Saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon in early '70s. Don Cherry was playing pocket trumpet in the band. Absolutely awesome to a young American visitor to London. Remember running like hell in the crowd to catch the last tube of the night. Opening band was called Blurt.
Just saw A. Serkis' performance!!! inspiring stuff... "you're born alone and you die alone and in between you need to earn respect' (although that line is Winstone's). That movie spoke to me...
I've just watched the AmaZing performance that Andy Serkis did on The "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" Movie, it was FANTASTIC!

Aye, it's a strange fucking world these days. The odds of something this good hitting number one again are about a million to one.
Forget all this 'misunderstood cult hero' crap, they were HUGE at the time. I saw them in a totally jammed 2500 capacity hall, and they'd sold out the next night as well. This in a small midlands city. They nearly brought the roof down and there were people trying to get through the windows for the next night, including me...

@funkyleo1973 pop music happened mate its a fuckin travesty to music that all music has to be manufactured ,theres no independant genuis that was about when ian was about , i think all music production corps i.e sony , bmg and the likes should give all their artists an ultimatum to write their own music , n if they cant tell them to fuk right off !
@funkyleo1973 You made a perfect point... If I hear one more thing about Lady gag me with a spoon and Justin Bieber (no, Beaver), I'll scream!! Ian just put it out there the way it should be... Songs of that era were No. 1 material for sure-- shows you how much this world changed. By the way, love your name.
@bumblebeebattv I once saw an interview with Sting and he was commenting on the fact that at on point everyone in the country everyone knew who was No1 and now that has all changed. It's remarkable to think that some of the greatest bands of the past 30 years would not get deals now. To think that at one point we had stuff like the Police, XTC ect not only making great records but having big commercial success . It's fucking depressing.
@funkyleo1973 This is so true. Every time I hear one of these "superstars" sing, I want to puke and cry from the shock. Disgusting, really. Are people brainwashed or just fucking stupid?! And this world is moving forward?
@funkyleo1973 we live in a world where being commercial means more than having any sort of musical skill..music rely's on a cosmetic value and vanity now instead of the actual content which is just secondary now.but thats just me....shame tho innit
I first heard this on a crackly short-wave radio in the middle of the South African bushveld (near the Kruger National Park) in December 1978.
Thirty two years later I still marvel at Dury's genius, the band's sheer talent and one of rock's greatest basslines ever. Watt Roy's riffs are amongst the most iconic of the entire rock era... They define this band - which is timeless. What a pity Ian is no longer with us...
classic quote from Norman Watt-Roy, the bass player. When asked about the bass line from this song he said he thought he was getting paid by the note :p
The best British poet, the best bass player, and what a great sax solo!!!!!! what a Band. I don't think we have ever produced any Band or singer to best Ian and the Blockheads. They in my humble opinion changed the way we look and listen to British Rock music. No phoney American accent, and put over so well, Ian, you left your mark, and when all the other songs have passed and been forgotten, yours will be still be remembered, played, and enjoyed.
I used to listen to this whilst @ Mt.Druitt back in the early 80's .. still a F___King brilliant song
