Woocash, I know you probably never studied law. But the point is that politicians and diplomats from different countries/trade blocks have to agree trade deals with one another and remove national barriers to trade before the traders can enter the equation.

Bananas are an immensely valuable commodity. Ashton was an EU Trade Commissioner. One of her key tasks was to open the marketplace in bananas at a global level. Only someone with a limited understanding of world trade would ridicule this.

The main factor which distinguished the 'behind the Iron Curtain' countries was that their citizens were not free to travel elsewhere or to migrate to the West. Hundreds died trying to get from East to West Berlin. EU citizens enjoy freedom to travel or migrate whereever they want. That's the difference between a free society and a closed one.

Unless you were one of the privileged few, you could not leave the Communist bloc to travel to the United States, Western Europe, Canada, Asia and many other countries. Because, if you had, you would have read the European Court of Justice decision in Groener (which gives a judicial imprimatur to both cultural and linguistic diversity within the different countries and regions of the EU). It's a nonsense to talk in terms of the same values, views and religions. In France, for example, you can hunt wild game to your heart's content (in season). In the UK, hunting is banned.
