)

  • me too!

  • @Doritoes10 me to this is my researc paper

  • it had even physics lol i tell you

  • Is there a video relating the days people did play the first time a game called "Hunt the Wumpus"? You had to take notes to be able to play with strategy this game that doesn't need graphics. I've seen many stories about Tennis (here), Pong, Space War, even OXO... but not really on Wumpus, except a mention.

  • This was the SECOND video game---the first was 1952, called "OXO", a tic-tac-toe game. Google it, or search on youtube for it.

  • ya i know this was the very first and the very realistic

  • I though Space Invaders was the first Video Game ever for a while, but then though: "Hey, this can't be it, the graphics is to damn good!". And this game may lack on GUI but it still has pretty good graphics! It reached it's 50th Anniversary in 1997, then now as of 2009 it's reached the age of 62.

  • And look were we are today!!!

  • this was the first game orr one of the first

  • it was the first video game ever actually. Soon after came the arcade machines

  • so ghetto haha

  • how the hell is this ghetto?

  • I thought the Tic-Tac-Toe thing in 1952 was the first ever graphic computer game!

  • OXO? Yeah i Think so

  • Wow! So this is where it all started! Imagine if this was never created,we would never have ps3s,wii,xbox(etc)Good thing that this was invented!William Higinbotham your so awesome!!!=D

  • This was the first video game .This is the first game, first tennis video game ever created.Atari was created till later. This game even has a controller, which basically is a video game.Oh and im only 15.=P

  • @merkno76

If you would've noticed this is not pong, and this is very important in video gaming, seeing as this is the foundation of programming for videogames.

  • @Merkno76

Man you shut the fuck up there would be no consoles and video games if this wasn't created.

  • @partydude9999 Not really. Because of how little communication there was on the subject video games came about almost independently a few times. Mostly tic-tac-toe or something like this. there was a tic tac toe game the definitely predated it.

  • @partydude9999 Someone else would have started it sooner or later, though.

  • @partydude9999 It's not just this. Be thankful for all the other classic systems like NES, Atari, Genesis, or you would never have Mario, Sonic, or even the whole industry for that matter.

  • @partydude9999

uh if it was never created we would still have all of that

    what are you talking about

  • @BrucieWayne

If Ford hadn't created the affordable car, we would have been set back years on that revolution. Without this game, we would have been set back on that, too. There is nothing saying we would have Mario or any other modern console today without this.

  • @Draknfyre

I don't think anyone was influenced from pong, sure there were other versions of pong for home entertainment however pong's technology was never used in the odyssey (by the way Pong is not the first video game ever for all of you who think that), and many other consoles could just manage without pong.

  • @BrucieWayne

Pong was the first commercial game. When they tested a prototype machine in a bar, the owner of the bar called them and said the machine broke. When they came to see what happened, the coin box was full, it couldn't accept any more quarters. I would say that influenced something.

The first home systems were ports of Pong. With it's popularity in bars, bowling allys, and pinball arcades at the time, it guaranteed it would be a home hit.

Without having Pong to show there was

  • @partydude9999 calm down, if he wouldn't have invited this some one else would have done it

  • @partydude9999 i know right? and some say video games were the inspiration of the computers we have today! So no video game=no computer.

  • lol from that to crysis, imagine another 50 years will be awesome.

  • Will we just leave reality behind entirely?

  • The way things are evolving, every year proves to out do the last one by scores and scores. 50 years is too hard to predict.

  • All I can say is,"THANK YOU WILLIAM HIGINBOTHAM!!!!Thank you for creating something that has led to occupying literally years of my life.I never knew that the inventor of video games was named Higinbotham.

  • Comment removed

  • better graphics than the flopbox 360 :P

  • finally a game that doesn't lag come to PAPA!

  • Probably worth a lot of money

  • but OXO was from 1952

  • wow 1st to 7th generations, we're gonno reach the 8th generation soon but we couldn't have done without the guys who invented all teh 1st gen video games in the 1900's

  • good physics for the first video game

  • looks awesome, and it makes a sound when you hit the ball like the real game, and the graphics are really good and smooth IMO. 5/5 for the first video game in history.

  • Imagine if this wasn't ever invented....We may not have "Halo 3" and Xbox 360's and stuff...Wow..

  • i think the freakier thing is imagine if the fukin gov't had gotten a hold of the patent thats the scarier one

  • I guess that would be 1 upside but we wouldnt have ps2 either :<

  • can I run this on my OSX,does anyone have the torrent?

  • wow the graphics are amazing! hahaha

  • Acually, not many know the first computer game ever created was a Tennis type game like this one only came in 1931 along with one of the first computers

  • It looks fun all you have is a thing to spin and a butten and BOOM your playing

  • Prettly much beats Pong as the first ever video game. Pong was the first video game for the public however.

  • wow I can create that game in the games factory ;P

  • actually, the first known video game was a chess program developed in 1950. - 1951. OXO did not appear until 1952

  • You're right, there was a checkers program made in 1951, but that was hardly qualified as a video game because it didn't use a video output... it was actually a real chess/checkers board with fixed lights underneath presenting moves made by the computer.

  • what abotu the missle simulator in the late 1940s

  • Sweet! It was in Brookhaven. Do you think this is what they named Silent Hill after?

  • Here's the deal. There is absolutely no known evidence of the missle game, other than a patent, which doesn't mean that it was actually made. OXO was the first known video game. Computer Space was the first coin-op video game. Pong was the first successful video game. Tennis for Two is in between OXO and Computer Space. The Odyssey comes years after Computer Space. End of story.

  • yea but wasn't OXO successful?

  • i would argue that OXO was a game but not a video game as it had graphics but no actual on screen game play motion or physics

  • There are a few more done on old mainframes, but didn't have any kind of display. The oldest might be "Core Wars." This was a game played by programmers when computer memory was on ferrite cores. Goes back to the earliest vacuum tube models. The object of Core Wars is to write a program to capture more memory for your program, while preventing your opponent from capturing any for his program. An xtra bonus is given if you can capture the memory your opponent is presently using to run his program

  • The first game was actually a tic tac toe game.

  • no it wasn't

  • but this game made in 1947

  • it was made in 1958 the first videogame was made in 1952 called noughts and crosses by A.S Douglas. it wwas tic tac toe but no one ever heard of it because the computer was so big it couldn't leave where he made it

  • well, for being that early it was really good graphics

  • this is the seconc video game, the first is OXO maid in the year 1952

  • But this video game was made in 1947

  • The first is not OXO, the first was made in 1947 by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr, an American, British did not invent video games im sorry lol

  • This guy beat nolan bushnell.

  • i think the first game ever was OXO not tennis for two

  • the guy who inventided this lives next to my friend

  • yea right oh and btw who was first atari or mr.game&watch?

  • shut up bellport is right next to brookhaven and u probaly think your the ppokemon master

  • sorry but still who was first mr.game&watch or atari?

  • idk i dont play video games this was in my ny ela state exam

  • that was to that other kid

  • Atari

  • ok nevermind just tell me who first atari or mr.game&watch?

  • Atari was created in 1972. Mr Game & Watch in 1980. Coincidentially, Mr Game & Watch was created the same year as the Game & Watch. What a weird coincidence.

  • the Voxa system came like 6 years before the first Atari...

  • Its called history, and without this, you wouldn't be playing video games today.
